FBI Bernazzani, New Orleans Saga: In Balance

During his tenure as the FBI Special Agent in Charge of the New Orleans Field Office, James Bernazzani was extremely successful. He led the office capably and helped bring to justice scores of criminals. Bernazzani also helped clean up the corrupt political environment here in New Orleans.

Therefore, it is not surprising that local business leaders approached Bernazzani and asked him to run for Mayor in 2010. Due to his interest in the community and public service, Bernazzani not only entertained the notion, but also talked about it publicly.

Once that was disclosed, it did not take long for him to be reassigned to the Washington D.C. office. His FBI superiors obviously did not appreciate Bernazzani’s political ambitions being made public, especially during a time he was leading the investigation of local politicians. The FBI clearly did not want to be accused of a conflict of interest.

Despite the shocking announcement, Bernazzani may stay in New Orleans and run for Mayor. His supporters in the business community may entice Bernazzani to remain in New Orleans to pursue his political ambitions.

Hopefully, Bernazzani will stay here and contribute to the rebuilding of New Orleans. He is a remarkably talented individual who has the organizational skills that can revamp City Hall. New Orleans also has serious crime and corruption problems and Bernazzani can deal with those issues better than anyone.

Regardless of what happens, all citizens of New Orleans should feel grateful for the time that Bernazzani spent in this community as he made this city safer. Without question, Bernazzani would make an interesting candidate for Mayor. The next election is the most important one in the history of New Orleans. With all of the problems that are facing this city, it is imperative that the next Mayor be a strong leader who can deal with a multitude of serious issues. If Bernazzani does not run, hopefully, another strong leader will emerge to steer this city forward and recover from the damage done during the Nagin era.
