Bobby Jindal: The Disappointing Governor of Louisiana

Written by: Jeff Crouere

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

Bobby Jindal was elected Governor in a landslide last year, riding into office on the hopes and aspirations of the vast majority of voters in this state. He campaigned as a fiscal and social conservative who would make major changes to state government. Sadly, after four months of his administration, the results have been mixed and somewhat disappointing.

For example, today we learned that the Governor’s floor leader has introduced an amendment to Senate Bill 87 that would delay tax relief until July 1, 2009. This is the bill that would rollback personal income tax rates to the levels that existed before the dreaded Stelly plan was enacted in 2002. Last week, Governor Jindal implied that the tax cut would be enacted on January 1, 2009, but this early enactment will have a $62 million impact on the current fiscal budget, so Jindal’s leaders now want to delay it until the following year. This is leading some commentators to remark that the Governor “oversold” the tax cut plan that he championed last week.

This is just the latest in a series of disappointments for citizens who were quite optimistic about Jindal. While there has been progress in reforming our ethical climate and making minimal business tax cuts, the Governor has not been aggressive enough in reducing the size of government. In fact, he submitted a budget that was larger than his predecessor. Just last week, his top budget adviser asked the legislature to restore cuts that were made in health and education spending.

With record government spending and surpluses driven by surging oil and gas prices, legislators are proposing a 300% increase in legislative pay. Unfortunately, the Governor has not forcefully denounced this reckless plan. He has taken a stand on the ridiculous effort to repeal the commonsense helmet law, doing the bidding of his political mentor, Mike Foster. Jindal then fired James Champagne as Executive Director of the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission for opposing the repeal.

With much hoopla, Jindal ordered a hiring freeze in state government, but it had so many loopholes that it was practically ineffective. The list goes on. Jindal asked for $240 million in new state government spending, but while spending is pushed, why have tax cuts been postponed? Jindal had to be brought kicking and screaming to the bargaining table with legislators on the issue of income tax cuts. Initially, Jindal did not support rolling back personal income taxes levels to the pre-Stelly rates. Only when he was pressured by constituents and conservatives did Jindal reluctantly change his mind. Now, we learn that the tax relief will not begin until July 1, 2009. So legislators want to increase spending, hire more employees and pad their own legislative pay immediately, while tax payers have to wait for tax relief. So it is quite infuriating that bureaucrats and politicians will enjoy the benefits of the surplus, but not long suffering taxpayers.

The bottom line is that Jindal was not the conservative that many people believed he was. In his first four months, he has not forcefully fought for reduced spending or lower taxes. He has not advocated the type of bold fiscal reform that is necessary to move Louisiana forward.

What has interested Jindal the most is the opportunity to be interviewed by national media outlets, such as the Glenn Beck show or the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. At the same time, Jindal has been reluctant to engage the statewide media and answer questions from local reporters.

It seems he is continuing to audition for the Vice Presidential position, but back in October of 2007, he was elected to a four year term as Governor. He should consider nothing else but how to fulfill this term in the best possible way.

We'll be fighting in the streets...... With our children at our feet..... And the morals when they worship will be gone.. And the men who spurred us on... Sit in judgement of all wrong... They decide and the shotgun sings the song.......... I'll tip my hat to the new constitution... Take a bow for the new revolution... Smile and grin at the change all around..... Pick up my guitar and play... Just like yesterday.. Then I'll get on my knees and pray............................ We don't get fooled again.................. The change, it had to come.... We knew it all along...................... We were liberated from the foe, that's all.... And the world looks just the same.... And history ain't changed.... 'Cause the banners, they'd all flown in the last war.. I'll tip my hat to the new constitution..... Take a bow for the new revolution.................. Smile and grin at the change all around... Pick up my guitar and play... Just like yesterday... Then I'll get on my knees and pray... We don't get fooled again... No, no!..... I'll move myself and my family aside.... If we happen to be left half alive...... I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky................ For I know that the hypnotized never lie.... Do ya?... Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!... There's nothing in the street.... Looks any different to me.... And the slogans are out-phased, by-the-bye........... And the parting on the left.... Is now parting on the right............... And their beards have all grown longer overnight......... I'll tip my hat to the new constitution... Take a bow for the new revolution.. Smile and grin at the change all around........... Pick up my guitar and play... Just like yesterday... Then I'll get on my knees and pray..... We don't get fooled again.............. Don't get fooled again........... No, no!........ Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!......... Meet the new boss.... Same as the old boss............

