WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., released the following statement today in response to criticism by Louisiana GOP Chairman Roger Villere regarding comments she made in an interview Sunday with WWL-TV in New Orleans.

Sen. Landrieu said:

“I call upon Mr. Villere to stop turning into a partisan fight legitimate questions regarding the ineffective federal response to hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the catastrophic failure of federal levees that followed.  I have praised the President and members of his Administration when they have made sincere efforts to help, and I will continue to do so when they stand up for south Louisiana.  But questioning the federal government’s failures is our shared duty – politicizing them is not.  Mr. Villere is doing a disservice to our state if he believes we should defend every aspect of a failed federal response simply because the one leading it happens to be a member of his own political party.

“Like many of my constituents, I often wrestle with the question of how to help make the Gulf Coast’s recovery a greater national priority.  The President made clear his own priorities for the nation in his State of the Union Address last week.  For nearly a quarter of the speech, he spoke about the war on terror – an important priority indeed – but said not one word about the continuing recovery challenges along the Gulf Coast.  One is left to wonder what it takes to get – and stay – on the radar screen.

“The Administration and its allies also continue to dispute Louisiana’s legitimate right to parity in recovery funding by dredging up charges of corruption and incompetence.  I and many other leaders in Louisiana, Mississippi and elsewhere – Democrats and Republicans alike – have fought hard to overcome this harmful reputation that we share.  But I will not be silent as these tired, worn stereotypes are used to effectively deny the people of my state the parity in resources necessary to rebuild.”

On Monday, Villere had said in a written statement, “The State Republican Party has taken umbrage to a statement made by U.S. Senator, Mary Landrieu (D-La) who led a Congressional field hearing to discuss Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita.

“Senator Mary Landrieu’s outrageous outburst this morning in which she remarked that we ‘would have been better off if the terrorists had blown up our levees’ is the latest episode in a stream of recent Democratic blame-shifting and accusations.  Landrieu appears to be joining with Governor Blanco among the ungrateful Louisiana Democrats that seem to have forgotten the federal government has already appropriated billions and billions of dollars of aid to the state and its citizens, only to have Blanco’s Road Home Program set a new standard in bureaucratic inefficiency.  The notion that Louisiana would be better off if terrorists attacked our state should be unthinkable to an elected Senator.  Did she forget the terrorist attacks on our country a few years ago and the suffering that the people of New York and the country as a whole felt?” stated Republican Party of Louisiana Chairman, Roger Villere, Jr.

Villere ended his comments by stating “Senator Landrieu’s statement this morning is the most insensitive remark I have ever heard from a politician.  The blame game Senator Mary Landrieu and Governor Kathleen Blanco are engaged in is an impediment to our progress and an insult to our people.  Our citizens would be better off if the Democratic officials responsible for reconstructing Louisiana were more concerned with the state’s future instead of continually passing the buck.  Louisiana needs commitment, competence, and cooperation, not a string of inflammatory remarks.  This might be what the Democrats want, but the citizens of Louisiana desire and deserve leaders that will solve problems, not criticize everyone else for their own inaction”.

Governor Blanco and others criticized President Bush for not discussing Katrina during his State of the Union speech last week.  Also, the Democrats and Republicans are involved in a pitched battle for Governor of Louisina currently held by Kathleen Blanco (D-La) that might be adding to the acrimony.  Plus, there has been discussion about the efficacy of local Democratic leadership in dealing with the revival.  However, during the field hearing in New Orleans, it became obvious that Louisiana has in fact been discriminated compared to other states depending upon the amount of damage post Katrina and Rita and Congress and the administration placed a cap on the amount any one state could recover in money to assist with the recovery.

New Orleans Homeland Security Hearings: Shameful .

Why isn't Senator Landrieu, Investigating the billions of dollars Northrop Grumman Corporation received? The fact that no one seems to agree on why this company received this money ans no one seems to know who it was spent shows that not only the Republicans and Democrats can work together but the Navy, Fema. and The White House Can join in when its to help a billion dollar Corporation, that by it's own admission, either lied before or after it received the money. This is a matter of record. This Company operates no businesses in Louisiana, Although it is often Confused with Northrop Grumman Ship Systems, that operates Avondale. Senator Landrieu refuse to investigate and/or explain why and what they did with this money. Which is more than? Richard E. Tipton 504-430-8412 504-232-1651

Why is the Republican party such hypocrits? I mean, they politicize every problem that they have with our Governor but when Democrats criticize the President for his failure after Katrina, they cry foul. Villere says that we should be greatful for the federal government. Why? For giving us back some of OUR tax dollars to help us fix OUR city that THEY where responsible to protect but FAILED to do so? Should we be greatful for the slow response of the government to bring needed supplies to help the victims of the hurricane? Instead of sponsoring sites like "dontblamemeIvotedforjindal.com", how about they try working WITH the governor and try to offer her a hand NOW in fixing the problems with the Road Home program and other problems related to rebuilding after the hurricanes. Oh wait, i forgot, they would rather make the people wait for their aid so it can be given to them by a republican governor. I hope people remember this when they vote this year.

