Written by: MargaritaBergen

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

Darling friends,

I have been totally immersed and having a great time in Tales of the Cocktail -the five-day celebration of spirit that is taking place at the Monteleone Hotel and many legendary salons in the Big Easy. Please visit their website at www.talesofthecocktail.

This weekend is definitely going to be very spirited since Harry Potter's fans have been eagerly waiting for the release of J.K. Rowling's seventh and final installment of "Harry Potter" books. There will be many parties at bookstores around the city but my favorite is the big block party tonight at 9 p.m. when the "Exchange Alley" in the French Quarter becomes "Diagon Alley." The Hotel Monteleone, Faulkner House Books, The Pirate's Alley Faulkner Society, NOTV, Bubba Gump Shrimp, and the Exchange Alley Association will host the party.

This weekend we will also be celebrating the Grand-Re-opening of Ray's Over the River at the   31st floor of the World Trade Center Building, 2 Canal Street. Phillip Manuel will be featured on Friday, July 20 from 5 to 9 p.m. and Kermit Ruffins will be entertaining at 7 p.m.   Music by DJ Captain Charles will follow after the shows. The restaurant will be featuring creole cuisine in addition to having spectacular view of the Mississippi River and the City. Check it out.

This weekend do not miss out pianist Rich Look's "An Evening with Rich Look" at Le Chat Noir. It is part of the series "The Piano Men at Le Chat Noir."  For reservation 581-5812.

Talking about Le Chat Noir, on Monday, July 23 you do not want to miss le proprietress  Barbara Baker Motley as Celebrity Bartender for the night along with C. Stocker Fontelieu. According to the press release, watch her in action as she recreates such favorites as the powerful "Barbara Wallbanger," the elegant "Cosmopolitan, " the ever- popular "Barb on the Beach," and as always, the Gonczy Martini -a house Favorite.  As Specila added attraction C. Stocker Fontelieu will be on hand to sell and sign copies of his biography: Just Who is Stocker Fontelieu Anyway? The Life and Times of a Gentleman of the Theatre.

On Sunday, July 22 from 3 to 6 p.m. publisher/writer Joshua Clark will be autographing his new book “Heart Like Water. Surving Katrina and life in its disaster zone- A Memoir” at Molly’s at the Market,1107 Decatur Street. The book signing will feature music by Jack Fine and Friends, with complimentary Abita and New Orleans Rum. The event is co-sponsored by the Faubourg Marigny Arts & Books,600 Frenchmen St., 947-3700.

If you like swing, Kick up your heels at The National World War II Museum with Sunday Swing. Professional swing dancers from NOLA Swing will be on hand  from 1 to 2 p.m. to provide coaching for dancers of all levels while local musicians play World War II era hits. The New Orleans Jazz Vipers will the featured band this Sunday. This free event is part of Stars and Stripes Summer, a summer-long tribute to the American Spirit featuring programs for adults and children and a special discount on admission for Louisiana residents. For more information, call 504-527-6012 x 359.

My darling friend Chanteuse Suzaune Yee McKamey will be at the Bombay Club,830 Conti Street on Friday, July 20 at 9 p.m.  and starting this Friday, july 20, my friends MaryFlynn Thomas  and Pianist/composer Jim Walpole will be performing the new Broussards Happy Hour from 5 to 8 p.m. every Friday and Saturday. Hope you could come by and have a cocktail.

NORD Crescent City Lights Youth Theater opens THE RED SNEAKS by Elizabeth Swados tonight Friday, July 20 for a three weekend run.

Friday Night Lampworking Demonstration will take place at  3924B Conti St. (near the intersection of Carrollton and Bienville). For details or directions call 504-482-6003 or email us at info@nocgi.org. 6:30pm - 8:30pm.

New Orleans Creative Glass Institute is pleased to bring back the demonstration series this summer beginning July 20th with lampworking demonstrations. Lampworking is glassworking using a torch to heat and shape the glass. Lampworkers create an unlimited variety of works including the most commonly know pieces, beads, larger pieces such as goblets and sculptures, and of course scientific glass.
Regional scientific glassblowers Jack Korfhage and Ben Spalding will demonstrate lampworking using scientific glassblowing techniques. Jack will make a glass coil condenser and Ben will demonstrate joining neck joints on a glass flask. The event is free and open to the public.

