Questions and Answers to LSU Coach Miles:

Q: Will App State be intimidated by playing in Tiger Stadium?

A: No. They play well year after year. I think Coach Jerry Moore's done a great job guiding that program. They're in in a position to play strong against anybody. They have a great football team. It's not specific to any division. They have a good football team.

Q: How eager are the players to get back to Tiger Stadium in front of their fans?

A: We're done playing against each other. We look forward to attacking an opponent's uniform and playing opposite an opponent instead of one of our guys. We enjoy being back in Tiger Stadium. It's a great tradition that we have here and our players, our coaches and I enjoy going into that stadium.

Q: Which quarterback will be the second off the bench?

A: We are practicing and prepare our team. If something were to happen between now and then, the other will be ready to play. We are preparing guys to play and they will know their role once we get closer.

Q: When will you announce the starter at quarterback?

A: The two veteran guys are the two the position for a length of time. Which one to name is not important right now. They will know closer and we are counting on a healthy week of practice. I don't think it's important to name a quarterback right now The team understands that we have three talented guys and all three will probably play.

Q: What freshmen are making an impact?

A: You will see a lot of freshmen play on special teams. This group of guys is very talented and very fast. I think they are very physical and will be able to run down the ball. You will see these guys play a lot. Ryan Baker, a linebacker, will play  a lot on special teams. Patrick Peterson will play at cornerback and there a number of others who will filter in and play.

Q: How did you find out about App State beating Michigan last season?

A: We wee in he office preparing for our next opponent and working the whole time and what's happening ends up coming down the hall. I didn't get to watch anything live. but I saw what happened when it was over. Michigan lined up to kick a field goal to win the game and it didn't work out that way.

Q: Is former Michigan player Tom Harmon (actor Mark Harmon's father and former sportscaster) remembered in Michigan like Billy Cannon is in Louisiana?

A: Absolutely. That name is synonymous with Michigan football. It's one where everything you spoke about is common knowledge to anybody who played or was a coach at Michigan.

Q: How important is a good performance by the offensive line will be to an inexperienced quarterback?

A: We need big play from those guys. We need leadership and for them to do the things that they had done all last season. We add (left tackle) Joe Barksdale to the mix. He's probably more ready to play than Carnell Stewart was at this time a year ago. I think our expectation is that our offensive line will play well. I think their expectation is the same.

Q: How much discipline will the defense have to have to play well against the spread offense?

A: They spread the field and create space and it's an issue with a team that throws the ball well. It's an issue with a team that can run the football as well as they do. It just requires to be disciplined. You have to know your responsibilities and know the call that's being made and play your responsible technique. I think our guys understand that. It's very similar to an option offense. It's similar to to a spread and throw it. They attack the width of the field as well as the vertical seams. It's a great challenge and I think our guys understand that they must play disciplined in this game.

SOME HITHER, OTHERS YON: Saints tight end Mark Campbell was among a group pf former and current NFL players swindled out of money in an investment they made through ta Swiss bank. The players are quarterbacks Drew Bledsoe, Kelly Holcomb, Rick Mirer, Craig Nall (LSU ex) and Campbell. The players have filed a lawsuit centered on an investment the players made in a company called Ply by Touch, which allowed consumers to buy products by putting their fingers on a sensor and having the cost automatically deducted from their checking accounts. The players say UBS should be held accountable for the money they lost because it concealed the criminal past of John Rogers, the founder of Pay by Touch....The new lineup for "Dancing With the Stars" nearly lost one of its most interesting contestants a few hours before the cast was announced. Reggie Bush's  galfriend Kim Kardashian of reality TV fame, gashed her left foot in a hotel room accident. Despite the injury, she will be able to compete on the show, which starts in three weeks. Others joining the list of new recruits for the show include former NFL defensive tackle Warren Sapp, 2008 Beijing Olympics beach volleyball gold medal winner Misty May-Treanor and Maurice Green, a two-time Olympic gold medal winning sprinter.Former NFL running back Emmitt Smith won the contest and NFL stars Jerry Rice and Jason Taylor have fared well in the competition. Dolphins boss Bill Parcells showed his genius by trading Taylor to the Redskins Big Tuna foretold Taylor knee injury, knowing that too many cha-chas had weakened Taylor's knee...

LSU officials are urging fans to begin hydrating early if they plan to attend the game in Tiger Stadium. where the university is taking unprecedented steps to try to avoid heat-related problems. An LSU team doctor said fans should begin drinking plenty of water and other hydrating beverages at least two days before the game....LSU offensive guard Herman Johnson has been named to the SI.com preseason All-America team...App State is 12-0 when playing on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU...Give SI.com credit for not bothering for the college football season to begin before declaring which teams will be playing in what bowls. They put Ohio State against Georgia in the BCS title game in Miami. They have Florida vs. Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl...A Japanese synchronized swimmer fainted during her Olympics performance and had to be helped from the pool. But don't worry -- the rest of the team quickly pretended to faint, too.  My time is up. Ed Staton can be reached at edcoachstaton@yahoo.com.
