Governor Jindal, Legislature Mooning Louisiana Over Pay Raise

Written by: Stephen Sabludowsky

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

Is our Governor--Jindal the Spineless, the Bonehead or the Deceiver?

It pains me to express such since two weeks ago I praised him effusively after a press conference.

Now, the question is whether Dorothy should help him find a noggin, starch for his courage shirt or a light beam to honesty.  Something is now sorely lacking in our Governor.  Meanwhile, the honeymoon clock is screeching.  The love affair with Bobby Jindal is officially dead.

More importantly, the public needs answers, now, for Jindal to be effective in the future.

It appears that certain legislators put a legislative gun to Jindal’s head and threatened that the Jindal reform days were numbered unless his administration fulfilled a prior deal on legislative salaries.

It also appears that when Jindal realized the public outrage engulfing the legislative pay issue, his Administration tried to manage the disaster and minimize a “pledge” it previously made with the legislature.  Breaking the pledge would have been breaking his word but keeping his pledge with the legislature meant breaking his word with the public.

On Friday after the House voted for a compromise, Jindal said, “.  I will not veto this as it is very clear to everyone that the result would be a grinding halt to the tremendous reforms and progress our state is making.”

Which means the screws were turning on the Governor, yet, the Louisiana voters were getting screwed by the very government officials who were hired to represent our interests.  .

After Monday’s (yesterday) Senate vote to support the House compromise on the legislative pay raises Jindal said, “I will keep my pledge to let them govern themselves”.

Which statement by itself raises a cache of questions:

Topping of the list is:  Specifically, and in detail, what was the pledge, when was it given, to whom and what were the circumstances in terms of time, place and content?

Was the pledge a quid pro quo, which appears obvious?  If so, did the quid involve his ethics reform package?  Or did it involve legislation that specifically targeted his own campaign’s ethics transgression?  We just don’t know, which is why we need to know.

More importantly, the public has a right to know.  Unfortunately Jindal this session wants to put a Big Hush on administrative communications, calling them privileges.  He wants more public privacy and less open government.  What transpired this past week punctuates the compelling need for public access which he promised us when running for Governor and during various occasions after he was elected.

Regardless, it is absolutely astounding that Jindal would make such a bonehead pledge in the first place when budget cutting and halting government benefits for the privileged were basic “Jindal Revolution” tenets.   Yet, something reeks terribly about the “pledge” and the facts and circumstances related to the entire selfish legislative grab bag.

For instance, why did the Governor (who certainly is known to be a “words smith”) say “I will keep my pledge to let them govern themselves”.

“Govern themselves”?  Just how far does this “governing  themselves” pledge go and what does it cover?

By contrast, why didn’t Jindal say “I will keep my pledge to let them set their own salaries”?

Yet, no matter how broad was Jindal’s “pledge statement” announcing an agreement to allow legislative self-governing, Jindal’s actions evidence inconsistency.  So far this session, the Governor has vetoed legislation this session.  So far this year, the Governor imposed his will on the legislature regarding income reporting and perks during Special Session I.  But, when it came to pay raises, Jindal has decided to keep his pledge, so why the marriage to an undefined pledge?

In short, the people have the right to know if this pledge involved only the pay raise or other matters.  If the pledge only related to pay raises, then why didn’t this “articulate” Governor say so in the first place?

The bottom line is—this entire controversy--from the pledge,  to his decision not to veto the pay raise needs to be sharply investigated by the media and then possibly by law enforcement professionals.  Jindal and legislators must meet the press and answer the hard questions or else doubt will forever linger and his administration will go down the tubes.

If we do not get straight answers, law enforcement officials should intervene.  When threats were made about shutting down government that’s arguably extortion if personal matters (legislative income) was involved.

Only after a full vetting will the voters know the circumstances surrounding the pledge, whether serious laws were broken, and about the legislature-Administration dealings.  Only then will the entire truth ever be told.  Only then will true reform ever take place in Louisiana.  Only then will Louisiana voters know if Bobby Jindal and his administration possesses the competence, the honesty the courage and the openness to take Louisiana into the “promised land”.

Until the voters secure these answers, the Jindal administration and the members of the legislature who voted green instead of clean, should not be trusted.

In the meantime, Jindal should veto this legislation and the people should demand total transparency in the administration.  Our future is too important falling down the black hole the Governor wants to grant the public about his own affairs.

