New Orleans City Park

Friends of New Orleans City Park just earned $50,000 as the winner of Redwood Creek wine and Planet Green's "Greater Outdoors Project," a national competition where environmental nonprofits submitted grant proposals that focused on specific restoration initiatives unique to each organization. Friends of City Park's Couturie Forest project earned the organization one of five finalist spots in the competition. In April and May, the public was invited to vote for their favorite project online at RedwoodCreek.com or by text message.

New Orleans City Hall

In an interview on WWL TV, Cynthia Hedge Morrell, who heads the Council budget committee, said the purchase of the Chevron building is not a done deal.  She also implied that the purchase was done for political reasons to further a political career.  Did she mean Mayor Nagin?

East Jefferson Hospital

The Commission on Laboratory Accreditation of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) has recognized East Jefferson General Hospital for providing “excellence of services.” EJGH Blood Gas Laboratory is among the nation’s leaders and remains on the list of CAP-accredited laboratories nationwide.

During this comprehensive review process, reviewers examined the laboratory records and quality control procedures for the preceding two years. CAP reviewers also examined the entire staff’s qualifications, the laboratory’s equipment, facilities, safety program and record, as well as the overall management of the laboratory.

East Jefferson General Hospital’s Director of Respiratory Services, Ken Duet says, “This accreditation validates that the Blood Gas Laboratory at East Jefferson General Hospital meets and exceeds the national standards established by the College of American Pathologists. It demonstrates to our patients that we subscribe to the highest standards of diagnostic analysis.”

EJGH has three Blood Gas Laboratories that operate in the NICU, Emergency, and Respiratory Departments. The hospital labs offer state-of-the-art technology and a specially trained team of medical experts. This combination of advanced technology and highly skilled professionals help to ensure the best quality of care for the patients in this community.

World Trade

On Tuesday, June 23, the World Trade Center and other organizations will sponsor a luncheon program at the WTC's Plimsoll Club on "The Canada-United States Partnership and its Impact on Louisiana."   The featured speaker will be Hon. Norris Pettis, Consul General of Canada, Dallas, Texas.

Norris Pettis was appointed Canada's Consul General in the summer of 2006. A former military officer, Mr. Pettis  leads a group of seasoned professionals in representing Canada's interests in a dynamic region of the United States that includes Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas.

Mr. Pettis graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and later earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Athabasca University. As an Infantry officer, he was commissioned into Canada's Royal Canadian Regiment and served in two of its three battalions as platoon commander, company commander and eventually commanding officer of the 1st Battalion. Committed largely to field work and training, Mr. Pettis also taught at the Canadian Army Staff College, where he was appointed dean.

Mr. Pettis' international experience includes an exchange tour with the British Army of the Rhine in Germany and two operational tours of duty in Cyprus including command of his battalion in the central sector of the island. He also completed a year-long tour during the Balkan war as chief of staff for the Croatian theatre of operations and as deputy commander of the Canadian contingent deployed to the region. Mr. Pettis spent five years as Canada's defence attaché covering seven countries in the Arabian Gulf region. Notable among his staff appointments were his tour as chief of operations and plans for the Canadian Army, director of training for the Canadian Army and director of protocol and foreign liaison for the Department of National Defence. Mr. Pettis also had the unique experience of commanding Canada's Northern military region.

Mr. Pettis will be available for individual consultations after the program.  To register for the June 23 luncheon program, call the WTC at (504) 529-1601, ext. 220, or register on-line at www.wtcno.org/programs.

Louisiana Gambling - - - - The AP has announced that Louisiana's state-licensed casinos won nearly 11 percent more from gamblers in May than in April, but the take was still down from a year ago, state police reported Tuesday. * ** * * * So why the budget shortfall in education? Wasn't the bilking of dollars from the gamblers and bored housewifes and welfare recipients via lotto tickets, scratch offs, truck stop casinos, reservation casinos, boat casinos supposed to fund higher education? I think I missed something there over the past 2 or 3 decades that this spiders web of manipulations has taken to establish...............
