LSU Health

Charles L. Brown, Jr, M.D., Professor of Public Health at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans, is the recipient of the prestigious 2007 St. George National Award, the highest recognition that can be given to an American Cancer Society volunteer.

The St. George National Award has paid tribute to exceptional American Cancer Society volunteers from across the nation for more than 40 years.  The award honors those who have lead community cancer initiatives that have significantly advanced the Society’s goal to eliminate death and suffering from cancer.

Dr. Brown is a long-time volunteer with the American Cancer Society.  Upon retirement from his practice as a Hematologist-Oncologist in 1998, he joined the faculty of the LSU Health Sciences Center where he is Professor in the School of Public Health.  After years of caring for and treating cancer patients, Dr. Brown turned his focus full time to cancer prevention and early detection.

He has represented the American Cancer Society on the Louisiana Cancer and Lung Trust Fund Board since the early 1980s.  The LCLTF Board oversees the operations of the Louisiana Tumor Registry which is an internationally recognized cancer registry.  In addition, they support cancer control activities in the state through the Louisiana Cancer Control Partnership.

Dr. Brown has led tobacco control activities in this state for many years and since the creation of the tobacco-tax funded Tobacco-Free Living program, he has served as Chairman of the statewide Steering Committee and Tobacco Program Director reporting to the Louisiana Cancer Research Consortium Board.  Working with ACS Advocacy volunteers and staff, Dr. Brown was instrumental in securing increased taxes on cigarettes and passage of Act 815, Louisiana’s first statewide comprehensive smoke-free indoor air act.

The Patrick Taylor Hope Lodge of New Orleans, which opened shortly after Hurricane Katrina, is one of about 30 ACS Hope Lodges throughout the country.  Free housing for cancer patients and their care-givers, as well as transportation to treatment facilities, is provided to cancer patients coming to the metropolitan area for cancer care.  Dr. Brown chaired the Hope Lodge Campaign Committee and currently serves as Chair of the Hope Lodge Operations Committee.

“This St. George Award is a fitting tribute to the dedication, caring and success of the myriad ways in which Charlie Brown has made a difference in the fight against cancer,” notes Elizabeth Fontham, DrPH, Dean of the LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Public Health.

Titan Energy Worldwide, Inc. announced that its subsidiary, Titan Energy Development, has received orders for five Sentry 5000™ Mobile Utility Systems, an all-in-one, self-contained trailer mounted unit built for emergency response, disaster relief and remote utility support. These orders are the first to be received through the company’s new national distribution arrangement with Katolight Corporation, a Tognum Group Company. The units will be deployed to three customers in the Texas, Louisiana, and the Baltimore/Washington D.C. regions.

“These orders mark the start of our partnership with Katolight, a worldwide manufacturer of mobile, stationary and custom power generation equipment. We are moving forward with our plan to increase awareness of the unique capabilities of the Sentry 5000 unit and to ramping production of the units,” said John Tastad, CEO of Titan Energy Worldwide, Inc.

Designed for fast deployment and easy operation, the unit is compact enough to be pulled by an SUV or pickup truck and operational within minutes of arriving onsite.

The directors of Region 8 and Region 12 of the Society of Professional Journalists invite all journalists and journalism students in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas to New Orleans at the end of March for a combined Spring Conference.

The conference starts at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 28, with critiques of student and young professionals’ portfolios, followed by a reception for attendees. The conference ratchets up on Saturday, March 29, with a full day of programming that includes discussions about the coverage of race and class, preparing to cover humanitarian disaster and a case study of one newspaper’s battle against government secrecy.

Of course, the highlight for many students attending the conference will be the presentation of the Mark of Excellence Awards for college journalism.

“We expect this conference to be one of the best ever for both regions,” said Travis Poling, Region 8 director.

“And did we mention the conference is in New Orleans?” added Sonny Albarado, Region 12 director.

Registration for the conference costs $45 for students, $75 for SPJ members and $95 for nonmembers. A registration form will be posted online and mailed out shortly.

Baton Rouge Loans

Four Baton Rouge businesses  are receiving loans through 2.5 million Seedo Financial Baton Rouge Small Business Loan Fund.  The Baton Rouge Small Business Loan Fund, managed by Seedco Financial, is central to Mayor Holden’s Economic Development efforts. The Loan Fund provides below-market-rate loans ranging from $5,000 up to $150,000 with flexible repayment terms, said Ms. Ausberry, Assistant Vice President and Community Reinvestment Act Officer for Capital One Bank. Start up funding of $2.5 million comes from the seven members of the Baton Rouge Bankers Round Table who contributed nearly $1 million and Seedco Financial who is contributing $1.5 million. The City of Baton Rouge has provided $500,000 for loan loss reserve and operating support. Entergy has contributed $50,000 and the Loan Fund is actively seeking an additional $2 million in loan capital to be able to reach its goal of financing 100 businesses in three years, said Baton Rouge Seedco Director Parrish Fruge.
