NEW ORLEANS MUSICIANS and BUILDING ARTISANS IN INTERVIEW AND PERFORMANCE
Nick Spitzer, University of New Orleans folklorist and creator of the syndicated radio program American Routes, will host a free public event at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 18, at Sound Café, located at 2700 Chartres Street in New Orleans. Spitzer will interview several renowned area musicians who are also building artisans or influenced in their families by the trades. They will then join for an impromptu performance covering New Orleans traditional jazz through R & B, funk and later sounds.
Produced by the Center for Black Music Research of Columbia College Chicago in collaboration with Sound Café, the event will highlight the important contributions these performers have made to the musical cultures of New Orleans and beyond. The participants will include Don Vappie, the banjo player and guitarist who has played a major role in the revival of the banjo in New Orleans traditional jazz and who is featured in the noted PBS film American Creole; the R&B and soul pianist Eddie Bo, who is also a finish carpenter from a multiple-generation family of Algiers Point Creole craftsmen; trumpeter and singer Lionel Ferbos who, at 96, is the oldest active musician in the City of New Orleans and who until age 75 worked as a tinsmith; Alonzo Bowen, a native of the Creole 7th ward who plays both traditional jazz and R&B clarinet and saxophone, and rebuilt his house post Katrina; and the legendary Creole plasterer Earl Barthé, a sixth-generation New Orleans artisan who views music as an influence in his work. Barthé was recipient of a 2005 National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Host Nick Spitzer noted “Too often New Orleans is seen as just a party town, and while we do love to play great music here and have a good time, it’s also a place of enduring hard work and high end craftsmanship. This is especially so in the building trades. Whenever you can show the connection that building artisans have to the jazz community over time, it informs and lifts our spirits as we strive to rebuild the cultural community and economy.”
The event, which is supported in part by the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Community Partnership Grant program, is a component of a Center for Black Music Research conference on the black music diaspora that is being hosted by the Music Department of Xavier University on Saturday, April 19. For registration and program information about the conference, visit www.colum.edu/cbmr.

APAS will set up food booths that will sell food and ethnic drinks at increments of $1.00 per item. Water and soft drinks will be available at the festival, which will be sold exclusively by ANI.
APAS Celebrates the New Year Across Asia
Although you won't hear the Auld Lang Syne, you'll catch melodic Asian sounds, colorful traditional dance numbers and spicy authentic food at the Asian Pacific American Society's annual Asian Heritage Festival at the Audubon Zoo.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 19, the festival will feature Asian New Year celebrations with special performances representing the traditions of China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and more.
To kick things off with a bang, the Vietnamese American Young Leaders Association of New Orleans will usher in the start of the festival with an adrenaline-pumped lion dance performance.
Other cultural highlights include a Tari Indang Dance, an Indonesian dance from Bali. Traditionally, the Tari Indang Dance is that of greeting, welcoming the audience and inviting the spirits to enjoy the performance. Attendees will also be treated to a Taiko drum performance and Aikijutsu, an 800-year old Japanese martial art form used by samurai, plus much more.
Children will have the opportunity to learn simple Chinese with St. Andrew's Episcopal School, who will sing a Chinese version of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" and teach Chinese words that describe different faces.
Children and adults can learn more about different Asian countries and even learn how to write their name with Chinese characters at various cultural educational tents scattered throughout the festival grounds. Raffle prizes will be awarded throughout the day.
The cultural ambiance will be complete with Indonesian, Khmer, Filipino, Thai and Vietnamese cuisine.
APAS Asian Heritage Festival is sponsored in part by the Jazz and Heritage Foundation. Admission to the festival is included with Zoo entry fee. For more information, visit www.apasneworleans.com or call (504) 831-1148.

A native to New Orleans, Madeline Collara has been a master jeweler for over 30 years. Her experience in the lapidary field ranges from jewelry repair & stone setting to silver & goldsmithing. She began her career as an apprentice, learning from masters such as H. Alvin Sharpe, the father of the Mardi Gras Doubloon.
She became a successful entrepreneur by working "behind the scenes" doing most of the custom design & repair work for local jewelry stores in the Greater New Orleans Area. Meanwhile she sharpened her jewelry making & stone setting skills by receiving formal education and training from institutions such as the University of New Orleans, Trenton School for Jewelers and New Approach School for Jewelers.
As her passion for creative expression through jewelry design began to grow, she ventured out and presented her work to the public. For 15 years she traveled showcasing & retailing her designs at various Gem & Lapidary Expos around the country.
After years of experience as a jeweler, her path led her to become an instructor of jewelry repair for 5 consecutive years at William Holland School for Lapidary Arts and 2 years at Wild Acres Retreat.
At present, she is operating J&M Jewelry (formerly St. Bernard Jewelry) with her husband Joseph Collara. Despite the lingering effects of the hurricane on St. Bernard Parish, many devoted customers and friends frequent her storefront seeking custom design work & jewelry repair by someone with superior artistic skills and talent.