Audrey...if you really think that your Gov. Blank-o and Sen. Landgrab are brilliant why didn't do a better job of hiding their kickback deal with ICF International? You libs need to read up on this. This is taking money away from you and your "recovery". Plus...why don't you come get the deadbeats here in Texas. They are a drain.

Jackamo.....whatever,,, We Democrats...are members of the Proud Kicking "Butt" Democrat Party whose symbol is the Donkey kicking with his hind legs......... It's a shame that after "Jack" you don't have the letters: A--. which my mother never allowed me to say or write! Neither the Governor nor Landrieu is "mealey-mouthed" as Senator Vitter is. Believe you me, he won't get a free-pass either next time around. His irrational and erroneous radical right wing voting tendencies are glaring more and more. Also, Louisiana's two great ladies in office are brilliant. Get out "from under that rock". You just have to turn on national t.v. and know that it is truly "The Year of the Woman"! We women finally have someone (several) to look up to. So this is for the chauvinistic male readers: "Be ready to share the political lime light. It's our turn to "hog it"!

If they read the comment of J Pervan, Chicago, Illinois, I imagine Landrieu and Blanco would think many people are illiterate and stupid. For the bureaucratic requirements imposed upon the program by the federal government have created the morass about which you and the other poster are complaining. The other poster is not a Democrat. Using Vitter's term "debacle," he is merely repeating what Vitter wrote in his press release. By the way, Vitter misused the word "debacle." Before repeating Vitter's words, perhaps you should look them up in a dictionary. Again, if someone were to read the comments of these Republicans, one would assume they were illiterate and stupid.

So let me get this straight. Your esteemed Democractic senator and your esteemed Democratic governor are blaming Republicans for not getting aid to people rebuilding fast enough? Maybe Gov Blanco and Sen. Landrieu can explain how a politically connected company named ICF International was awarded a huge 756 million dollar contract to prcess rebuilding claims and has managed 391 grants out of 103,000 appliants? Who hired ICF International? Was it the head of the La. Republican Party? Was in FEMA? Was it President Bush? No, it was Gov. Blanco who continues to pass the buck for her own incompetanced in this whole tragedy. Does Gov. Blanco and Sen. Landrieu beleive people can't read, or do they believe that everyone is just dumb.

The name game now seems to be an off shoot of an old familiar political game.Have we gotten the short end here in South Louisiana? You bet we have and trying to shift blame from the Blanco administration to the White House or the Republican Party is no solution to the problem. If anyone thinks that LRA is working all you need to do is look at the numbers-that is a Blanco debacle.I have no faith in the administration of this state and slightly less for the federal government to do what is right. A Katrina Victim and Democrat

jackamo330's comment is so illustrative. indeed, it contains the coded language of the Republican Southern Strategy. The Landrieus, he says, are responsible for the "downward spiral" of New Orleans. But what he really wants to say is the following: "The Landrieus integrated New Orleans City Government, giving African-Americans rights. The Landrieus are a Civil Rights family, and we racist whites will have none of it. Do not vote for the Landrieus, or your white daughter will have an African-American husband." It is the Southern Strategy at its best: coded racist language that panders to the worse instincts of voters.

He said she said will not work. The Republicans have defeated themselves and we are appreciative as we likely would have had a tougher battle to win the 2008 Presidency. They have done that for us with mismanagement, debt, war and avoiding responsibilities of coming to the aid of Katrina and Rita victims in a timely manner. There are good people in all political parties but it is time for a change. Anything has to be an improvement.

Landrieu has never been the brightest lamp on the tree. Her statements are characteristic of someone who is now desperate politically since Katrina washed away the majority of her hardcore constituents. She realizes that the repudiation of her brother for mayor was just the first step in sending what remains of the Landrieu clan, who in tandem set this city on its downward spiral beginning in 1968 with her father, out to pasture.

Mr. Villere and his Radical Right Wing Republican'ts are so jealous of any credit and/or recognition that Senator Landrieu gets for her hard work. Get used to it, Roger, it's just the beginning..... Someone from your political party posted a comment in the Washington Post this week giving Jindal credit for passing the bill giving Louisiana the recent "off shore oil royalty bonanza"!!! Don't you know, Roger...people don't believe everything they read anymore, especially when fabricated by Republicans. Go, Mary Go! We Love You, and we are with you all the way! The same is true for our hard-working Governor, too.
