Royal Philips Electronics today announced the release of the new Philips BrightView XCT, designed specifically to meet the needs of nuclear medicine. The BrightView XCT integrates Philips BrightView SPECT in a co-planar design with advanced flat-detector X-ray CT technology to acquire low dose, high resolution CT images and to improve registration confidence. This is the first time a flat panel X-ray detector will be used for CT imaging in nuclear medicine. This system, along with the new GEMINI TF Big Bore and new NM Application Portfolio on the Extended Brilliance Workspace, is currently on display at the Society of Nuclear Medicine (SNM) annual meeting being held in New Orleans this week.
Goodrich Petroleum
Goodrich Petroleum Corporation and Chesapeake Energy Corporation today announced they have entered into a joint venture to develop Goodrich’s Haynesville Shale acreage in the Bethany-Longstreet and Longwood fields of Caddo and DeSoto Parishes, Louisiana.
Subject to customary due diligence, Chesapeake has agreed to pay Goodrich approximately $178 million for the deep rights to approximately 10,250 net acres of oil and natural gas leasehold comprised of a 20% working interest in approximately 25,000 net acres in the Bethany-Longstreet field and a 50% working interest in approximately 10,500 net acres in the Longwood field. Chesapeake has also agreed to purchase 7,500 net acres of deep rights in the Bethany-Longstreet field from a third party, bringing the ownership interest in the deep rights in both fields after closing to 50% each for Goodrich and Chesapeake. Chesapeake will be the operator of the joint venture for the Haynesville Shale development and closing is expected to occur on or before July 15, 2008. Goodrich is retaining the shallow rights (through the base of the Cotton Valley sand) and the existing production and reserves with respect to its 70% interest in the Bethany-Longstreet field and its 100% interest in the Longwood field and is retaining its interest in both the shallow and Haynesville Shale rights on all of its East Texas assets.
New Orleans Back From Africa
n a press release by Mayor C. Ray Nagin of New Orleans, the Mayor said that he, “Councilmember Cynthia Hedge-Morrell and other members of the New Orleans delegation concluded a weeklong trade mission trip to three cities in South Africa—Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town.
“I am always overwhelmed by the international community’s continuing goodwill toward the recovery of our city. My focus has long been on ensuring that this city is ready to receive the opportunities that are bound to come when the Panama Canal expands in 2014,” said Mayor Nagin. ‘As I have reinforced in China and South Africa, New Orleans is a gateway to the world. It is important that we continue to tell the story of our recovery around the world as we work to increase visitors and businesses and develop international partnerships.”
The trade mission began in Durban with a ceremonial re-signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the two sister-cities in parliamentary offices with Mayor Obed Mlaba, Mayor Nagin and Durban’s Executive Committee. Following the MOU signing, Mayor Nagin delivered a public address about the city's recovery and emergency preparedness before Durban’s government officials, public safety staff and local residents. A question and answer session followed.
While in Durban, the delegation also met with Port officials and discussed ways the two cities might work together once the Panama Canal is expanded. These discussions will continue during a follow-up meeting by Durban’s Port staff to New Orleans this summer.
The South African Ambassador to the U.S. has visited Mayor Nagin in New Orleans in the past, and the country’s standing as the economic engine of the African continent means it has much to share.
"Our vision is to create a meaningful relationship between the City of New Orleans and the people of South Africa that will be mutually beneficial for many years to come,” said Tyrone Gunnie, First Secretary of Socio-Economic Affairs.
In Cape Town -- the second leg of the trip -- the delegation met with Tasneem Essop, the Minister of Environmental Planning and Economic Development; Angelo Manzoni CEO of WESGRO, the State's Trade and Economic Development corporation; and Minister of Health, Piere Uys. The group also toured a local, model health clinic.
"This mission provided a wonderful opportunity to learn more about HIV care in South Africa while exchanging information about what some of our challenges and successes in delivering care are in New Orleans,” said Fran Lawless from the City of New Orleans’ Office of Health Policy and AIDS. “I’m confident that the relationship we established with our South African counterparts will pave the way for future information exchange."
Cape Town's State Economic Development and Trade departments hosted in-depth meetings about the regions growth in manufacturing, port activities, film and culture and tourism.
In Johannesburg, on the last leg of the trade mission trip, the delegation met with the International Development Corporation (IDC), and the State-owned trade and development Deputy Counsel General and staff. Just as in previous cities, the meetings centered on economic development and trade, but particularly local government and private industry’s role in development financing for emerging sectors, entrepreneurs and small, minority-owned businesses.
The meetings ended with a roundtable discussion hosted by the city of Johannesburg.
"It has been very beneficial to engage officials at the state and city levels as well as the private industry in South Africa on best practices in the areas of port and economic development. We have seen from an international perspective how we can help our small and minority owned businesses have a greater impact and role in our city's economy,” said Councilmember Cynthia Hedge-Morrell.
In Durban and Johannesburg, the Mayor also held forums on emergency preparedness and the initial recovery steps following Hurricanes Katrina and the failed levees.
Johannesburg’s first responders are planning a visit to New Orleans where they will participate in emergency drills as part of their preparation for the FIFA Soccer World Cup in 2010.

According to various media sources, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Britain wants the European Union to impose new sanctions against Iran to pressure Iran to forfeit its nuclear program.
The sanctions are aimed at freezing the overseas assets of Bank Melli Iran.
The key is to provide incentives and disincentives for Iran to allow UN nuclear inspectors to ensure Iran is not creating an atomic bomb.

Iran's leader (Mohammed Some-thing-or-other) has gone "on the record" stating his country's nuclear program is intended for peaceful purposes only. I'm sure his word is as good as that of our own politicians, so ... no problem. Written by kpf
