US House Passes Obama And Democrat Stimulus Bill

Written by: BayouBuzz Staff

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday evening passed the $819 billion economic stimulus package based upon party lines.  During the week, President Obama attempted to obtain support from the Republicans, however, he received no GOP House votes.  Twelve Democrats voted against the legislation.

The Senate is likely to take up the bill next week.

After the vote, Obama said in a statement, "I hope that we can continue to strengthen this plan before it gets to my desk.  We must move swiftly and boldly to put Americans back to work, and that is exactly what this plan begins to do."

Republicans complained that the bill does not create jobs and are wasteful.  Various Republicans have described the plan as a “wish list” of long-time Democratic “wants”.  They have labeled the plan as “liberal”.

House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, who opposed the legislation said the bill has “some good provisions” but disagreed upon the methodology how to heal the economy.

The bill passed on the day that Starbucks declared that based upon a quarterly net profit dropping of 69% it plans to shut down 300 more coffee shops translating in 7000 jobs lost

The Democratic-controlled House defeated a Republican amendment which would have reduced spending and expanded tax cuts

Earlier during the day, Obama addressed the nation giving his reasons for the legislation:

A few moments ago, I met with some of America’s leading business executives. It was a sober meeting – because these companies, and the workers they employ, are going through times more trying than any we have seen in a long, long while. Just the other day, seven of our largest corporations announced they were making major job cuts. Some of the business leaders in this room have had to do the same. And yet, even as we discussed the seriousness of this challenge, we left our meeting confident that we can still turn our economy around.

But we must each do our share. Part of what led our economy to this perilous moment was a sense of irresponsibility that prevailed from Wall Street to Washington. That’s why I called for a new era of responsibility in my Inaugural Address last week – an era where each of us chips in so that we can climb our way out of this crisis – executives and factory floor workers, educators and engineers, health care professionals and elected officials.

As we discussed in our meeting a few minutes ago, corporate America will have to accept its own responsibilities to its workers and to the American public. But these executives also understand that without wise leadership in Washington, even the best-run businesses cannot do as well as they might. They understand that what makes an idea sound is not whether it’s Democratic or Republican, but whether it makes good economic sense for their workers and companies. And they understand that when it comes to rebuilding our economy, we don’t have a moment to spare.

The businesses that are shedding jobs to stay afloat – they cannot afford inaction or delay. The workers who are returning home to tell their husbands and wives and children that they no longer have a job, and all those who live in fear that theirs will be the next job cut – they need help now. They are looking to Washington for action – bold and swift. And that is why I hope to sign an American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan into law in the next few weeks.

Most of the money we’re investing as part of this plan will get out the door immediately and go directly to job-creation, generating or saving three to four million new jobs. And the vast majority of these jobs will be created in the private sector – because, as these CEOs well know, business, not government, is the engine of growth in this country. But even as this plan puts Americans back to work today, it will also make those critical investments in alternative energy and safer roads, better health care and modern schools that will lay the foundation for long-term growth and prosperity. And it will invest in broadband and emerging technologies, like the ones imagined and introduced to the world by people like Sam Palmisano and so many of the CEOs here today – because that is how America will retain and regain its competitive edge in the 21st century.

I know that some are skeptical about the size and scale of this recovery plan. I understand that skepticism, which is why this recovery plan will include unprecedented measures that will allow the American people to hold my Administration accountable. Instead of just throwing money at our problems, we’ll try something new in Washington – we’ll invest in what works. Instead of politicians doling out money behind a veil of secrecy, decisions about where we invest will be made public, and informed by independent experts whenever possible.

And we will launch a sweeping effort to root out waste, inefficiency, and unnecessary spending in our government, and every American will be able to see how and where we spend taxpayer dollars by going to a new website called recovery.gov. Because I firmly believe with Justice Brandeis that sunlight is the best disinfectant, and I know that restoring transparency is not only the surest way to achieve results, but also to earn back that trust in government without which we cannot deliver the changes the American people sent us here to make.

In the end, the answer to our economic troubles rests less in my hands, or in the hands of our legislators, than it does with America’s workers and the businesses that employ them. They are the ones whose efforts and ideas will determine our economic destiny, just as they always have. For in the end, it’s businesses – large and small – that generate the jobs, provide the salaries, and serve as the foundation on which the American people’s lives and dreams depend. All we can do, those of us in Washington, is help create a favorable climate in which workers can prosper, businesses can thrive, and our economy can grow. And that is exactly what the recovery plan I’ve proposed is intended to do. Thank you.

Liberals, the problem to every solution.......

In de earlfield we used to joke about there being nothing more dangerous than "an engineer with an idea" - I now dread a "politician with a solution" to one problem or another. The really <fouled> up thing is that these politicians usually have caused the problem they claim to have the solution to.