It is a shame that there happened to be people out there who actually tried to tell everyone about the real Bobby Jindal. Unfortunately, the voters didn't want to listen and the media was too busy fawning over the "wunderkind" to do actual fact checking and to be responsible in their coverage of Jindal's past elections. The truth of the matter is that for those of us who bothered to actually do our own research instead of allowing ourselves to be spoon fed the Jindal spin, we knew what kind of politician Bobby Jindal was. We know he is a job hobbing, committed only to himself, lying politician. Nobody should be surprised that he is flirting with being V-P. Nobody should be surprised that he would take one job only to try and get another one quickly (2006 Congressional elections anyone?). And nobody should be surprised that Jindal is just like the rest of the typical politicians. All talk, all spin, no real follow through on what he promises. In short, we told you so.

I think it would be a blessed relief if the state workers went on strike, or vacation, or whatever for a very long and extended period of time.... Maybe then, the citizens of Louisiana would get a firm understanding of what their taxdollahs is paying for, and how quite a few of them are REaly relly really unnecessary.. Oh I am sure it will be a little crazy for a week or two, but after that, they will figure out how to handle the criminals when they come to their doorstep, or how to haul off the trash, or how to tell their kids to put down the Xbox and pick up a book instead, etc., etc., etc……. Kind of neat concept, citizens policing theirselves and being responsible for their own actions or inactions. And people minding their own business, and calling the dog catcher every time your dog gets off its leash... Yes, I can see a lot of interesting possibilities....... Just Kidding... I say lock everyone up in Jail!!!!!!!

I know it's been a long time since I lived at Angola, but the last time I heard, "Wackenhut" employees were not state employees and they did not work at Angola... Wackenhut is a contractor or so I thought it was. I am still waiting for you to list your profession if you are critisizing state employees. If all state workers were to go on strike, maybe you would appreciate them more!! Oh, and an extra tidbit, wasn't the judge at Edwin's trial on oxy., a very powerful prescription drug. Drugs are everywhere, unfortunately.

Oh, I forgot to tell you what I do AngolaGirl...... I monitor state employees and report on their efficiency and productivity levels..... Problem is, no one gives a shtt,,,, including the taxpayer...... So I guess I should be one of the first ones to go when they start cutting useless state jobs.

Well, let me just say that it doesn't take much of an investment in education to work in a prison....... I mean, I don't know of too many colleges offering 4 year degree programs in carwashing.......................... but on average, no, a 'Wackenhut' groupie is not any kind of future I would aspire too. But back to my orgional thoughts on the subject,,,, It is painfully apparent to me that state workers are for the most part overpaid and underproductive..... In most instances a person could be trained within a couple of weeks to do the jobs they do..... Simple as that. In other words, if we could buy a state employee for what it is worth, and sell it for what it says its worth, split and share the difference down the middle, we would both be makeing some money...... Instead,,,,,, We simply keeping providing them with paychecks for crappy service.....

In fact AngolaGirl, I think I like your post the most………………….. Prisons…… Hmmmmm,,,, Cost/benefit analysis….. Are prisons produced to generate jobs, or are jobs degenerated to produce prisons???? Double edge sword if ever I can come up with one. I liked Burt Lancaster in “The Bird Man from Alcatraz” When he gave a dissertation on rehabilitation….. Which, according to the Webster’s dictionary of the time was interpreted as “To invest a man with pride”……. Or something along those lines, I forget, I was only 6 or 7 when I saw the movie, but the explanation stuck………. When looking at the prison population you will see that at the root of the problem is a lack of education – a poor economy – drug addiction/use as the most prevalent compositions of the average prisoners psyche. Now the severity of the crime committed directly correlates out to the childhood experiences of the convict and the degree of religious conviction acknowledged on its part. So in essence it would correlate out to social decay, or a lack thereof…… That is the higher percentile, and then you have those that are simply something else………… So, to invest with pride……………………. There is nothing wrong with shining shoes for a living, or doing ‘turn-key’ work, at least it is honest……. But when the rate of pay does not afford reasonable living conditions in exchange for those attentions, well then, there is one of the crux’s of the problem….. So how big of a drain on the economy is criminal behavior? A lot more than you think…. But worst of all, what happens if a criminal population is considered by some to be a benefit to the economy when it comes to hiring guards, policemen, building jails, providing a means of income for bail bondsmen, attorneys, judges, politicians, etc.??????? Now you have a hypocritical society………. So smash someone so they are of no use and do not compete for your job space, your income, your salary??????? Where is the investment of pride in a man in doing that, and what are the repercussions of doing so? The answer: More crime, more jails, more taxes, more sadness, more loss in productivity and an even greater chasm separating one from another……………………….. I could reduce the illicit drug problem in this nation to one one millionth of its current proportion in a 24 month time frame….. But is that what prison builders, taser marketers, police officers, attorneys want? Think about it….. We thrive on chaos here in the United States. We need chaos in the United States, we need poverty, violence, destruction and despair here in the United States…. Sadly, certain segments of our economy seem to be based and steeped in that abstract…… And some folks wonder why Jesus Christ had such a rough time of things………

