Governor Jindal Adds More To Louisiana Agencies

 On Wednesday, Governor Bobby Jindal made a number of announcements to Boards and other state agencies.

 

Here are some of those additions to state government agencies:

 

Governor Jindal announced appointments to the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities Board of Directors.

 

The Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities Board of Directors is an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities whose responsibilities include, but are not limited to, administering a regrant program throughout Louisiana that sponsors humanities programming, publishing the quarterly magazine Louisiana Cultural Vistas and promoting adult and family literacy.

 

According to federal statute, the board is comprised of scholars, members of the public and six gubernatorial appointees.

 

Appointments to the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities:

 

Lois Hoover, of Monroe, is currently retired and a member of the Ouachita Expressway Authority. Hoover will serve as a gubernatorial appointee, as required by statute.

 

Sandie Jordan, of Lake Charles, is involved with many humanitarian organizations including the Imperial Calcasieu Museum. Jordan will serve as a gubernatorial appointee, as required by statute.

 

Virginia Shehee, of Shreveport, is an executive at Kilpatrick Life Insurance Company and is the chair of the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra and the Strand Theatre. Shehee will serve as a gubernatorial appointee, as required by statute.

 

Governor Bobby Jindal announced appointments to the Louisiana Public Defender Board.

 

The Louisiana Public Defender Board provides for the supervision, administration, and delivery of a statewide public defender system.

 

According to statute, the board is comprised of the following 15 members:

 

  • Two at- large members appointed by the governor;
  • Two members appointed by the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Louisiana, of whom one must be a juvenile justice advocate and the other must be a retired judge with criminal law experience;
  • One member appointed by the speaker of the House of Representatives;
  • One member appointed by the president of the Senate;
  • One member representing the Louisiana State University Paul M. Hebert Law Center appointed by the governor;
  • One member representing the Loyola University School of Law appointed by the governor;
  • One member representing the Southern University Law Center appointed by the governor;
  • One member representing the Tulane University School of Law  appointed by the governor;
  • Two members appointed by the president of the Louisiana State Bar Association;
  • One member appointed by the president of the Louisiana Chapter of the Louis A. Martinet Society;
  • One member appointed by the chairman of the Louisiana State Law Institute's Children Code Committee; and
  • One member appointed by the executive director of the Louisiana Interchurch Conference.

 

Appointments to the Louisiana Public Defender Board:

 

James Boren, of Baton Rouge, is a self employed attorney with over three decades of experience and a member of the Louisiana Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Boren will serve as a representative of the Louisiana State Bar Association, as required by statute.

 

Cleveland Coon, of Baton Rouge, is an associate law professor at the Southern University Law Center and a member of the American Bar Association. Coon will serve as a representative of the Southern University Law Center, as required by statute.

 

 

Governor Bobby Jindal announced appointments to the Board of Commissioners of the Amite River Basin Drainage and Water Conservation District.

 

The Board of Commissioners of the Amite River Basin Drainage and Water Conservation District serves to govern all flood control, public drainage and water resources development, reservoirs and diversion canals in the district.

 

According to statute, the board is comprised of 13 gubernatorial appointments, subject to senate confirmation. One member is appointed from the district at-large and the remaining twelve members consist of two representatives from each parish within the district selected from nominations submitted by their respective legislators.

 

Appointments to the Amite River Basin Drainage and Water Conservation District:

 

Reda Cockerham, of Greenwell Springs, is a real estate consultant with C.J. Brown Realtors and is a member of the Central Chamber of Commerce. Cockerham was nominated by her legislators to serve as a representative of East Baton Rouge Parish, as required by statute.

 

Donald Thompson, of Baton Rouge, is the co-owner of American Press, a printing company, and is an East Baton Rouge Parish Constable. Thompson was reappointed to serve as an at-large member.

 

Governor Bobby Jindal announced the appointment of Wanda Bennett to the Sparta Groundwater Conservation District.

 

The Sparta Groundwater Conservation District serves to study and survey the groundwater resources in the district regarding issues such as conservation, land surface subsidence and groundwater quality degradation. The board advises the commissioner of conservation based on their findings.

 

According to statute, the board is comprised of 19 voting gubernatorial appointments including one member each from the parishes of Bienville, Claiborne, Jackson, Lincoln, Morehouse, Ouachita, Union, Webster, and Winn.  Additionally, one member is appointed from Bossier, Caddo, Caldwell, LaSalle, Natchitoches, Richland or Sabine parishes and one member is selected from nominations submitted by each of the user groups of wood product industry users, agricultural users and other industrial users. The remaining six members are selected from nominations submitted by various governing entities of municipalities within the district that have a minimum use of five hundred thousand gallons of water per day.  

 

Wanda Bennett, of Benton, is a member of the Bossier Parish Police Jury. Bennett was nominated by the Bossier Parish Police Jury to serve as a representative of a municipality using a minimum of five hundred thousand gallons of water per day, as required by statute
