I hope your week was as exciting as mine was. I spend the most beautiful Sunday afternoon at the Domingo Latino (Latin Sunday) at the CityParkBotanical Garden. The afternoon was magical surrounded by friends and the hot sounds of Julio and Cesar and Rumba Buena.

In ninety-seven dazzling color photographs, Lockwood brilliantly documents the Atchafalaya's timeless beauty. He shows amazingly diverse and abundant wildlife, rookeries with thousands of egrets and herons, waters with billions of crawfish, and ridges with deer, squirrel and woodcock.
At nearly 1.4 million acres, the AtchafalayaBasin in south central Louisiana comprises America's largest swamp wilderness, five times more productive than the Florida Everglades.

As part of Jazz Awareness Month, on Saturday, October 20 at 2:00 pm, the French Market will present Tim Laughlin in a tribute to Pete Fountain. Peter Dewey Fountain, Jr. says, “Jazz has a sound that would never be written in stone, which would always be brand new because it is pure personal? Over the years, Pete has kept New Orleans Jazz alive in his own club in New Orleans and later on the GulfCoast. Pete Fountain has always been considered an ambassador of New Orleans Jazz as he performs his music on guest appearances on network television and specials.
Pete Fountain plans to attend the tribute but will not be playing. With the beginning of the twenty-first century comes a core of musicians with fresh and imaginative ideas for this timeless American art form known as “jazz.” This is especially true in New Orleans and clarinetist Tim Laughlin is indeed one of these musicians. Tim Laughlin was born and raised in New Orleans, a city constantly re-inventing itself. His style and sound are uniquely his own, contrasting the classic style he grew up listening to and the contemporary influences of many and in particular Pete Fountain. The schedule for this week is as follow: Sat., Oct. 20 Tim Laughlin in a Tribute to Pete Fountain 2-4 pm at Dumaine & Decatur Streets, and Sun. Oct. 21 Lars Edegran 2-4 pm at Dumaine and Decatur Streets

To properly impact crime in our neighborhood, it is vital you join our Neighborhood Watch program. Please plan to attend this introductory meeting conducted by the N.O.P.D. If there is sufficient interest, future meetings can be scheduled on: Rape Prevention, Identity Theft, Armed Robbery Prevention, Setting Up Video Surveillance……Topic might change on a given night. See more at http://fsjna.org
Be Concerned, Be Careful, but most of all, Be Involved
Neighborhood Watch is a citizen's involvement program where citizens, in cooperation with the New Orleans Police Department, directly participate in the detection and prevention of crime in their neighborhood. Citizens involved in Neighborhood Watch are trained how to recognize suspicious or criminal activities and how to report these activities to the N.O.P.D. Neighborhood Watch Groups are trained by District Crime Prevention Officers focusing on particular crime problems in their neighborhood.
Neighborhood Watch works because people want to assume a more active role in making their community a safer place to live. Residents within a neighborhood are aware of who belongs there and who doesn't and what activity is suspicious. The most important reason Neighborhood Watch works is that citizens began working with, instead of relying on, law enforcement to combat crime in their community. You can do something about crime in your neighborhood by becoming involved in NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH.

WHAT: Global Green Panel Series: Keeping Green Building Affordable
WHEN: October 17, 5:30-8:00 pm
WHO:
Will Bradshaw, Green Coast Enterprises
Kathy LaBorde, Gulf Coast Housing Partnership
Michael Lopez, Global Green USA
WHERE: The Global Green Resource Center, 841 Carondelet Street, NOLA 70131
WHY:
Introducing better building practices has its benefits, but it also has its costs. Many of the features suggested for green building and green design come with a cost to them that turn off the average builder and designer. This has spawned many creative programs that offer tax incentives and rebates to help alleviate this cost. Join us this month as we discuss these methods and find ways to keep the green building industry affordable.
For more information, email jmoore@globalgreen.org, call 504-525-2121, or visit the ResourceCenter on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday from 10:00am to 3:00pm.

Love at the Lounge: Laughter from the Heart
Four Humours is pleased to present its first production of work by a New Orleans playwright, Brian Sands, in a double bill of seriocomic one-acts, L@L: Love at the Lounge. L@L includes "Eat Pudding," wherein amorous single vultures in ancient Egypt test the limits of what they'll swallow for love, and "All Night Service," wherein two Quarter rats, back from wandering the world, struggle in the wee hours to just find a place where they can crash together.

DramaRama regular Sands has been a member of the Dramatists Guild for over twenty years and the Literary Manager of Southern Rep since 2004. We're honored to give two of his witty and insightful scripts a full run.
The cast includes Lisa Davis, Andrew de la Pena, Molly Maginnis, and Chris Schlumbrecht.

VavaVoom October 18, 2007 Southern Music
VAVAVOOM! Think speed, energy, a hot chick, maybe a burlesque queen in a smoky bar on her night off. But what style of music? The short answer is a synthesis of New Orleans jazz and the French Gypsy tradition of Django Reinhardt, as well as what Jelly Roll Morton called, "the Spanish tinge." But that's only part of the story. The fact that guitarists Raphaël Bas and Pierre Pichon have been playing together since high school in Bourges, France speaks of their authenticity, and from their renditions of the classic tunes Swing 42 and Nuages, it is clear that they know their Django. But since emigrating to the United States independently of each other over a decade ago, they have played many styles, including blues, funk, reggae, and other types of jazz. Bas once backed former Big Brother and the Holding Company guitarist Sam Andrew, and Pichon toured with the popular Austin swing band, The Asylum Street Spankers. These influences ar e there in the music, too-particularly in the intricately interwoven guitar parts they play, whether backing each other or other band members, rather than following the more traditional approach of just playing block chords behind the soloist.
