Louisiana Business News: Brain Drain, Secretary Clinton, Lieberman Keeps Seat, Housing Clash

 Housing Bailout Clash

 

At the House of Representatives Financial Services Committee, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson staked out the position that the controversial bailout was for banks and some members of Congress want the money to help homeowners.  There is deadlock on money for now as homeowners get foreclosures.  Paulson said that helping the financial institutions is the way to get out of the financial mess.  The treasury has used the 700 billion dollar bailout to help buy interests in numerous financial institutions.  Meanwhile, the bleeding continues.

Joe Lieberman

Joe Lieberman will caucus with the Democrats although he took a very strident position in helping John McCain over Barack Obama.  Lieberman will be allowed to keep chairmanship of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee

 

Secretary Hillary Clinton?

Hillary Clinton looks like the new Secretary of State as Obama officials are reportedly vetting her husbands dealings to determine any possible conflicts.  What was started to be a rumor is now widely being reported as an almost “done deal”.  Clinton was Obama’s main competitor during the primary.

HUD

U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Steve Preston will deliver the keynote address at the Convoy of Hope's inaugural HOPE DC event.  He will discuss the Bush Administration's efforts to build strong and lasting partnerships with faith-based groups throughout the country.  Specifically, Preston will talk about successful partnerships that have helped to reduce chronic homelessness and support Americans in times of disaster.  The event will be at 4:30 p.m. EDT,           Wednesday, November 19, 2008

 

School Choirs

As the holiday season approaches, school choirs from across the Metro New Orleans area have once again been invited to perform in the Main Lobby of the Royal Sonesta Hotel in the heart of the French Quarter.  The choirs are a tradition at the Royal Sonesta, which is adorned in holiday finery for the season.  Visitors to the hotel as well as our staff members appreciate and enjoy the performances, which are scheduled every weekday from 12:00 to 12:30 p.m. beginning December 1st though the 23rd.  All performances are free and open to the public. 

 

LSU Technology

Unicon, Inc., a provider of open source software consulting services for the education market, today announced that it has completed over twenty new open source services projects in the third quarter of 2008 for numerous colleges, universities, and for U.S. corporations: Cisco, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., and Pearson Education. These institutions and corporations contracted with Unicon to provide a variety of services for the Central Authentication Service (CAS), Sakai, uPortal, and Zimbra applications. The services included deployment, accelerated development, application and system integration, administration training, consulting, and support through Unicon’s Cooperative Support Program.   One of those projects is LSU

 

Po Boy Festival

Hungry for Fun?  Try the Po Boy Festival.  This festival was founded as a celebration of the storied sandwich and the role it has played in New Orleans’ culinary culture. The festival also highlights the ongoing revitalization of the Oak Street business corridor, which was designated a National Main Street in 2006 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and a Louisiana Main Street by the Department of Historic Preservation, which authorizes the program.  It will take place on Oak Street, between Carrollton Avenue and Leonidas Street on Sunday, November 23, 2008. Noon to 6 p.m.   Select vendors include Acme Oyster House, Drago’s Seafood, Galley Seafood Restaurant, Grand Isle Restaurant, Jacques-Imo’s Café/Crabby Jack’s, Mahoney’s Po-Boy Shop, Parkway Bakery & Tavern, Pascal Manale’s Restaurant, Vaucresson Sausage Co. Inc.  Musicians will include Rebirth Brass Band, Amanda Shaw and the Cute Guys, The Iguanas, Papa Grows Funk, Walter "Wolfman" Washington and the Road Masters, David Batiste & The Gladiators, and Los Poboy Citos.

 

 

French America

Following a 20-year tradition of French chambers of commerce abroad, the French-American Chamber of Commerce, Louisiana chapter will host the official event in Louisiana celebrating the arrival of the first Beaujolais Nouveau 2008 at the Foundry, 333 St. Joseph Street in New Orleans.

 

The 12thAnnual Beaujolais Wine and Food Festival will feature not only the newly released 2008 Beaujolais Nouveau wines but also a wide variety of Beaujolais Villages and Beaujolais Crus.

To enhance the delight, our most talented New Orleans chefs will prepare a bounty of culinary delicacies.

 

Participating restaurants include…

Château du Lac, La Côte Brasserie, Café Degas, Flaming Torch, The Feelings Cafe

Okay, okay. Our politicians are a mix of incompetent and criminal, our streets resemble the surface of the moon a wee bit... but a "Po-Boy Festival" - with great music no less. Dis fat boy will be dere if at all possible.
