Hotel Monteleone

The Hotel Monteleone, located in the heart of the French Quarter, has named Tampa resident, Sarah Gadola, winner of the NOLA Tweetcation, a social media based vacation give-a-way.

The Monteleone hosted the contest through Facebook, Twitter and blog, www.hotelmonteleoneblog.com <
http://www.hotelmonteleoneblog.com/> . The contest was held from October 13 and announced the winner on Monday, November 16. Contestants entered the sweepstakes by posting reasons they wanted a New Orleans vacation on hotel’s social media pages Facebook, Twitter and the blog.

“The Tweetcation was a great opportunity for Hotel Monteleone to engage with our audience via social media,” says Andrea Thornton, Director of Sales and Marketing at the hotel. “The Hotel Monteleone, like the New Orleans, appreciates the excitement and passion that people have for our city and is happy to bring someone here for a great time in the Big Easy.”

Chinese Drywall

Commissioner of Insurance Jim Donelon held a press conference today to announce help for home owners whose properties are contaminated with defective Chinese drywall.  Donelon said many home owners in Louisiana are vacating their homes after reporting foul smells, health problems and the corrosion of wiring and appliances due to drywall imported from China that contains higher than normal levels of the hazardous chemicals strontium and sulfur.  Some insurance companies are canceling these policyholders, citing vacancy or failure to maintain the home in insurable condition.

Once again policyholders are protected by a consumer protection law unique to Louisiana, according to Commissioner Donelon.  Policyholders who have been covered for more than three years by their homeowners insurer have the right to continue their coverage while vacating and remediating their home of defective Chinese drywall, even if the defective drywall constitutes a “material change in the risk,” as long as the home owner reports the issue to the insurer.  “Notification to your insurance company cannot be used against you and your premiums cannot and will not be raised by your insurer for such a report,” Commissioner Donelon added.  “I am here to make sure that insurance companies do the right thing and abide by our state’s three year protection rule and all other consumer protection laws on our books,” Donelon said.

Donelon said there is a second important area of assistance available to policyholders whose properties have been vacated or deemed to be in an uninsurable condition caused by defective Chinese drywall.  After making a request to the management of the Louisiana Citizens Property Insurance Corporation (Citizens), Donelon said Citizens will now offer coverage for these unoccupied homes with its Builders Risk Renovation policy.  Home owners who purchase this type of insurance from Citizens may pay less because it should be cheaper than the cost of a full homeowners policy.

Commissioner Donelon said he believes Louisiana’s defective Chinese drywall problem is only going to get worse, necessitating the immediate action he has undertaken.  “Following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, it’s believed that thousands of homes were rebuilt using drywall manufactured in China.  The number of new or renovated homes containing defective Chinese drywall is unknown,” Donelon added.  “It’s a tragedy that many of our citizens who were forced to rebuild their lives and their homes after the hurricanes of 2005 have become victims of circumstance yet again,” Donelon said.

Other measures taken by Commissioner Donelon include:

·         The formation of a Drywall Task Force within the Department of Insurance.  As members of the task force, Department staff will monitor the issue, answer consumer inquiries and meet weekly with the Commissioner to discuss new developments.

·         The appointment of an investigator at the Department to receive, track and follow up on consumer allegations of unfair insurance policy cancellations due to defective Chinese drywall issues.

·         Continued participation at the multi-state level in meetings and hearings on the implications to state regulators and insurers regarding defective Chinese drywall.  Commissioner Donelon has met with insurance commissioners from Mississippi and Florida on the issue and will participate in a public hearing hosted by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners at their next national meeting on December 7. (Department of Insurance Press Release)

·         Calling on the Legislature, Congress and the Louisiana Recovery Authority to help consumers by implementing the assistance program that to date has been funded to the extent of $5 million under the “Road Home” Program.  Far more funding is necessary by Congress to assist home owners, particularly in Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida, who were first victimized by the hurricanes of 2004 and 2005 and are now being victimized by the importation of this defective Chinese drywall..  Such measures being proposed include Act 487 of the 2009 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature by Senator Gray Evans and House Concurrent Resolution No. 185 by Representative Burns charging the Department of Health and Hospitals and the Department of Insurance, in consultation with the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors, to investigate the health risks associated with living in homes containing Chinese drywall and to make recommendations to the Legislature prior to the 2010 Session relative to insurance coverage issues.

Practice Max

PracticeMax announced it has signed a contract with Thibodaux Regional Medical Center, Thibodaux, Louisiana. PracticeMax will provide coding services for the hospital’s emergency physician group. The Thibodaux emergency department treats approximately 30,000 patients per year.

“We were very pressed for time with this decision, and PracticeMax was the only company that could accommodate us,” says Maxine Minton, director of physician services at Thibodaux Regional Medical Center. “Their Internet-based software is a major reason why they’re able to be so responsive and we were able to get started so quickly.”

PracticeMax began providing “paperless coding” services to Thibodaux in early August. Clinical documentation and patient demographic information is scanned at the emergency department, uploaded to PracticeMax, and prepared for the billing process by PracticeMax’s certified coders. PracticeMax will also deliver provider documentation training to improve Thibodaux’s charge capture and revenue performance.

NOMA

On Saturday, November 14, 2009, the Ralph Brennan Restaurant Group re-opened the "Courtyard Café" for the first time since Hurricane Katrina as part of a four month partnership with the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA.) The opening coincides with the Dreams Come True: Art of the Classic Fairy Tales from the Walt Disney Studio exhibition showing at NOMA November 15, 2009 - March 14, 2010, and the 72-seat Courtyard Café will be serving breakfast, lunch and snack items during regular NOMA business hours of Wednesdays noon - 8 p.m. and Thursday - Sunday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

"We were thrilled to learn about the Disney exhibit at NOMA and flattered to be invited by NOMA to provide foodservice to the estimated 80,000 attendees of this blockbuster show," said Ralph Brennan Restaurant Group owner Ralph Brennan.  "The Café's floor-to-ceiling picture windows and spectacular view of the live oaks, magnolia trees and lagoons of City Park offer art fanatics the opportunity to relax and enjoy delicious food, and we are proud to provide our snack, breakfast and lunch items to them."

Louisiana business, well it's "Saintly" to say the least. Love the $24 per square foot lease the owner of the building across from the Stupordome as well as the owner of the Saints is going to get from Louisiana to house 'State Employees' when in all reality, comparable floor space could be had for 3 or 4 bucks if the state just knew where to look. And of course other office space around New Orleans is going for 16, 18, 20 bucks in some instances... Sounds like Louisiana taxpayers are paying anywheres from 15 to 25% too much for that office space... And it could be as much as 80% if real alternatives were sought out and utilized... Yeah folks, one way or another, if you ain't goin' to buy a ticket fer the game, your tax dollars are still going to be used to support our wunerful little Saints while they run around in their black and gold tights chasing a football up and down some field.... What a shame.
