The Gvernor's Office on Women's Policy is partnering with the LouisianaCenter for Women & Government and others to present a leadership training institute Friday and Saturday, November 14 and 15, 2008, at the Holiday Inn Select in Baton Rouge.
Louisiana Representatives Nita Hutter and Karen St. Germain are serving as honorary co-chairs for the leadership training institute. Other members of the planning and development team include: Elizabeth Dent, Chair; Tanya Freeman and Dale Norred, Co-Chairs. The theme of this year's leadership training institute is Strategic Command: Tactics That Win.
The opening reception is set for 4:30 to 6:30 PM Friday at the Louisiana State Archives and honors Governor Bobby Jindal and Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu, along with former Governors Mike Foster, Buddy Roemer and Dave Treen. Former Governor Kathleen Blanco and former Lt. Governor Melinda Schwegmann will serve as honorary co-chairs for the reception.
Partners for the 2008 leadership training institute include the Lafourche Commission on Women, American Majority, Inc. and Louisiana Women's Foundation. These non-profit and non-partisan organizations support initiatives that help train and equip leaders. The Louisiana Women's Foundation supports the goals and mission of the Governor's Office on Women's Policy and other programs, including Louisiana Women Leaders, which enhance or expand opportunities for women in Louisiana. The American Majority, Inc. trains and equips a national network of leadership committed to individual freedom through limited government and the free market.
The LouisianaCenter for Woman & Government at NichollsStateUniversity was established in 1990 to help encourage the future leadership of women by preparing them for public service through nonpartisan provision and support of education. As part of the center's mission, it develops programs to make women more aware of the governmental process in general and urges women to participate actively in that process on an ongoing basis. The center sponsors internships in state government offices - including the Governor's Office on Women's Policy - to college students from around the state.
Members of the LouisianaCenter for Women & Government Leadership Council will meet in business session immediately following the opening reception. There they will select the Center's 2009 Hall of Fame inductees to be honored at a ceremony and luncheon on March 28, 2009. Political strategists James Carville and Mary Matalin will keynote that event.
Following Friday evening's events, the institute continues Saturday morning and features Dr. Sam Bacharach, CornellUniversity professor and best-selling author of Get Them on Your Side and Keep Them on Your Side.
Keynote speaker at Saturday's luncheon is Hota Kotb, co-anchor of the Today show since August 2007. Kotb has also been a Dateline NBC correspondent since April 1998 and the host of the weekly syndicated series Your Total Health since September 2004. In 2005 and 2006, she covered the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The story was very personal to Kotb, who lived in New Orleans for six years, 1992-1998, while working at WWL-TV.
Afternoon sessions include an expert panel on media damage control and a featured presentation, A New Kind of Leadership: Strategies Learned from Columbine, by Nicole Nowlen, a former ColumbineHigh School student who survived the 1999 massacre and has shared her story with audiences throughout the country.
Media training is offered to all participants throughout the day on Saturday. Special arrangements have been made so that leaders have the opportunity to speak in front of the camera as well as review their efforts while receiving critique from professional media trainers.
Registration for the 2008 Leadership Training Institute is $50 and includes the Friday reception, Saturday breakfast and luncheon. Deadline to register is November 7.

Louisiana Women Leaders (LWL) first gathered under this banner in New Orleans in May 2004. They focused on vision, influence and power and women's dramatic impact on recent changes in the political, economic and social fabric of our state. Regional conferences soon followed in Baton Rouge, Shreveport, and Lafayette. After 2005's disastrous storms, LWL did not convene again until October 2006, this time at NichollsStateUniversity in Thibodaux, when about 300 women met to reclaim the initiative's earlier momentum. In March 2007, Louisiana Women Leaders gathered in the CapitalCity, when this electronic news service was born.