Yeah AngolaGirl, I can see where being a turn-key is really demanding work..... I know/have come into contact with quite a few Angola workers as well...... Crack smokers by day, prison guard by night, go figure. I think the proper term for this could possibly be; 'Wackenhut' syndrome... Wacka-wacka-wacka-heh-heh-heh-heh...

Ahhh,,, you obviously do not know how many hardworking, underpaid state workers we have in the state of Louisiana. Slackers are found in every field of employment. My parents were Angola workers and I can assure you they were not slackers. John, you are right when you made the statement about prisons. How can you keep criminals locked up if you do not have the facilities.

SIMPLE response here JOHN, FIRST I WOULD GET RID OF THE STATE OFFICE YOU WORK AT, BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY YOU SPEND MORE TIME READING THE BUZZY BOREDS THAN YOU DO GETTING ANY WORK DONE FOR THE TAXPAYER WHILE ON THEIR DIME…………………………… And………………. Written by Dr. Albert Samuels on 5/21/2008……………….. WELL written…………………….. But………………… Written by KYJurisDoctor on 5/21/2008……………. Thanks ky jelly…… MORE JINDAL V.P. FLUFF FROM SOME a STATE WORKER, look you putz…….PUT DOWN THE DONUT,,,,, GET OFF THE INTERNET,,,,, AND START GETTING SOME WORK DONE,,,,,, LIKE YOU ARE BEING PAID TO DO……. WOULD YOU MIND???????............................. And you are close but………… ……………….Written by kpf on 5/22/2008………… AND KPF, IT IS NOT ONLY UP TO OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS AND STATE WORKERS TO DO WHAT THEY HAVE BEEN INSTALLED IN A POSITION TO DO, BUT IT IS ALSO FOR THE CITIZENS THEIR SELVES TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN……. SO IT WOULD BE LIKE A BREATH OF FRESH AIR IF A LOT OF FOLKS OUT THERE WOULD FOCUS ON FACTS, AND MAKE MOVES TO IMPLEMENT POSITIVE IMPROVEMENTS…….

<pardon this modified "double post"> ... What I DO NOT hear are comparisons to other politicians who Jindal should emulate. Are there ANY politicians that Jindal's detractors could point to as examples of "desired" behavior? Even one politician who lives and votes his stated beliefs? Last night I started Ron Paul’s book “The Revolution: A Manifesto” – think of him what you will, here’s a candidate whose record I can be proud of, a man I would gladly see holding any office including the highest in the land. His record speaks for itself; this representative has not let down those who voted him in office. Great book as it speaks of real issues in lieu of the shallow and sophomoric discussion “political debate” has become in this country. We have exactly the type of political “leadership” we deserve. Check out the excerpt on the NPR link below, I just love what this man brings to political discussion in this country. This is a revolution that is just beginning; one I hope will transform our political landscape. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=90438900

i couldn't agree more w/ the disappointment in the governor's first few months. so far it's not an empty promise because this type of change will take time, but his consistency in his initial message is lacking. Regards, William Croall Benton, LA P.s. i am one who left the state to pursue better opportunities, but there are some opportunities in the state now presenting themselves that drew me back home after 7 years.

Jeff, I also should add that you were not one of those who made excuses for Jindal dodging the media's questions during the 2007 campaign and refusing to debate his rivals. You deserve to be commended for that.

