I hope you enjoyed 2008 Halloween weekend that included the very special Krewe of Boo parade, the opening of the Prospect 1 art installations and all the other fun events that occurred blessed by Mother Nature’s glorious weather.

 

I enjoyed so much riding in the Krewe of Boo parade. The crowds were spectacular, beyond all our expectations and the party afterwards was a lot of fun.

 

I am looking forward to this week when I will be getting up very early so I can be at my polling place in the Marigny at 5:30 a.m. as a poll commissioner. So I expect all of you to exercise your voting right and vote. Expect long lines since 80 % of the registered voters will be voting in this very historical election.

 

On Wednesday, November 5 experience an evening of cultural indulgences at the JW Marriott Lobby Lounge from 5:30 to 8 p.m., featuring works by local artist Marina Reed- Original Watercolor Paintings. Special Appearance by the New Orleans Fire Fighters. The calendar "New Orleans Fire Fighters Look Hot" (available for sale) will raise funds to support the purchase of a mobile command van for the NOFD. Some of the firemen will be on hand to autograph the calendars!! www.hotnolafirefighters.com . Live Entertainment by Riccardo Crespo,(Brazil-born  musician, singer and songwriter, who plays acoustic guitar and harmonica) Wine Tasting and complimentary Hors D’oeuvres.

 

On November 5, The Tipitina's Foundation, LAE Productions, and the Recording Academy (Memphis Chapter), invite you to an unforgettable evening: the world premiere of a concert documentary film "Fats Domino: Walkin' Back to New Orleans", nationwide broadcast on PBS stations beginning in November. And the re-presentation of the Fats Domino Grammy Hall of Fame Awards by they Recording Academy, Memphis Chapter. Presentation begins at 6:30 PM at Tipitina's Uptown (501 Napoleon). Featuring reception, open bar and live entertainment. $75

 

This week at the Southern Food and Beverage Museum (SOFAB) in the Riverwalk  is full of activities.  Last night I attended the informative lecture by Dale DeGroff, America's best known mixologist and author of the new book: "The Essential Cocktail.” which he graciously presented to me as a gift from him and his wife Jill.

 

On Wednesday, November 5,“Food and Beverage as Identity in New Orleans”-Panel Discussion presented by One Book One New Orleans from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at the Tasting Room, Southern Food and Beverage Museum. Panelists, including Ralph Brennan, Jim Monaghan of Molly's at the Market (one of the two bars that stayed open during Katrina), and Sara Roahen, former Gambit food writer and author of Gumbo Tales: Finding My Place at the New Orleans Table, discuss the prominent role of food and beverage in the identity of residents of Greater New Orleans; presented in partnership with the Southern Food & Beverage Museum.504-569-0405 for more information

 

On Saturday, November 8 "A Question of Good Taste: The Perception of Flavor"

with Sharon Vercellotti- presentation, discussion, tasting at 2p.m. at the Tasting Room, Southern Food and Beverage Museum. Sharon Vercellotti is president of V-LABS, INC.  V-LABS is a consulting, analytical, and manufacturing laboratory, specializing in carbohydrates and polysaccharides, and serves research scientists in academia and in the food, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and cosmetic industries.   As a chemist she has extensive experience in applying instrumental analysis to food products.  Free with museum admission and free for members

 

Wednesday, November 5 is Tropicana Night at the Cricket Club (Old Red Room) 2040 St Charles Avenue, there will be Tropicana Nights with Javier Gutierrez and his group  VIVAZ Plus ZAZA & friends for happy hour ( Havano Cigars will be available) Doors open at 7 PM till.................. There is nothing like hot Latin Music and Jazz to spend a lovely evening.

Check out the special events happening this week at Garden District Book Shop, 2727 Prytania Street. New Orleans Goes To the Movies Booksigning & Discussion of “A COMPLETE GUIDE FOR THE MOVIE BUFF”  Wednesday November 5, 5:30-7:30 PM. A complete guide for the movie buff. Twenty classics filmed in and around New Orleans are discussed with the effect the city had on the film and vice versa. Examples are Streetcar Named Desire, King Creole, Saratoga Trunk and the Big Easy. The book includes a walking tour of the French Quarter and a St. Charles Ave. streetcar ride to see film locations and other important sites for the moviegoer. Pen and ink sketches illustrate throughout.

George Rodrigue Booksigning of ‘BLUE DOG SPEAKS - Saturday November 8, 12:00-2:00 PM.When Cajun artist George Rodrigue began his series of  Dog paintings in 1984, he had no idea that they would consume the greater part of his life for over two decades, and that the mysterious Blue Dog-inspired by his studio dog-turned-model, Tiffany, and the Cajun loup-garou folk legend-would become a wildly popular international icon as well.

