New Orleans Medical

The City of New Orleans Emergency Medical Services (NOEMS) department proudly announces that two of its personnel received the state's top honors at the annual Louisiana National Registered Emergency Medical Technicians (LANREMT) Conference this past weekend.

Dr. Jullette Saussy, Director and Medical Director of the NOEMS received the state's top honor as EMS Administrator of the Year. Sandra Dixon, a 23-year veteran of New Orleans EMS was also named the state EMT-Intermediate of the year. Members of LANREMT, emergency medical technicians and paramedics from across Louisiana and Mississippi attended the event that took place in Lafayette, Louisiana.

"We are extremely proud of our EMS department that continues to show its commitment to providing the fastest and most recognized response services to those in need," said Mayor C. Ray Nagin.  "This administration has always prioritized safety and we are honored that two of our own have been recognized as the best of the best in emergency medical services."

EMS personnel received the award on behalf of Dr. Saussy who is recovering from her final chemotherapy treatment. After multiple surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy,

Dr. Saussy has been diagnosed as cancer free.

"This award, while given to me personally, is a reflection of the pride, passion and dedication of the men and women of New Orleans EMS," said Dr Jullette Saussy.  "They are what make this organization successful.  They are what make it shine.  I am just blessed to be able to do what I love with the medics I love."

Earlier this year, Dr. Saussy received top honors at the EMS State of the Sciences Conference, otherwise known as "A Gathering of Eagles." She received the Michael Key Copmass Award, which is given to the Emergency Medical Services Medical Director who has demonstrated superior longstanding service, contributions and leadership in out-of-hospital emergency care.

Shreveport Technology

The Canal Winchester Local School District in central Ohio selected the ArcMail Defender, a Shreveport Louisiana  company for its email archiving solution to cost-effectively ensure compliance with updates to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. These updates require U.S. organizations to retain electronic data so it can be produced in response to discovery requests resulting from litigation.

According to David Dewese, district technology coordinator, the district’s increasing email volume and the larger attachment files sizes created the need for a more efficient, centralized storage solution. The district also needed a solution that was both cost-effective and low maintenance—and it needed to fully integrate with the Novell GroupWise platform.

Regents

The Louisiana Board of Regents will hold committee meetings on Wednesday, June 25, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Among other business, the Board will receive a report on the CALL adult learning initiative. The full Board meeting will be held Thursday, June 26, at 9:00 a.m.

Location: Claiborne Building, Louisiana Purchase Room (first floor); 1201 North Third Street; Baton Rouge

For the full meeting schedule, visit our website at www.regents.state.la.us.

Blue Cross

The employees of Fairway Medical Center in Covington have joined the Louisiana 2 Step program sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana as an official 2 Step team. The Louisiana 2 Step is a public health program encouraging all Louisiana residents to take two small daily steps toward better health: eat right and move more.

On Monday, June 30, Fairway Medical Center employees will move more as they kick off their Louisiana 2 Step participation with a Walk@Lunch event from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the company’s headquarters. At the same time, CEO David Guzan will issue a challenge to other North Shore employers to join his company in taking steps to a healthier lifestyle.

By joining the Louisiana 2 Step, Fairway Medical Center encourages its employees to sign up for the program online at www.Louisiana2Step.com. This free, fun and interactive website allows employees to set goals, track their weight and find a healthy weight and calorie range. The site also offers educational and motivational tools, such as virtual coaches, to inspire employees to make healthier lifestyle choices.

“We realize that with better lifestyle choices, employees tend to be happier and more productive,” Guzan said. “If we can give our employees the tools necessary to help them lead a healthier lifestyle, it will benefit them at home and work and may possibly decrease our health insurance claims expense over time.”

Guzan will open the walk event with brief remarks and will lead the first group of walkers on a course mapped out around the medical center’s campus. Employees will receive free Blue Cross pedometers and walking logs to help them track their steps. They will also sign up online for their company’s Louisiana 2 Step team and get more information on how to improve their health through both activity and healthy eating.

Recent research has shown that small lifestyle changes can add up to better health and lowered risk for obesity-related diseases. For example, eating five or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day can help prevent heart disease, cancer and other chronic conditions. Yet in 2000, 85 percent of Louisianians reported that they did not consume at least five servings of fruit and vegetables per day.

“The 2 Step is a great way for employers to let their workers know that physical activity and healthful eating can be fun,” said John Maginnis, Blue Cross vice president of Corporate Communications. “It’s easy to add a little extra movement to your daily routine or to reduce your intake of fat and calories.”