Picnic for Pitot Preservation!
NEW ORLEANS, LA - Imagine sipping wine and enjoying a picnic while helping preserve one of New Orleans’ singular historic sites. That is exactly the plan for the first Pitot House Crepuscule* Concert hosted by notable preservationists including artist Mario Villa, architect Grover Mouton, jewelry designer Mignon Faget, and event co-chairpersons Pamela Pipes, Claire Layrisson, and Thea Pagel, among others.
The sunset picnic and concert will be held on the lawn of the Pitot House, 1440 Moss Street beside historic Bayou St. John on Sunday, April 20
Old fashioned and vegetarian picnic suppers by Savvy Gourmet may be ordered in advance. A limited selection of picnic suppers will be available for purchase on site and the cash bar is sponsored by Cork & Bottle.
The event features the music of composer-vocalist Topsy Chapman and Preservation Hall’s Hot Four. Also on the program Ben Jaffe, son of Preservation Hall founders Allan and Sandra Jaffe, will speak on Preservation Hall’s role in perpetuating and preserving the unique musical style that is New Orleans jazz. As well, musician-author Tom Sancton will share intimate views from his memoir, Song for My Fathers: A New Orleans Story in Black and White. The Pitot House benefit concert will be carried live in an internet broadcast on WWOZ (90.7 FM) www.wwoz.org.
Artist Tony Green has created an oil painting valued at over $5,000 exclusively for this event. It is one of the many desirable items available in a silent auction. Also on offer: a framed etching by Mario Villa; and four nights for four wine lovers at the charming Swanson Winery guest cottage in Napa Valley. A detailed list of auction items is available at
All proceeds benefit the Louisiana Landmark Society’s Pitot House Museum and Garden, the only colonial-era country house on Bayou St. John open to the public. Bayou St. John was significant as part of the historic Mississippi River trade route. The Louisiana Landmarks Society's mission is to influence the community about the value of preserving neighborhoods, historic sites and landmarks, as evidenced by its stewardship of Pitot House.
“Shooting Star” $125, includes reserved parking and seating, and Swanson Wines. “Twinkler” $35, includes seating on the lawn (blankets encouraged but no coolers, please). All tickets include a future private docent-led tour of the Pitot House. Shir Chadash Conservative Congregation, serving the Greater New Orleans area, will host an innovative musical Congregational Second Seder on the second night of Passover, Sunday, April 20, 2008.
Following on the heels of the synagogue's popular "ShabbatRox" musical Friday night service, the synagogue will feature Jewish musicians from the New Orleans area accompanying popular songs from the Passover Seder. Selections will include "Mah Nishtanah," "Dayenu", "Avadim Hayinu", "Betzeit Yisrael," and other Seder favorites.
"It's very exciting to be including New Orleans musicians who are popular in their own right joining forces for this 'All-Star Passover,'" said Will Samuels, who is producing the musical portion of the event. "By having the Festival of Passover begin between the weekends of French Quarter Festival and Jazz Fest, this gives us the perfect chance to observe our biblical
Festival with a New Orleans twist."
Local musicians participating in the Seder include *Ben Schenk*, clarinet (Panorama Jazz Band); *Rene Coman*, bass (The Iguanas); *Marc Stone*, guitar (Marc Stone Band and Betty Harris); *Joe Krown*, piano (Joe Krown Organ Combo); *Dave Sobel*, drums (The New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars); and *Ben Jaffe*, sousaphone (Preservation Hall Jazz Band). The lineup is scheduled to change.
The seder begins at 6pm, preceded by the *Ma'ariv* (evening) service for the Second Night of Passover. Shirley Bateman will cater the traditional Passover dinner.
The community is invited to the seder, although space is limited. The cost is $21 per person; $10 ages 5-13, and free for children ages 4 and under.
The event is free for unaffiliated Jewish newcomers to the New Orleans area who are registered with the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans' Newcomers program. Reservations can be made with a check to Shir Chadash, 3737 West Esplanade Ave, Metairie LA 70002 or by calling (504) 889-1144.