 

Blue Dog Speaks is the first book to prominently emphasize Rodrigue's painting titles, one of the most important elements in the creation of a Blue Dog painting, alongside the works. Rodrigue uses Blue Dog painting titles to provide insight-whether humorous or nostalgic or sad-into the human condition.

THE CYSTIC FIBROSIS FOUNDATION’S WINE AND ROSES Arabian Nights will be on November 7. The Louisiana Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis presents its 5th Wine and roses –Arabian Night fundraiser at the Uptowner,428 Henry Clay at Laurel. VIP Party 7-8, Party 8-11p.m. Some of the city’s finest chefs including Bob Iacovone of Cuveé, Tenney Flynn of GW Fins, Donald Link of Herbsaint, Aaron Burgau of Patois, Jean Stickney of Pralines by Jean, Greg and Mary Sonnier of The Uptowner and Glen Hogh of Vega Tapas Café will serve tapas sized portions of a signature dish. Both a live and a silent auction will offer great getaways, local art, jewelry and one of a kind experiences. On Saturday, November 8 the New Orleans Museum of Art’s Forty-Third Odyssey Ball, will be the first opportunity for patrons to preview Objects of Desire: Fabergé from the Hodges Family Collection, a major exhibition of works by master Russian jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé, many of which have never been seen by the public.The annual Odyssey Ball is among the most highly anticipated events on the city's social calendar.  Saturday, November 8 is the date for the PATIO PLANTER’S WHITE ELEPHANT SALE AND AUCTION, McDonald 15’s parking lot, corner of Royal and St. Phillip will be the setting of the annual White Elephant auction and Sale that includes dinners, art and many items donated by French Quarter businesses and residents to benefit the annual Christmas Caroling in the Jackson Square. Admission is free. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

The 2008 Mirliton Festival will take place Saturday, November 8 at Markey Park, Piety and Royal Streets from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Head to Audubon Park on Sunday, November 9, 2008 to participate in the 7th Annual New Orleans Kidney Walk. Participating walkers collect pledges and walk the 2.2 mile track around Audubon Park. One in nine adults in Louisiana is living with kidney disease and most don't even know it.. Walkers of all ages are invited to join in the fun by walking individually or forming a team. On Monday, November 11 from 5 :30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Natchez Steamboat, by Toulouse Street Wharf ,  you could support New Orleans Fire Fighters by buying the 2009  New Orleans Fire Fighters Look Hot Calendar. The Calendar seeks to raise funds for New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD); money raised will go toward the purchase of a mobile command van. New Orleans fire fighters will attend the party to sign calendars and meet fans. Everyone purchasing a calendar at the Natchez party will be entered in a drawing for a fire extinguisher donated by Home Depot.

 

This 2009 calendar is the second such project sponsored by the New Orleans Rotary Club.  Club member and local businesswoman, Gayle Dellinger, thought up the idea and managed the project which produced the popular 2008 calendar.  In June 2008, the Rotary Club of New Orleans presented a check to the New Orleans Firefighters Foundation for $75,000.  These funds purchased new uniforms for all the fire department personnel.

 

Talking about those hot firemen, they will also be at my Round Table Luncheon that will be held Wednesday, November 12 at noon at Begue's Restaurant of the Royal Sonesta Hotel.  The featured speakers will be the hot firemen that will be signing their 2009 New Orleans Fire Fighters Look Hot Calendar. We will cool off by guest speakers Michael Glassberg, a Sazeractivist and Ann R. Tuennerman, founder of Tales of the Cocktail. They will pay homage to the Sazerac, the official cocktail of New Orleans. Guests will learn its storied history and how to make their own so they can spread the story of the Sazerac to others in an effort to preserve its history as an official Sazeractivist. NEW ORLEANS HISPANIC HERITAGE FOUNDATION :AZUCAR BALL

The New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundation will host its elegant eighteenth annual fundraiser “The Azúcar Ball”.  This year, the theme of the event will be “Noche de Magia” or “Magical Night”.  It will be a magical night of dancing, fun and the celebration of our Latin heritage. Maestro Carlos Manuel Prieto is the recipient of the Galvez Cup.

This black tie evening will take place in the LaSalle Ballroom at the InterContinental New Orleans, 444 St. Charles Avenue with non-stop music from 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 am by Julio y Cesar y Rumba Buena.  There will a silent auction. The proceeds from the “Azúcar Ball” will provide much needed monies for the Foundation’s scholarship fund.