Bobby Jindal is no longer just the whiz kid.  He is Governor.  The public must always come first.  Although he certainly appears to hold greater political aspirations, he will go nowhere, nor will the state until “Pay Raise Gate” is fully examined.

No honeymoon lasts forever.  Reality sets in like the sun.  Which is exactly what Louisiana needs immediately—sunshine on the administration and the legislative branch.  Until then, we’re clearly getting “mooned”by our leaders.

Jindal has now allowed 90 bills to become law without bothering to sign them. That is four times more unsigned bills than the four previous governors unsigned bills added together. No wonder he can not veto the legislators pay raise when he can not even be bothered to do his job as governor. http://www.2theadvocate.com/news/20637984.html

RhettsWife, my dear, nothing derogatory was implied when I offered up my recommendation of Steely Dan.... He is a virtual maestro when it comes to jazzy melodies, and harmonious non-sensical rock and roll style lyrics that “Just satisfies the Soul” along with some uplifting mid riff blues.... I think you will like the mixes........... The ‘Pop’ value is great, and you just have to dig that smooth saxophone!!!!! My gift to you............... I also like Glenn Miller, Count Basie, as well as a host of others..... So swing girl! Swing!!!!!

Oh, come on Stephen cut the crap, regardless of what Jindal would have done on this issue you would have something negative to say about it. I don't mind the legislators giving themselves a raise but doubling the salary is rediculous and I think Jindal SHOULD VETO the bill and lets see where the buffalo chips fall. If its on the legislative side we all know what is good for the state come reelection time for all that voted for this atrocious salary increase and vote them out, which I doubt Louisianans will do. Thank goodness my newly elected Senator and Representative didn't vote for the pay increase. I suppose the part that really chaps my rear is I've been told year after year the, legislators, can't find the money to raise salaries of PCA's, Personal Care Attendant, from $1 to now $3.50 per hour. We get hourly help from anywhere between 10 to 35 per week. The pay rate now is $7.50 and the 50 cents raise hasn't been in very long and to but honest I think this raise was because of good management of the vendor that oversees the program not a state raise. By the way this programs name called the "State Waver set-a-side" for handicap, quadriplegics and the likes to help keep a spouse, an adult child home and out of nursing homes which cost the state even more. Those that voted against it but will take the increase are hipocrates. By the time you add the $37,700 plus a flat $6000, a stipend of $143.00 per day while in session, whether there or not; insurance state, taxpayers, 75% of the premiums, plus the special sessions the Governor calls it all amounts to well over $60,000 a year. Those the live close enough commute daily. Those that don't have the privilege of renting a furnish apartment owned by the state for $300 a month.

I think a citizen's Group should get started and get started now. You jounalist or those who already have a following should ramrod this effort. OUr legislatures have never feared the voters. They alwasy say pass the tough stuff on the front and by election time, they will forget it/. Whomever is capable of inniting a citzens recall group should get ready and see how many will join. Leadership is calling for someone with the skills, motivational abiltiy, and drive to form a ciitzen's group state wide. Bobby Jindal sounds like someone who saw a crime taking place, but said he did not want to get involved. DON'T FORGET TO THANK THOSE SENATORS WHO VOTED NO. aLL WE NEEDED WAS ONE VOTE FOR NO AND IT WOULD NOT HAVE PASSED.

Dears, there is only one action for the citizens of this state to take and that is RECALL PI and THOSE THAT VOTED FOR THIS PAY RAISE. Hurricane Recall must start to twirl the winds of Louisiana and with it will ultimately rise the leadership that will speak for the citizens of this state and not simply for one's own sake.

Just what reform legislation was the governor fearful of having derailed? This was supposed to be his workforce session. Reform was the first special session. He doesn't want any pushback on his controversial cabinet salaries. "You approve my salary request, and I'll allow yours to pass." Duh. Everyone in the press seems to have missed the connection. So Jindal approves $5.4 million in additional annual expenses to get his guys a couple of hundred thousand.

Jack, you don't know Jack. Perhaps in California and Tinseltown a person's word is meaninegless. Here in Louisiana, it is our bond. When you promise something on the campaign and then once you get elected you change your promise and make a pledge to do the opposite, we call it a broken promise, sometimes a lie but no matter what, the person cannot be trusted.

I live in California and hence am not affected by any of this directly. However, I have been watching Louisiana politics quite closely. I don't understand why you guys heap praises on Jindal one minute and then throw bricks the very next minute. Legislators are people too. If there has been no raise since 1980, what is wrong with a raise now (as long as it is reasonable)? I think that Jindal will make mistakes just like anyone else but if from the overall scheme of things if he can lift Louisiana from the doldrums in the long term, none of you are going to complain about the raise. Time will tell.