This Week on American Routes: Herbie Hancock & The Neville Brothers
Fire and Water: Herbie Hancock & the Neville Brothers
Jazz pianist Herbie Hancock joins us to talk about keeping his hardcore jazz credentials while breaking the pop barrier with "Watermelon Man." Hancock recalls famous associations with Miles and more, including those on his recent Record of the Year, River: the Joni Letters, a collection of Joni Mitchell tunes. Plus the four faces of New Orleans' Mount Rushmore--Art, Aaron, Charles and Cyril--the Neville Brothers. Since 1954, when Brother Art hit with the ultimate carnival classic "Mardi Gras Mambo," the Nevilles have been on the scene, solo or as a group. We'll hear their legacy of soul, funk and R & B as the brothers tell us how it all came to pass, and how the legacy lives on in the next generation with Ivan and Ian Neville.

The Louisiana State Museum (LSM) will host yet another world-class exhibition this summer in the Old U.S. Mint in New Orleans’ French Quarter: Treasures of Napoléon.
Treasures of Napoléon offers visitors an amazing opportunity to see beyond the myth of Napoléon Bonaparte and gain an understanding of this complex figure as a man. The exhibition includes over 250 extraordinary artifacts that trace this seminal historic figure’s life including: the earliest known letter in his hand; the valise that brought him the signed Louisiana Purchase documents from America; the sword that proclaimed him Emperor in the Coronation Ceremony at Notre Dame; his camp bed from the Battle of Wagram; his personal map of the French Empire (1812); the clothes he wore soon before his death; and in his own hand, the first will he wrote during his final, lonely exile on the desolate island of St. Helena. Perhaps the signature artifact in the exhibition is one of his legendary hats which Napoléon wore during the battle at Essling in 1809. Wearing the brim aligned to his shoulders to distinguish himself from the other officers on the battlefield, Napoleon wore these now iconic hats as he strode across the European continent and into the pages of history.
The exhibition also contains paintings, sketches and sculpture by the greatest artists of the time including: Gros, David, Canova, Gerard, Isabey, Houdon, Percier, Fontaine, Delaroche, Chaudet, Vernet, Mauzaisse, and more. Silver, porcelain, textiles, furniture and jewelry on display come from the finest manufacturers of 1st Empire France. Among the many featured decorative art pieces is the dramatic 12-foot high Imperial bed of the Emperor’s brother Jérôme Bonaparte, King of Westphalia.
Treasures of Napoléon is on view through – August 3, 2008. Admission is $6 for adults/$5 for students, seniors, and active military. Children under 12 and Museum members admitted free.

"AN UNFORTUNATE INCIDENT": MURDER CREEK Flows from A TEMPLE OF TREES Presented by author Joe Formichella, with Suzanne Hudson
Tuesday, April 22, 2008 - 7:00 PM
East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon Ave., Metairie, LA
Free and open to the public; no registration required
"AN UNFORTUNATE INCIDENT East Bank Regional Library on Tuesday, April 22, 7:00PM, as author Joe Formichella discusses his non-fiction account of a violent, unsolved crime committed in Brewton, Alabama, in 1966 at the center of his latest work of non-fiction, MURDER CREEK: THE UNFORTUNATE INCIDENT" OF ANNIE JEAN BARNES (River City Publishing). Appearing with Formichella will be novelist Suzanne Hudson, who wrote the introduction to the book and whose novel IN A TEMPLE OF TREES fictionalized, to some extent, the events leading to the 1966 death of the Brewton, Alabama, resident. As Joe accompanied Suzanne on her 2003 book tour, it became apparent that what truth about Annie Jean Barnes' mysterious demise could be uncovered had to be sought and reported, in spite of those who would prefer to keep the very mention of the "unfortunate incident" buried.
A question-and-answer session and book signing will follow. Books will be available for purchase at the event, made possible by and benefiting Friends of Jefferson Public Library, facilitated by Octavia Books of New Orleans. Books for purchase are provided as a
convenience; no purchase necessary.
This program is free and open to the public, and registration is not required.

Celebrating Jazz Month and Jazz Fest 2008...
THE ART OF JAZZ
A Traveling Exhibit of the Louisiana State Museum Exhibit Showcases Artistic Impressions of Jazz
From the moment jazz burst onto the international cultural scene around 1920, visual artists were inspired by the exuberance, power, and emotion of this uniquely American music form.
A traveling exhibition by the Louisiana State Museum illustrates the many ways jazz has been interpreted by artists over the past century.
Entitled THE ART OF JAZZ, the exhibition will be on view at East Bank Regional Library from April 15 to May 15, 2008, in the Main Hall during library hours.
Comprised of over 40 colorful photographic reproductions from the State Museum's
extensive jazz collection and other sources, THE ART OF JAZZ features portraits, paintings, posters, and photographs arranged in six thematic sections. Images in the first section, "Impressions of Jazz," illustrate how artists sought to depict the feelings the music aroused
in them. Tuesday, April 22, 2008
