New Orleans Mardi Gras Shooting Races For Record

Written by: Jeff Crouere

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

On Mardi Gras, there was much to celebrate in New Orleans. The weather was perfect, the crowds were awesome, and millions of dollars were pumped in to the local economy. Yet, as much as local officials try to put a positive spin on Mardi Gras 2009, it is hard to ignore the fact that this carnival was the most violent one in New Orleans history.

On Mardi Gras Day, there were 13 shootings and one murder. The violence was not limited to one area of the city; in fact, there were shootings all over New Orleans: Uptown, the French Quarter, the Hollygrove area, St. Charles Avenue, Mid-City, and New Orleans East. In addition, early Tuesday morning, a Tulane student was abducted and raped near Audubon Park, next to the most expensive homes in the city. In total, there were 14 victims, and many of them were innocent bystanders.

New Orleans has become a virtual shooting gallery. Police were all over the parade route on Mardi Gras Day, but it was not enough to prevent the onslaught of violence. The problem is that most of the shooters were felons with a long criminal history. It is a tragedy that our criminal justice is so broken that we are allowing hardened criminals back onto the streets of New Orleans with little or no jail time.

Some want to blame the violence on the prevalence of guns in New Orleans, but the real problem is not the weapon, but the criminal using the weapon. Too many of our young people have no moral values, no respect for human life. Disputes that a generation ago would have been settled with a fist fight are now settled with gunfire.

In the New Orleans area, decades of neglect have produced broken schools and decades of public assistance programs have produced broken families. Without a functioning criminal justice system and no family structure, criminals roam freely and commit crimes wherever they want. No section of the City of New Orleans is safe anymore.

While local tourism officials and politicians might want to tout the great Mardi Gras crowd, the national media is only interested in the violence. The day after Fat Tuesday, all of the networks and many national publications produced news stories highlighting the rampant violence on the streets of New Orleans. This kind of negative exposure will undoubtedly hurt our recovery and our tourism industry.

What is being done in response? Right now, some local ministers are organizing a recall campaign trying to remove U.S. Congressman Joseph Cao (R-New Orleans) from office. His crime was not stuffing cash in his freezer, but voting against a wasteful stimulus bill. A much more productive effort for local ministers would be to put all of their energies into saving the youth of New Orleans.

Ministers should be providing spiritual guidance to the youth of New Orleans. The city needs people to step forward and serve as role models and provide recreational outlets for young people. Parents need to be involved in their children’s lives, reinforce school work at home and provide the type of moral guidance that can really make a positive difference.

Instead, we see a recall effort that is a racially divisive campaign aimed at dividing this community. The crime problem could destroy this community and our signature attraction, Mardi Gras. It is an urgent issue which should be addressed with urgent action.

Where are our church leaders, community activists, tourism officials and political leaders? Most seem to be trying to sweep this problem under the rug to focus on the positives of Mardi Gras. A better response would be to squarely address this crisis, without political correctness and without flinching.

You may not be able to stop 13 yr olds from having babies, you cannot stop lenders from being greedy and making ill-advised loans, you cannot stop people from taking out ill-advised loans, but you CAN let these people face the consequences of their actions. You CAN not expect those who were not (take your pick) foolish, ignorant, greedy, stupid, uneducated, clueless, misguided, etc., etc. from having to pay for those who were foolish, ignorant, greedy, stupid, uneducated, clueless, misguided, (or whatever their malfunction may be). Unless of course, your "core constituency" consists of those who are foolish, ignorant, greedy, stupid, uneducated, clueless, misguided, then you'd want to provide a bailout, or some kind of safety net to protect themselves from .... well .... themselves. Long term, it sounds as though we'll become more foolish, ignorant, greedy, stupid, uneducated, clueless, misguided. I suspect that may not be best for our country, long term.

Well Kp, you are not going to stop 13 year olds from having babies.... It has been going on since the stone age....... And wasting time for 3 or 4 years in 'hired' er,, uhhhhhm,,, higher education so they can learn how to type, file paperwork, and speak 'legalese' and then sit around in air-conditioned comfort earning 60K a year is another delusion a lot of idiots labor under..... And trying to turn folks into atheists is about as stupid as a tact as stupid gets.... Religion, or a belief in God is the cornerstone of any civilization or society..... It is the development of the considerate conscience that is the fruit of Religion... Laws? Laws don't develop this trait as can be attested to by the vermin shooting the neighborhoods up..... One important factor missing from the American Landscape……. Lands to the west….. That is what grew this country…. Low population, and an interdependence of each other upon one another to stave off hunger, injuns, discomfort and the whims of nature….. The list goes on, but what we have are a bunch of folks sitting around with their thumbs up their asses and making things miserable for everyone else involved…..

As long as many of our citizens choose to drop out, do drugs, have children while they are still children, it really doesn't matter who the "great leader" is ... no leader can make up for too many collecting and too few paying. It's just that simple, there's no getting around it. The "people" will succeed or fail based on the choices they make, government cannot "make everything okay" - as we will be finding out in the next few years.

Glad to see that Congressman Cao causes you concern there D.Q…………………… Now if we can find someone that can replace Alexander, Landrieu, and perhaps a few others we might be getting back towards an even keel………………….. And Piyush has to go…………….. And not upward, he needs to go back to the obscurity from which he came from in the first place…….. and Cooksey? A little old……. Gawd the thought of an effective GOP member in a position of leadership scares you doesn’t it DQ????

