Darling friends,
Post your events on Bayoubuzz’s free state-wide calendar of events or see what is happening. The page receives approximately 1000 visits per day.
This weekend we are going to have great fun events that will include : The Italian American St. Joseph Parade through the French Quarter; The Blue Dog Art Events to coincide with the exhibit at NOMA of the Rodrigue Retrospective Exhibit, The "Guess Who is Coming to Dinner" at the Audubon Tea Room, the Oak Alley Arts and Crafts Festival in Vacherie; The Ecole Francaise Vive Le Arts Festival; The Legacy Donor Foundation's Soul Revival at Harrah's; the eagerly anticipated CAC's SweetArts 2008, the Faberge Egg Hunt at NOMA , the Sunday Afternoon Concert at City Park, the Nickel-A-Dance at Ray Boom Boom Room and many more events.
Just when I thought we might get a break from all the sad news we've been getting lately, I get word about the passing of yet another French Quarter icon: longtime restaurateur and gourmet Italian chef Tony Moran. He passed away at Ochsner Clinic on March 5 at the age of 84. Founder and former owner of Tony Moran's Restaurant and the Old Absinthe House in the 200 block of Bourbon Street, he is credited with introducing Fettucine Alfredo to this country among other culinary innovations. He was friends with celebrities, sports stars, well-known political figures and, indeed, everyone who met him. The walls of his restaurants were filled with signed pictures of famous people who dined there. Before opening his own namesake restaurant, he owned La Louisiane on Iberville Street. He learned the food service business from his legendary father, Diamond Jimmy Moran, and was in the business for more than 60 years. I have dined, myself, at his restaurants and I can vouch for the fact that the food was super delicious. He will be missed very much, and my condolences go out to his widow, Jeanette, his two daughters and the many others who knew and loved him.
Funeral services for Mr. Moran will be Saturday, March 8, at 8 a.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Cemetery. The public is invited. and don't forget that on Saturday as well, the Johnny Gordon funeral mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 411 North Rampart Street, at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, March 8. This will be followed by a jazz funeral from the church to Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop at the corner of Bourbon and St. Philip streets.
More sad news, though, fortunately, not about someone passing away this time. But it is a passing of sorts, anyway: the end of an era. Claire Hartley Grogan, the vivacious and very popular proprietor/bartender at Claire's on Conti, will be closing her doors next Tuesday, March 13. After five years at the helm of her namesake bar in the St. Ann Marie Antoinette Hotel, she is calling it quits to spend more time with her husband Mike and their Pomeranian, Noel. On Sunday, March 9, at 6 p.m., Claire is having a Farewell Party for her many friends and customers at the bar, 717 Conti Street. In recent years Claire has worked at the Touche bar in the Omni Royal Orleans, Muriel's, and Gennifer Flowers' Club before opening her own place. Over the past five years she has hosted some very memorable events at her place, including her own wedding in August 2005 and, most recently, a memorial send-off party for the late Verita Thompson last month. Good luck, Claire. We will miss you but I'm sure we'll be seeing you around the Quarter.
On Friday, you can begin your weekend with neighbors and friends by sipping into sunset on beautiful Bayou St. John by attending Vino on the Bayou, Friday, March 7, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Pitot House Museum,1440 Moss Street, on Bayou St. John. $10 per person, $5 for Landmarks members. When a stripper named Pippi moves into Armadillo Acres, on the run from a permanent-marker-sniffing loon named Duke, she gets sympathy from the park's ruling clique, Betty, a bleached-blond Eartha Kitt with mighty lungs, Linoleum, and Pickles, until she steals somebody's husband.

Come join us for the Clean House. Our houses, like our relationships, are never as clean as we want them to be. Sometimes, you need to just embrace the dirt and let a good joke clean your insides out. Lane just wants her house cleaned, but her Brazilian maid Matilde would rather write jokes. When Lane's neatnik sister Virginia starts cleaning the house on the sly all seems resolved. Then Lane's husband leaves her…for an older woman. Wildly theatrical and intensely poetic, THE CLEAN HOUSE is a magical play about fighting the dirt in your life, finding true love at any age, and the quest for the perfect joke.

The Contemporary Arts Center and Regions Bank present SweetArts 2008 - "Paper Scissors RockStar - An Arts & Sass Playground," and are proud to welcome the annual benefit party back home to the CAC in New Orleans, after 2 post-Katrina years in New York. Admission to the event includes complimentary cocktails and cuisine by 7 on Fulton, 360 Vodka, Bonterra Vineyards, Coolbrew Coffee, Cochon, Food Art, Herbsaint, K-Paul's, New Orleans Ice Cream Co., Republic Beverage, and Palate. Partygoers will enjoy the ultimate "arts & sass playground" of interactive fun, including performing in front of cameras with your own rock band, drinking chilled cocktails served from a massive ice luge, creating your own artworks and dancing to the sounds of sultry cabaret siren Anais St. John (Honorees' Reception) and jazz trombone virtuoso Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews with his band Orleans Avenue, who will perform their energetic mix of funk, rock and hip hop. In addition to "rock star fabulous" fun, the purpose behind the party is to celebrate and recognize this year's SweetArts Honorees, six foundations whose unprecedented funding initiatives in response to Hurricane Katrina have helped the CAC and so many other Gulf Coast institutions to recover. They are the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc.; the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation; the Getty Foundation; the Joan Mitchell Foundation; the Lord and Taylor/2007 SweetArts Katrina Fund; and the Louisiana Cultural Economy Foundation.
