Louisiana Woman Of The Year Chosen

Written by: BayouBuzz Staff

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

The Bayoubuzz readers have chosen the Bayoubuzz Louisiana Woman of The Year.  The honor goes to Gilda Reed from the New Orleans area who is an educator at the University of New Orleans and who ran unsuccessfully for Congresswoman for the First Congressional District last year as a Democrat.  She has  also fought tirelessly for many social civic and civic causes.

The methodology utilized by Bayoubuzz was totally democratic.  The audience chose the “candidates” and voted for the winner.  Congratulations to Gilda Reed.

Annette Loria came in second.  According to her husband Frank, Annette holds “a 9-5 job but is responsible for the constant care of the elderly. One elderly man is in need of her daily care and much of his hygiene needs. Another elderly man, 92 years of age, is in constant need of her care as well. Also, she cares for another woman who is in her late 70's and is incapable of caring for all of her 92 year old husband's needs. (For many years, until she had to care for these folks, she delivered to the elderly through Meals on Wheels. She also worked for Operation Blessing, getting groceries and finances to pay electric bills).  Frank Lorio also said, “This woman is tireless. She is amazingly devoted to her husband of thirty years and has given up a corporate life that without question would have cast her in the national, if not international spotlight.”.  Our thanks to Annette Loria.

Audrey Nabors-Jackson won the third spot.  According to the person who nominated her, Audrey Nabors-Jackson, “At age 81, she has not yet begun to slow down. A 1981 retiree from the Baton Rouge School System, she has busied herself civically, politically and as an avid social action agent making sure that her involvements serve her community, state and nation. Through her church, jobs, civic and social organizations, and her political involvement she has been a reckoning force locally, statewide and nationally.”

Christy Fast Kane of Louisiana Appleseed came in fourth.  Ms. Kane is an attorney for Adams and Reese Law firm and according to the person nominating her, “Kane stepped into the leadership role of the state’s struggling legal pro bono services chapter, Louisiana Appleseed, part of National Appleseed, a nonprofit network of 16 public interest law centers across the country whose mission is to develop practical and lasting solutions to chronic injustice and focus on changing policy in the legal arena. Louisiana Appleseed asks top private practice lawyers, corporate counsel, law schools, civic leaders and other professionals to commit pro bono time to address problems at their root causes, producing practical, systemic solutions to effect change.

The fifth spot went to Stacy Head, City Councilwoman of New Orleans.  Head is serving her first term in that spot and recently made headline news with her very public confrontation with a high Nagin Administration official.  Many consider Head as a future political force supporting good government.

These five top vote-getters were part of a group of over twenty women who were nominated.

Bayoubuzz feels that the winners represent a wonderful cross-section of women in Louisiana, from those who are home-makers to a leader of an international city.

Bayoubuzz thanks all of Louisiana’s women and the thousands of people who participated in the online ballot.

Keep digging, kpf....Gilda Reed was a very transparent candidate-- She's exactly the "honest" courageous leader you've been screaming for.... 'tis a shame she's not running for political office again- But, she is still doing GOOD for the community...in many ways (we'll all see her video soon- She's beautiful inside and out.)

No "implications" - I just Googled her name - and among the "hits" was an interesting site. Neither implications nor accusations; simply an interesting site, particularly when you use the zip code feature to see what contributions are made - you'll find me in "70150" - where my PO box is located.

Kpf, what are you implying? She ran for office. Did you google contributions for other people running for office? I don't get your post unless you are just giving us information without making any specific accusation. Please explain.