Written by Al on 2/27/2009……………… That was a fairly racial and biased posting you made there that was devoid of any logical basis; - - - - “You guys and gals for all your little petty racist reasons continue to put down New Orleans. Maybe it makes you feel better. But let's put New Orleans aside for a second. LOUISIANA is 49th in health care, 49th in quality of life. 49th in education (and it shows in this forum). And the list goes on and on of Louisiana's dismal rankings”. - - - - You see Al, the way a state performs or ranks is a mirror image of its inhabitants and their values, morals, ethics, or beliefs… You seem to like polls, placings, percentages – etc., which of course are directly linked to demographics….. So tell us Al, demographic wise, what are the ‘racial’ population value percentages of Louisiana? Perhaps there are a lot of people out there that got some bad rap music lodged in their brains….. In other words, STUCK ON STOOPID…………………

Written by David Quidd on 2/26/2009………… Your ‘ad’ministers are morally and spiritually bankrupt………………. I thank gawd for the people in New Orleans that a man such as Joseph Cao has chosen or was inspired to take on the mission he has embarked upon………. He understands law, he is a good person, and the more I see of him on the media, the more I beging to become convinced that there actually is hope for Louisiana……. Call it a foolish human emotion, but I would have to counter that if more such as Cao got a chance at the plate it would appear not only obvious, but logical to conclude that things CAN IMPROVE………. GOD BLESS YOU CONGRESSMAN JOSEPH CAO…………….. YOU WOULD HAVE MADE ONE HELL OF A MARINE……………………

You guys and gals for all your little petty racist reasons continue to put down New Orleans. Maybe it makes you feel better. But let's put New Orleans aside for a second. LOUISIANA is 49th in health care, 49th in quality of life. 49th in education (and it shows in this forum). And the list goes on and on of Louisiana's dismal rankings. Now how could that happen in a state That has never truly had a black Governor. ALL WHITE GOVERNORS. (Pinchback aside). And practically all white mayors. And in most cities a majority white voting populist. And we have held these rankings for decades. Even in the heydays of big oil and tourism, we held on to these dismal rankings. The only real benefit of your racism , wast that while you guys were bickering over petty issues , I and many other blacks was able to pass you by economically and many other ways. And believe me it's nice to watch white folks like yourselves , just stuck in the same spot for so long. There's no way that so many black people, whose family roots came from slavery should be passing you guys by. You had every opportunity in the world that we didn't have. Yet so many of you lead such mediocre lives. And years later, you're still spewing the same ignorant venom. Spewing venom while your annual salaries have never risen above $40 or $50,000 a year. You know who you are? The ones that wasted all the opportunities that your whiteness bestowed upon you. I can see how your hatred makes you feel good. Keep it up. It's been a blessing for some of us. God Bless America! and Louisiana too,

The only time the blacks in this city want to work with the whites is when they need our tax money so that they can steal, laze around while we work, and call us racists every time someone shows they are out of line. The mayor is the biggest racist of all, but his cronies in the police, recovery and city hall are just as bad. As for the ministers. Let the sleazy devils pay some taxes or else keep out of politics. Nobody wants Jefferson the thief, except them.

New Orleans is a racist city. The mayor called for a Chocolate city, and lauded the high murder and crime rates as good branding. The ministers aparently support the criminal Jefferson and don't mind the murder and crime. The city council is devided and every time anyone tries to do anything good to get the city to work transparently, there are calls of racism, let by the mayor and supported by his black cronies on the council. This police chief is an ass and totally incompetent, and all he can do is spout platitudes while people are dying on the streets. And, the mayor is surely doing some underhand dealings while he hides from public view. Our only hope is that, once he's out of office, someone with some honesty and courage will get to his dealings and put him in jail for a long time, together with his wife for accepting the bribes of expensive lunches, paid for by the taxes taken from the few of us who work.

Lou, you're right about all blacks being lumped in together. That's because, as voters, and therefore ultimately policy makers, they all (minus maybe 10%) vote exactly the same whether they are hardworking or perpetual dependents. That racist voting mentality is what assures their continued failure and hopelessness. Their voting patterns result in only 3 possible conclusions: 1 they are ignorant, 2 they are racists, 3 they are ignorant racists.

Violent crime and the recall of Congressman Cao are unrelated issues Jeff. I am sure the ministers will work on both.

You are right on the mark Jeff. Keep up the good work! These ministers are of the same ilk as Jesse Jackson. Racially divide the community so they can be controlled. Sad state of affairs and downright criminal. The sad part is the hardworking blacks in the city are lumped in with the government dependent ones who count on these so called ministers and Jefferson to do the jobs they are supposed to do all the while stealing from those same people.

New Orleans is an outstanding example of having the majority of the populace dependent upon government. What a great success story it is! The entitlement mentality taken to a laughable, absurd, extreme. Comedy at it's finest actually.

Jeff is not the one obsessed with Jefferson. These bigoted and intolerant "ministers" are the individuals who are obsessed with Mr. Jefferson. If they preached with as much passion as they worship the Master Thief himself, Mr. Jefferson(don't know too many people who keep $90,000 in their freezer--in fact, I don't know anyone who does), they oughta be savin' souls left and right. They are politicians first and ministers a distant second. All they will ever see is race--how can one have a sagacious, intelligent, credible and profound conversation with such an intolerant race-baiting crowd? They(the "ministers")--have bee counter-productive as a force within this community, and completely divisive politically and socially. They(the "ministers") ever heard of "Thou shalt not steal"?

Jeff, Seems you can't talk about any issue without bringing up William Jefferson. Jefferson is gone. He's no longer the Congressman. He has no place in this conversation. You also can't write anything without bringing up race. You want to make this CAO recall about race. It's not. It's about blatantly failing to do the will of the people that elected him. Then you want to tell the ministers what to do. As if they should only do one thing. You're a pure lightweight with no skills.
