Shaken up over her recent 45-day jail sentence, Paris Hilton hired hotshot attorney Richard Hutton, and after a long meeting to discuss how they plan to minimize her jail sentence, it looks as if the pow-wow paid off. According to a Sheriff’s Department spokesman, Hilton is now expected to serve three weeks or less behind bars because of state law allowing for early release for good behavior. However… my question is this -- isn’t she supposed to display good behavior before any decisions of an early release are made?
Supposedly, due to the overcrowding in jails, the state of California allows inmates who pose a lower-level security risk to get time off for good behavior.Meanwhile, Hilton’s pals continue to stand behind the heiress. “Hills” villain and PR Svengali Spencer Pratt has joined the Free Paris bandwagon with a “Free Paris” MySpace page.
“I’ve always thought that the punishment should fit the crime. Paris has changed her image dramatically over the last couple of years,” said Pratt. “Now she is such a good role model and smart businesswoman. So it’s a shame that a miscommunication between her and her people is landing her in jail. She should get probation with community service, but no way should she be pit in jail with real criminals.”
Just for the record, many of the “criminals” stuck in jail are there for the same reason as Hilton- driving under a suspended license after getting slammed with a DUI.Now don’t get me wrong, if I were sentenced to jail time, I’d be kicking and screaming, too. However, as I’ve said before, it could be worse. When it comes to drinking and driving, there’s a thin line between good upstanding citizen and criminal and a crossover can happen in an instant.
Crossing states is Girls Gone Wild founder Joe Francis after he completes his 35-day sentence in Florida for contempt of court. A federal judge ruled that he should than be sent to Reno to face tax evasion charges.
Facing a pretrial hearing for a DUI charge on June 8 is Nicole Richie, which resulted in her driving the wrong way on Los Angeles’ Ventura Freeway.
Voting the wrong way, in my opinion, were American Idol fans who let LaKisha Jones go on Wednesday night. Although her choice in songs this week weren't the best fit for her, she’s still a damn good singer! In a follow-up interview with Ryan Seacrest, Jones said she “just could not get it together with the song selection this week.”
Finally, hitting theatres this weekend is Gary Marshall’s Georgia Rule. Starring Lindsey Lohan as a rebellious teen who is forced by her off-beat mom (played by Felicity Huffman) to spend the summer with her granny (played by Jane Fonda), this is the story of three women who travel down a road where family secrets are revealed and inner growth awaits them.
If you prefer the horror flicks to those sometimes sappy coming of age stories, 28 Days Later is also a newbie making its debut in theatres. Seven months after the outbreak of a deadly virus that turned people into creepy creatures, they continue to dominate the countryside as the few victims who remain try and put an end to… well… the end.
Andthose of you who are in the mood to laugh should check out The Ex, which centers around a screw-up (played by ZachBraff) who is forced to work for his father-in-law after his wife (played by Amanda Peet) gets pregnant and has to step down as the family breadwinner.
Whatever you decide to do this weekend, I hope you have fun! Until tomorrow, that's a wrap in today's edition of Hollywood Buzz.
Paris Hilton (and her mother too) actually has the audacity to whine and say she doesn’t deserve such a severe punishment. She’s getting exactly what anyone else would get for disobeying a court order not to drive. Ignorance is never an excuse when you are caught breaking the law. Ordered not to drive for however many days it was; stemming from an original drunk and reckless driving conviction. Also ordered at that time to attend an “Alcohol Safety Class” by a certain time and given 3 years probation. She got off easy the first time.
Basically she is saying “Screw You” and keeps driving without a license. (Remember, ignorance is never an excuse when you are caught breaking the law.) Paris gets caught 2 times driving on a suspended license (still does not go to jail) and is contemptuous by never completing or signing up for an Alcohol Class. She cannot claim she wasn’t aware of this last particular duty she had to fulfill.
Here in Alaska, first DUI is 90 days suspension of your license, 3 consecutive days in jail no matter what or who you are (eventually, you know trials and such). Getting caught driving on a suspended license is 10 days in jail regardless of whether you are aware of the suspension or not (20 days with 10 suspended). Getting caught again especially so soon, is 20 days with even more driving time suspensions. Contempt of court (from the ignoring the Alcohol Class) is anywhere from 5 to 20 days. That adds up to 45 days.
Claiming, “I don’t deserve this” makes me want to puke. That’s exactly what the rest of would get. The only nice thing Paris will be getting is not having to co-habitate with the general population. She broke the law! She endangered other citizens by driving drunk. Flipped her nose at the law (because she’s better than everyone else on the planet) by not following the court orders, probably thinking Daddy would take care of it.
LA County jail, Yeah baby!
