The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra begins the new year with Resident Conductor Rebecca Miller's "Classics Series" debut. Performances are Friday, January 4th and Saturday, January 5th at LoyolaUniversity's Roussel Hall, at 7:30 and 8:00 pm, respectively. Each will feature Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 2, dubbed the "Little Russian" symphony for its compelling use of folk themes from the Ukraine, young American composer Pierre Jalbert's Chamber Symphony, and an incredible performance of Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2. by acclaimed pianist Faina Lushtak.
Pierre Jalbert (pronounced JAL-burt) is Associate Professor of Composition and Theory at RiceUniversity's Shepherd School of Music in Houston. He has received numerous awards for his compositions, including the 2007 Stoeger Award from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center for his contributions to the chamber music repertory and the Rome Prize. Rebecca Miller first encountered his music during her recent tenure as Assistant Conductor of the Houston Symphony. This vibrant piece amply demonstrates Jalbert's accomplished and innovative use of orchestral color and continues the LPO's season-long exploration of the best of recent additions to the repertoire, along with established masterworks.
These concerts were originally intended as a showcase for New Orleans International Piano Competition medalist Dustin Gledhill, but when a bout of tendonitis forced him to bow out, the orchestra had to look only as far as the Tulane University faculty, and Professor of Music Faina Lushtak, to find a distinguished substitute as piano soloist for the concerts. A Centaur recording artist, Faina Lushtak is currently head of the piano division at TulaneUniversity, where she holds the Downman Chair. She has consistently won praise for her interpretive powers and virtuosity from critics and audiences throughout the United States, Europe and Canada.
Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 2, Op. 17, "Little Russian" completes each concert. Tchaikovsky began work on the symphony in the summer of 1872, while vacationing at his sister's home in the Ukraine. He completed it back in Moscow that fall and it premiered in Moscow in February of 1873. It was an immediate success with audiences, critics and leading Russian composers. However, Tchaikovsky was not fully satisfied with it and premiered a thoroughly revised version eight years later, in February, 1881. It is that revised version that has become standard in the repertoire. The "Little Russian" is widely considered one of Tchaikovsky's most thoroughly joyous compositions and an on-going testament to his mastery of symphonic form.

French Quarter Laughter Club has undergone a magnificent Name Change!
Well...that is unless the members disapprove of the change!
And so, barring any disapproval, the name will become "Laughter Lightness
and Joy in New Orleans"
NEW Meeting now: Audubon Park, Main Entrance on St. Charles, to the right of the Entrance Fountain, under the trees.
New TIME: 4pm because of the early nightfall.
The meetings consist of LOTS of LAUGHTER!
The intention of the meetings is to...LAUGH!
LaughterYoga is here to pick up where the sorely lacking Mental Health
community leaves off...
Laughter helps to strengthen your heart and helps prevent
arteriosclerosis. I don't know about you, but preventing anything in my
body that ends in Sclerosis sounds like a GOOD THING!
Also...Laughter helps the production of Natural Killer Cells,
(cancer-killing cells!) Laughter also boosts the immune system, increases
the production of endorphins (runner's high) and DECREASES production of
tension and stress hormones like Cortisol and testosterone!
De-Stress and feel BETTER...and just laugh! it's EASY!
WE hope to see you, New Orleans!
Donations for expenses are accepted.

Presiding over his Funky Nation is Big Sam, a big man with an impeccable urban fashion sense, who blows the funk out of his trombone and refuses to let the audience sit still. Between solos and trombone riffs, Big Sam second-lines (a uniquely New Orleans style of street-dance) and gets the crowd going both in movement and in replies to his call-and-response MC-style. A talented group of jazz-trained musicians makes up the Funky Nation, bringing with them the improv-style associated with jazz and the horn-heavy front section that's the hallmark of big band funk.
THE BUCKTOWN ALL-STARS is a nine-piece Rhythm & Blues band based in Metairie, Louisiana. Featuring a powerful four-piece horn section, the group specializes in the melodic orchestration of 1960's Atlantic Soul made popular by such artists as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, and Sam & Dave; the brassy punch of 1970's classic acts like Chicago and Stevie Wonder; and the slick grooves of 1970's funk characterized by Earth Wind & Fire and the Average White Band. The All-Stars also acknowledge their hometown roots and the influence of New Orleans R&B artists such as The Meters, The Neville Brothers, and Dr. John. Add to this mix the group's youthful energy and enthusiasm, and the result is an exciting live performance which attracts music lovers of all types and ages. To this end, more than one observer has noted that the All-Stars are fun because they have fun!