CULINARY EXHIBITION EXTENDED BY POPULAR DEMAND

WHAT’S COOKING IN NEW ORLEANS?:  CULINARY TRADITIONS OF THE
CRESCENT CITY TO REMAIN ON VIEW THROUGH NOVEMBER 17, 2007

July 2007, New Orleans, LA — The Historic New Orleans Collection will extend its current exhibition, What’s Cooking in New Orleans?: Culinary Traditions of the Crescent City, through Saturday, November 17. On display in the Williams Gallery at 533 Royal Street, the show is free and open to the public Tuesday–Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

In addition to extending the exhibition, The Collection is also preparing a fall culinary lecture series that will offer more opportunities for the city’s residents and guests to engage in that most-relished pastime: talking about food. The series is expected to begin mid-September and will feature presenters such as Judy Walker, food editor of the Times-Picayune. Visit The Collection online at www.hnoc.org for updates to the fall schedule.                                                                                    ;

The interactive exhibition, which has been viewed by thousands of patrons, is only one of the ways THNOC has been championing local efforts to preserve Creole cooking practices.

What’s Cooking in New Orleans? builds upon The Collection’s nationally acclaimed 2005 project “A Dollop of History in Every Bite,” which involved hundreds of area school children exploring local culinary traditions. In April 2007, Dollop was expanded to include more than 1,500 students in Jefferson and Orleans Parishes and to focus participants’ efforts on culinary preservation.

“Our culinary practices are an aspect of Louisiana’s history that is lived and enjoyed daily,” said John Lawrence, director of museum programs. “They are rooted in tradition and constantly changing.”

What’s Cooking in New Orleans? serves as an appetizer to understanding the cuisine that defines the city. With an eclectic display of cookbooks, menus, photographs, and other objects spanning the 18th through mid-20th centuries, the display introduces patrons to the cultural, economic, and social factors that shaped New Orleans cuisine, primarily Creole cuisine.

“What’s Cooking in New Orleans? explores the relationships between food and the city’s dynamic, ever-changing lifestyle,” said Lawrence. “The effects New Orleans has had on its food, and food has had on New Orleans are truly unique.”

To further entice visitors, What’s Cooking in New Orleans? offers video clips, podcasts, and an on-site recipe exchange. Two documentaries, We Live to Eat:  New Orleans’s Love Affair with Food and A Common Pot: Creole Cooking on the Cane River, both by New Orleans filmmaker Kevin McCaffrey, are on view as part of the exhibition.

Editor’s Notes: Digital images of the exhibition items are available upon request. Please contact Teresa Devlin (teresad@hnoc.org, 504-598-7170) with sizes and specifications.

Founded in 1966, The Historic New Orleans Collection is a museum, research center and publisher dedicated to the study and preservation of the history and culture of New Orleans and the Gulf South region.  For more information about The Historic New Orleans Collection, please visit www.hnoc.org or call (504) 523-4662.

This I know to be fact and it is the only fact that is apparent not only to Louisiana, but the rest of the nation as well. Louisiana as a State needs significant improvements. I cannot speak for politicians, because that’s all they are, politicians. But I can speak for an individual that I know has integrity and also has the way. Within a few short months he could employ over 400 people. Within a years time that number will escalate to well beyond that. He could also put many dozens of people in business for their selves. He has a plan to solve the construction problem in the 9th ward, and his works would not ever be flooded, even if the rest of the city gets it again because of inept Corp of Engineers supervision. He can make many prudent private investors additional incomes. He can even make common individuals wealthy and enabled to provide for their future security and retirement. He can provide safety and security for Louisiana, New Orleans, from a number of nature generated travesties. And he can even protect and restore the marshlands. He has ideas that will increase the fisheries industry significantly as well; He has a plan to save taxpayers multiple billions upon billions of dollars for years to come. The benefits of him, and the contributions that can made are too numerous to list on this thread. In short, it is poetry in motion, if the people want that, progress, real measurable progress. His name is William H. Smith and his website is www.strongconctrete.com in short you should be talking to your elected officials that are now in office about him. Understand for the most part they are simply smack people waiting for the end of their terms, and any candidate running for office should be asked if they are studied in www.strongconcrete.com If they are not, or want to shoot it down, it simply means they are self serving, or are in service to someone else that only wants to grind the state into deeper oppression and lack. The future, and the vote is up to you. More of the same in the upcoming elections? Or do you want change that evens things out and improves our lot as a collective citizenry?
