Historic New Orleans Collection

The Historic New Orleans Collection is hosting a screening of New Orleans native and scholar of African American history and culture Maurice Martinez will present his documentary Wings of Wood (2007) at The Historic New Orleans Collection on Thursday, March 6. In the 24-minute film, Martinez examines the work of Afro-Creole carvers Charles Hutchison, Rudolph Hutchison and Eric Hutchison. Brothers Charles and Rudy Hutchison grew up in New Orleans’s 7th Ward, near noted carver Mitchel Lafrance. Lafrance, who had been a key figure in the Plaquemines Parish carving community, taught and influenced the Hutchison brothers, who went on to distinguish themselves by perfecting the “soft feather” technique. In this unique style, each feather is carved to scale from an individual piece of wood. As many as 5,000 pieces of wood may make up a single carving. The birds are so lifelike that when a fan blows air across the carving, the feathers ruffle.

In addition to his role as a filmmaker, Martinez is also a professor at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, a poet, photographer, musician and filmmaker. His heritage and scholarly endeavors are steeped in African American culture.

This screening is free and open to the public. It is presented in conjunction with The Collection’s exhibition Birds of a Feather: Wildfowl Carving in Southeast Louisiana, which is currently on display at the Williams Research Center, 410 Chartres Street. The exhibition will be open prior to the screening and admission fees will be waived. Reservations for the screening are encouraged and may be made by e-mailing wrc@hnoc.org or by calling (504) 523-4662.

Board of Regents Rules

Beginning with the graduating class of 2012, high school graduates will need to have successfully completed four units each of mathematics, science, English, and social studies to qualify for admission to a Louisiana public four-year university. The increased rigor in the Regents Core curriculum was approved today by the Board of Regents’ Planning, Research and Performance Committee to bring the Regents Core into alignment with the new “Core 4” curriculum recently adopted for high school graduates by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, and to help ensure that freshman students enrolling at the state’s universities are better equipped for college-level coursework.

“It has been shown time and time again that the best predictor of student success in college is the academic rigor of his or her high school preparation,” said Commissioner of Higher Education Joseph Savoie. “It just makes good sense – both for our students and for our institutions – to do all we can to give entering freshmen the best chance possible of earning a degree. We do that two ways: through our four-year university admission requirements, of which the Regents Core is a critical component, and through our community and technical college system, which provides an access point for students who can benefit from the environment of a two-year campus.”

In addition to an increase in the total number of math and science credits required for public university admission, the Regents Core will now require an additional unit of approved social science and the option of two units of specially-designed speech courses in place of the foreign language requirement currently required (in response to a consensus among college administrators that too many students come to college only marginally skilled in verbal expression). In addition, the new Core removes the requirement of one-half unit in “computer literacy,” since nowadays almost all students develop computer skills as a normal consequence of high school instruction and personal computer/internet use.

The net increase in required credit is 1.5 units, from 17.5 to 19.0. Full board approval of the measure is expected at tomorrow’s Board of Regents meeting.

In other Regents business, the Board received a report today on the recently-updated Fall 2007 statewide enrollment figures. According to the report, Louisiana’s public colleges and universities continue to recover from the enrollment hit suffered as a result of the 2005 hurricanes. Total enrollment across the state is up to 198,012 (including a near 6.000 student increase at two-year institutions) compared to 195,380 in 2006 and an estimated 177,230 immediately after the storms in 2005.

Notably, four of the New Orleans public institutions impacted by Katrina -- Delgado Community College, Nunez Community College, Southern University – New Orleans, and the University of New Orleans -- showed increases in first-time freshman enrollment last fall. In addition, enrollment in developmental (or remedial) courses at four-year universities continues to decrease, down to 18.7% in 2007 from 20.5% in 2006. Developmental enrollment stood at 35% as recently as 2000.

Still another promising statistic revealed to the Board today was a statewide increase in “preparatory” students, up to 7,519, compared to 4,937 in 2006. Preparatory students are high school students who enroll in college credit courses before graduation.

World Trade

On Wednesday, March 5 the World Trade Center, the Louisiana District Export Council, and other organizations will sponsor a luncheon program in the Plimsoll Club on “The Pending U.S. Free Trade Agreements with Colombia, Korea and Panama: What They Mean for Louisiana” featuring Leslie Schweitzer, Senior Trade Advisor, U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C.

As Senior Trade Advisor for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the largest business organization in the world with over 3 million members, Leslie Schweitzer created the TradeRoots Initiative in 1999, the only sustained national grassroots international trade education program in the country. Ms. Schweitzer continues to direct the program, designed to raise the public awareness of international trade, particularly to small and medium-sized companies. TradeRoots has been instrumental in gaining grassroots support for China PNTR, Trade Promotion Authority, and free trade agreements with Chile, Singapore, Australia, Morocco and Bahrain, and led the charge for grassroots support of the free trade agreement with Dominican Republic, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Nicaragua (CAFTA), and most recently Peru. TradeRoots continues with advocacy programs for pending agreements with Colombia, Panama and South Korea.

Louisiana Agriculture

Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M., wants local companies to represent the best of Louisiana food and other products at an Austin, Texas, food show in May.

"Louisiana cuisine is famous all over the world," Strain said. "Texans love our music, our culture and the way we cook. We're looking to show off our best products during our Louisiana Road Show at the H.E.B. Central Market food stores in Austin this year."

H.E.B. (Here Everything's Better) Central  Markets are hosting the Louisiana Road Show May 3-4, Strain said.

"The road show will feature everything that's fun, exciting and delicious about the Pelican State," Strain said. "We'll be serving hot, fresh Louisiana boiled crawfish cooked on a crawfish boiling rig on site. There'll be plenty of free food samples and Cajun bands.

"It's a chance to represent the finest Louisiana has to offer to the H.E.B. Central Market customers."

It's the first time the Louisiana Road Show has been invited to the H.E.B. Central Markets, Strain added. "It's significant because the Central Markets have a 24 percent market share of the Texas retail food market."

The Louisiana Road Show events will be held May 3, noon until 8 p.m., at the Central Market at 4001 N. Lamar and May 4 at the Central Market, Westgate, at 4477 S. Lamar.

To participate, Strain said the Louisiana product must currently be on Central Market store shelves.

Approved vendors also need to be at the store in time to set up and begin demos at noon. There is no fee to participate but vendors must provide their own tables and other supplies.

Strain said the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) and the Louisiana Crawfish Promotion and Research Board will be promoting the event with radio ads and a live remote broadcast during the Saturday show.

Vendors interested in participating should contact Lisa Manda, LDAF marketing specialist, at 225-922-1280 or via e-mail at lisa.manda@ldaf.state.la.us.