Shame of it is though, I KIND OF ACTUALLY THINK THAT IS WHAT THE AVERAGE VOTER WANTS...... crazy as it seems, it appears to be sort of evident......

Jindal is being groomed for national politics. Louisiana is merely a stepping stone. We just happen to be the stones he is stepping on. He has no intentions of being even a one term governor, if not called up for VP, a cabinet position is in the works. Why aren't we seeing any of this in the national media? Oh yes, it's newsworthy..possible VP candidate has lost his spine, pigs eating at the trough!! All the news organizations, the RNC, John McCain...should all hear about this. We the people need to take control of the government that is supposed to belong to us. Seems our representatives have forgotten that little fact. Make your voices known.

Jindal is a deceiver making a backroom deal with legislators and pretending to oppose the very deal he made. Nothing has really changed in Baton Rouge.

I agree with everything stated in this article. Jindal has shown himself to be yet another "good 'ole boy" who wishes to "go along to get along". I have respect for those with whom I disagree when they are both principled and consistent. Jindal is neither of those things let alone both. In 1990, then Gov. Roemer, another "reformer" promising to be different from all the rest, publicly stated his opposition to a number of bills, including the land based casino by saying they were bad government and bad for the state. Yet he did not veto them. Roemer's duplicity and hypocrisy on those issues led to him running third, the result being the Edwards-Duke runoff. Jindal's saying publicly that he is opposed to these egregious pay raises, but he will not veto them is a shameful exhibition of political hypocrisy and political cowardice. He is no different from the bad political leadership of the past.

How come everyone including Bayoubuzz seems to have forgotten so conveniently Blanco's gift of over onehundred fifty million dollars to the company overseeing Road Home Programme. That huge change order was executed without anyone's knowledge. The job of United States Congress is also voluntry. Why not let every elected position work for minimum wage!Might be able to wipe out National debt. Penny wise and pound foolish.Steve, you have very harsh words for the legislators and Governor. Try working even part time for $15,000 plus allowances. Last time I hired an attorney, the charges were $350 per hour.Times Picayune published yesterday annual compensations of CEO's of varous firms. Runs into mega millions. You need to go on an attack with vengence on everything that is wrong with the system rather than keep splitting hairs on saleries of elected officials which on an overall prospective will have zero impact on our daily life.

Why don't ethics laws preclude these guys from voting on a matter in which they clearly have a significant economic interest? Most govenmental bodies that can change their own pay levels can only effect pay after the next election. What's different here?

Jindal could care less about louisiana and that is why he paying the legislators off for their support. Transparency was one of his biggest lies. Tucker and Jindal cut a backroom deal to for jindals phony ethics bills and now Jindal second biggest lie was he would not allow the legislators to give themselves a big raise. Jindal could prove this wrong by vetoing this bill and letting the public hear from tucker just what kind of deal was made. Jindal has also let 24 bills become law without his signature, just in case someone says anything, he can always claim he did not sign them. The legislators are running Louisiana and jindal is nothing more than a fake puppet on a set of strings.

Stephen, I have just read on the Dead Pelican from a Jindal Election Brochure that Governor Jindal promised to "prohibit legislators from giving themselves raises that take effect before the subsequent election." I KNEW that he had made a campaign promise to restrain the Legislature from its usual excess. In his own words he stated exactly what the people are demanding. This bill should be vetoed. At the very least it should not take effect until after the next election. I am so disappointed In Governor Jindal. I cannot understand why he refuses to veto. Actually I can. He feels that his reform package is important to the state and evidently the legislatue has convinced him that it is DOA if he gets in the way of this raise. I happen to be among those who say that it is the people who should be #1 and the Legislature stands in the way of progress at their peril. The People should be the power. Guess I am having trouble believing that Jindal is so naive to believe the Legislators on anything. This is a power play as much as anything else and it is not over by a long shot. He should take them head on right now on this issue which has the people behind him.

Jindal is a spineless coward and we long suffering public should institute a recall drive to get him out of office and install someone who truly cares about the state and it's citizens. As for that fat pig who started all this, I find the picture of her with her fist raised in a power salute offensive. I hope she falls into the trough she and her greedy collaborators are feeding from. Wouldn't it be nice to have a representative for NO East who really cared about the constituency and the area, rather than focusing on greed.