What does Bush, or the Congressional approval of Halliburton/Bechtel construction programs have to do with what is going on right now 'Writtenby'? Get over it... Congress was in on this up to their ears as well......

What Democrats do not seen to get is that taking money from working families who struggle (Mom is working too now) to allow others to be irresponsible and live on the government dole is neither caring nor in the best interests of either group.

hard work and self reliance are virtues indeed but Republicans seem to be unable to "get it" that caring is a virtue, too, and that means more than just empathizing with the other guy about big evil guv'mint is ripping everyone off.

I heard someone joke that the "change" Obama will bring about is... "change" is all you'll have left after he gets through taxing your wages.

The REAL LOSS in unnecessary government spending is that this takes the DECISION of where this money is spent from the U.S. citizen (the consumer) and places it in the hands of bureaucrats. My apologies for my previous claims that I'm agnostic or that God doesn't exist; for after reading all the billions and billions and billions (sounds like Carl Sagan, no?) that will be spend on things WE THE PEOPLE would not WILLINGLY spend the fruits of OUR LABOR on, I am getting religion. President Obama CAN STILL bring about change that is so badly needed in our governance; or he can show himself to be a two-faced liar. The choice is his.

900 billion to be spent, with 10% going to real infrastructure. billions to ACORN (which relies on poverty and dependence to survive), hundreds of millions on STD programs, which are just wasteful cronyism, -- Of course, Obama and no politician can make any progress instantly. But these democrats can apparently make 900 billion tax dollars disappear virtually instantly. Doing nothing IS probably better than wasting $900 million tax dollars, enriching cronies, buying votes, creating sham programs to funnel money into organizations and individuals with (barely) hidden agendas. If they do nothing on this stimulus plan, we still have the same problems to solve, but we would not have squandered $900 billion and resources might be available to come up with real solutions that aren't political payoffs, and pet projects.

WB says, "that Obama's change will suddenly turn out educated children from these pitiful schools?? "....Nah-- President Obama can't "suddenly" do anything- and neither can Congress-- This economic package is an "educated risk." (dont' rip my words apart-- I'm as skeptical as the next person)... I'm sure "the plan" will be fine-tuned before it's finally approveded...Do you suggest we do nothing? I want input from both sides-- Many seem to believe that Nancy Pelosi is the problem. (buncha babies in Congress)... so here we go again.

Kajunlady, Obama should veto the bill if it's going to give Vitter more money to stimulate his manhood don't you think?

So what if 90 billion is for infrastructure. Out of $900 billion???? 10% of the money going to concrete and steel, and 90% going to social causes, liberal cronies, and government waste?? I can't believe how quickly Obama showed his democrat roots. Just like his cabinet picks proved, he's an electable celebrity figurehead, but all of the actions are old-time democratic party populism and vote-buying. At least we can see that CHANGE is not what will happen in this administration.-- The blatantly liberal Advocate in BR is praising the plan for the money that will come to the failing schools. They have been attacking Pastorek and the state for taking over about 2/3 of the failed schools in the parish. I guess this school facility money (which will be squandered on crony contractors) is supposed to make us think that the takeover is no longer necessary and that Obama's change will suddenly turn out educated children from these pitiful schools?? Give me a break.

Correct me if I'm wrong, kp-- but, doesn't Obama's stimulus package specify some 90 billion dollars for infastructure-- and millions of new jobs and job-training?

Unless Barak Obama vetos the pork from this bill, it will be no joke that his deeds do not match his avowed principles. I haven't lost all hope (and respect) for the man.... yet.

As always the Devil is in the details. I would gladly stand with our President if this bill had only infrastructure projects to provide temporary jobs and create better infrastructure - both of which would aid our economy. Instead it is a "wish list" for the Democrats. I wish I could say that if the taxpayers hold the Democrats accountable in 2010 & 2012 things would get better, but I honestly cannot say having the GOP in power is all that good either. It does appear that having the GOP in power could be cheaper, but then again, what did they do late last year? Wasting 350 billion dollars does not earn my confidence as their being fiscally responsible. This is going to be the greatest fleecing of the taxpayer in history. Our only hope is Mr. Obama's veto pen. Don't hold your breath waiying on that though.

"Democrats may have eliminated provisions on birth control and sod for the National Mall in the "job stimulus" -- but buried on page 147 of the bill is stimulation for prevention of sexually transmitted diseases! In the past, the CDC has used STD education funding for programs that many Members of Congress find objectionable and arguably unrelated to a mission of economic stimulus [such as funding events called 'Booty Call' and 'Great Sex' put on by an organization that received $698,000 in government funds". No earmarks he said!

Melancon voted for it...because Pelosi said he had to. Heath Shuler another Blue Dog democrat voted against it. At least he had the conviction to vote the way a fiscally conservative would vote, unlike the lieing Melancon.
