The Louisiana Commissioner of Higher Education, Joseph Savoie, sent a message concerning the shooting deaths of two women at the Louisiana technical College.

Savoie said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims of today’s tragic events at the Louisiana Technical College in Baton Rouge

I have spoken with Dr. May, President of the Louisiana and Community Technical College System, who responded quickly to the incident.  I commend the faculty and staff of the technical college who acted swiftly and appropriately in order to protect other students and staff from harm.  All of us in higher education stand committed to the safety of all Louisiana students.

On Friday, a nursing student shot the two women to death and then killed herself at the Louisiana Technical College in Baton Rouge.  The identities of the three women have not yet been released.

Law enforcement officials have not determined a motive behind the shooting.

According to the Morning Advocate 2-3 years ago since Louisiana has enacted Concealed Handgun Permits, only 2 non-violent minor crimes have ever beeen committed by license holders. Anyone who holds such a license in Louisiana goes through a detailed background check and must take a State Police approved qualifying course. Allowing license holders on campuses(they must be at least age 21) will allow innocent people the chance to defend themselves if a nut should surface to do harm. Criminals are the problem, not permit holders, at least in Louisiana.

I would feel less threatened by gun banners if they were not - for the most part - also soft on violent criminals. Although there are 10 - 12 thousand gun deaths in this country each year there are also 15 - 17 thousand alcohol related traffic fatalities as well each year. I guess if you do not condone alcohol consumption you see alcohol only in a negative light. Similarly, I wish we lived in a world where I would see no need to arm myself against my fellow man, unfortunately - having worked late night retail and also delivered goods to the projects in our fair city - I know that being armed can keep one alive. There are people who prey upon the peaceful amongst us, if there are two, three or more who wish one harm, having a handgun in your pocket is the ONLY way to get out of this situation - without having to rely on mercy from potentially merciless individuals.

Too many guns in the hands of people who should not have a toothpick, much less a gun. Why is our government so slow to stop the carnage that is occurring everywhere in our country? Never mind about the second amendment; this amendment is killing us. Was that the intent of our forefathers? I doubt it.