Jeff, you may be on to something about Jindal's performance in the first four months, although I have a different take on the situation. Jindal may be discovering the lessons that lots of so-called "fiscal conservatives" find out when they gain power: it's a whole lot easier to rail against "wasteful government spending" when you are the party or candidate who is out of power. From that position, it's easy to throw bombs at the administration. It's a whole lot different when YOU are the government and the one who bears the responsibility of making sure the trains roll on time. I also find it interesting that some of the same people who are disappointed that Jindal is not more of a "reformer" than he's turned out to be are the very ones who made excuses for him last year when he refused to debate his opponents and stiffed the media when they asked him legitimate questions about his plans for Louisiana. As a result, many conservatives took Jindal on faith that he was one of them. But his refusal to debate (except in the most superficial way) means that Jindal was allowed to get away with running on a vague promise of "reform" without committing himself to specific proposals to bring about "reform." If some conservatives are disappointed, they only have themselves to blame.

Rescinding the Stelly Tax is not a "massive tax cut." The Stelly bill was the first of several tax reforms that were supposed to take place, this is from Stelly's mouth. But our leges haven't done their job and look where we're at. Now they want pay raises and can't logically debate the reasons why. This state is in a mess and we need to clean it up. Get rid of the Stelly Tax, veto all non governmental spending that can't be justified, pass a lege pay raise based on what surrounding staes plus Alabama pay and put it into effect for the next election.

Please be specific about the cuts that you would like Jindal and the legislature to make to pay for the massive tax cuts that you favor. What will you get rid of? Health care for the poor? Assistance for mentally handicapped children? Close down a prison or two? Of course the idea for a pay raise for legislators is ludicrous and should be vetoed by Jindal. Of course Jindal should veto ALL of the special "pork" projects added into the budget by legislators. But before criticizing Jindal for not pursuing massive tax cuts, please explain to us all where YOU would find the money. I'm waiting for any responses.....

Agreed...... Perhaps before a legislature can introduce a bill, or vote on a bill, that legislature should need the vote and consent of the people to do so in each instance.... Sad things are, most people would rather watch Judge Judy, or Oprah Winfrey, or blog on this buzzy bored rather than doing something prudent like take a few minutes out of the day to figure out what is being proposed and voted on and send their 'vote' electronically to the legislature for formal action... I suppose people are what people are and we deserve what we get handed to us...................... Pity that.................... Someay somehow some kind of a solution needs to be arrived upon............................

Jeff,,, “””elected by a landslide””””””??????? The ‘majority’ really only equated out to being a couple of pebbles in the pond at best….. Seriously, 20 some odd percent of the voting population is considered to be a landslide?!?!?!?!????????????? Or is there something sadder at the root of this? The sadness that 50% of those capable, able, and having the right to vote are so disillusioned that they didn’t even bother to get out of bed that day to do so?? Or when faced with the choices they were offered to vote for felt so disenfranchised that they couldn’t see the point in doing so? But all landslide muses aside,,,,,, Bobby ‘Piyush’ Jindal…. Hmmmmm…… Well, to tell you the truth, if Henry Cho had of been running for Guv, I probably would have voted for him instead…. At least he has an honest humor about him, and we wouldn’t worry about having to be humored by the propaganda mill…….. Ehhhh,, I am lying through my teeth, I didn’t vote last year.. Why? Well, I was stuck in the middle of nowhere up near the Canadian Border trying to earn some money, so I didn’t have a chance to do so. Absentee voter ballot…..? You would have had to of experienced the situation I was in, it simply wasn’t possible……….. So I suppose that subject is moot………. But I wouldn’t have voted for Piyush anyways, I already understand how he works……… And I already know why I am not working……….. I don’t know which I like better where comprehension could be concerned……., Craig Fergeson, or Henry Cho, but back to Bobby…. And the smoke and mirror illusion that he may be under consideration as a V.P. running mate,,,,,, Actually that can be summed up in one word… NOT…… But this is an interesting article. Not very in depth where the scope and scale of rational questions presented could be concerned about his pursuit of agenda, but the central statement alluding to “Conservative or not” should be farther scrutinized… But from what I have seen, I have to say the answer to that query would be a resounding…… “NOT”………. Now when it comes to his kids or his family, sure, he is conservative… Maybe even when it comes to his close friends and their families, yeah, it is probable…… But when it comes time to include the ‘common’ element of Louisiana and accommodate for more of their needs and concerns in a prudent, practical, and effective fashion to the farthest extent that his executive power, privileges, and will can allow? Well now, that is a different slice of Pi altogether.. And besides, we all know that if they don’t have any bread, let them eat cake is the standard operating procedure followed. Pi is not on the menu….
