Darling readers,
It is great to be back in my beloved New Orleans after spending two wonderful weeks exploring the land of the pharaohs and the exciting London’s cuisine and bar scene. As I was leaving London, I noticed that it was the beginning of the Chelsea Flower Show and the fashionable stores were featuring the new chapeaus for the Ascot Race. As my traveling companion Patti Nickell always says "If I have one more day."
As I started to put together the calendar of fun events, I am horrified to notice that many of them, especially on Wednesday and Thursday, are occurring at the same time. Once again, I wish I had a clone to allow me to attend all the fabulous events that I have been invited to and would like to attend, but I only have one me.
Even though I am jet-lagging, I started my week by attending the monthly meeting of the French Quarter Business Women’s network at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co, 429 Decatur Street Tuesday, May 20. Guest speaker was Kimberly Wooten Rosenberg, Vice-chair, Board of Commissioners of the French Quarter-Marigny Historic Area Management District.
I also did not missed the Krewe of Boo's meeting at Blaine Kern's Mardi Gras World.; Mr Mardi Gras himself gave us a sneak preview of the wonderful floats that will be parading down St Charles Avenue on Halloween Day, Friday, October 31 As you probably know, I am a Lieutenant for this new krewe and if any of you would like to join me just send me an e-mail. It is going to be a lot of fun. .
I am looking forward to hosting this Wednesday, my monthly Round Table Luncheon at noon at Begue’s of the Royal Sonesta Hotel. My featured guests speakers are Julie Condy, Executive Director/Founder of Stage to Stage, Inc, home of the Crescent City Lights Youth Theater; and Ann Rogers Tuennerman, Founder of Tales of the Cocktail, The Most Spirited Event of the Summer: July 16-20. Networking at 11:30 a.m., Luncheon at Noon. Luncheon is $32, all-inclusive, including wine and complimentary parking. For reservations call Noel Scallan at 504-553-2220 or email nscallan@royalsonestano.com Ann will be introducing the official cocktail for this year’s tale of Cocktail.
This Wednesday will the beginning of the 2008 New Orleans Wine & Food Experience. You can begin your New Orleans Wine and Food Experience at one of New Orleans’ premier restaurants, where Winery Principals, often the winemakers, are present to share their wines with each course. Chefs and Vintners plan the menus together, ensuring outstanding food and wine pairings. The cost of each dinner is $85 - $125 inclusive per person. Many of the dinners are sold out but I listed in the calendar, the restaurants that are still available.
More than 175 wineries from around the world and 75 of New Orleans’ best restaurants will showcase their offerings at a Five-Day Feast for All of the Senses! You can access the information on which restaurants are participating at www.nowfe.com/html/vintner_dinners.html .
That same evening, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is hosting its monthly network meeting at Tomatillo’s, corner of Frenchmen Street and Esplanade from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
On Wednesday at the Lobby Bar of the J.W. Marriott, 614 Canal Street, you can experience an evening of cultural indulgences from 5:30-8 p.m. The local gallery will be MON COEUR GALLERY presenting Artwork by Marriane Antoine and Jewelry by Janet Bruno-Small. Entertainment by multitalented Brazil-born Riccardo Crespo, singer and songwriter who plays acoustic guitar and harmonica. As always, complimentary wine tasting and hors d'oeuvres.
YLC’s “Wednesday at the Square” at Lafayette Square, across from Gallier Hall, is presenting from 5-7:30 p.m. Dash Rip Rock + Paul Sanchez & the Rolling Road Show.
Partysist, 100 Old Metairie Road, is holding an exciting event on Wednesday, May 21 from 5-7 p.m. The event is an Absinthe and Art night. The event will feature a free Absinthe tasting paired with artwork of local artist Layla Messkoub that creates original and innovative prints from handcut woodblocks.
On Thursday, May 22, New Orleans' Latin sensation, Fredy Omar, will perform from 6-8 p.m. at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art's “Ogden After Hours.” His special guests will be six of the best Latin salsa dancers in the City of New Orleans. Fredy can be credited for reviving the New Orleans salsa scene since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated most of the coastal area and sent hundreds of thousands of New Orleanians to seek shelter in other cities. Among those who fled were many Latin music enthusiasts who enjoyed salsa music. Fredy came back to New Orleans after a few months and we’re glad to have him back.
That evening my darling friends Colombian artists, Gustavo Duque and Matilde Alberny are inviting you to a Cocktail for the Book Presentation and Signing by Jairo Alvarez Botero, author of No Such Thing as Impossible From Adversity to Triumph – 6-8 p.m. at the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel, Gallery Room, 500 Canal St. Dr. Maria M. Londoño, General Consul of Colombia will be present.
I am going to be very busy that evening because the Royal Street Experience as part of the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience is going to be taking place all along Royal Street. The list of galleries participating is listed in the Calendar or you can visit www.nowfe.com
Royal Street Stroll Sponsored by ROUSES is on Thursday, May 22, 5:30-8:30 p.m., 400 Royal Street. $75 in advance, $90 on-site. You can also purchase tickets the day of the event at the 300 Block of Royal St. A definitive evening event of the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience, which brings together New Orleans' greatest gifts: rare antiques, fine art, live jazz and stunning historic architecture with the world's outstanding wines. Shop the enchanting galleries of Royal Street while experiencing wine offerings at each stop, as live jazz music fills the air. As always, we will be joined by the Krewe of Cork with 2008 Grand Marshal, Kix Brooks of Brooks & Dunn, as they parade down Royal Street. This event traditionally sells out. Purchase your tickets in advance to assure attendance. Must be 21 to enter. You must have a 2008 Wine Glass & Wristband to receive wine & food offerings.
Be on the look-out for the beautiful costumes of the members of the Krewe of Cork that annually parade along Royal Street.
On Friday, the Obituary Cocktail Society, at my suggestion, will be gathering at the Lobby of the Renaissance® Arts Hotel Lounge Bar,700 Tchoupitoulas Street, where mixologist extraordinaire, Chris McMillan, is holding court. As always it is from 6-7 p.m. Call 613-2330.
Wine -lovers like me are mourning the loss of talented and autocratic vintner Robert Mondavi. The London Times carried a very informative obituary on Monday, May 19. I had the fortune of meeting him and his lovely wife Margrit at one of those lovely vintner dinners and even flew to New York for his 80th Birthday party hosted by chef Julia Child. Time flies! I will drink a glass of wine in his name at one of the Grand Tasting taking place this Friday( 5- 8p.m.) and Saturday(1- 4p.m.) at the Louisiana Superdome.
The Tastings are a truly "Grand" experience for both foodies and wine connoisseurs, pairing extensive offerings from New Orleans' finest chefs and selections of wines from around the world. 75 Chefs and 1,000 Vintages are accompanied by some of Louisiana’s best musicians, décor that showcases the local flavor, and new, exciting festivities.
The 35th Annual Greek Festival New Orleans takes place at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Robert E. Lee Drive at Bayou St. John, Friday, May 23 through Sunday, May 25. $5 Admission Fee. Come out and "Experience Greece on the Bayou," the annual Hellenic party with uniquely New Orleans flair! Tireless volunteers have been hard at work in preparation of old favorites and new additions! Delicious food, delightful drinks, and entertainment the entire family will enjoy.
On May 23 and 24 at 8 p.m., the New Orleans Ballet Theatre Spring Series is presenting Balanchine's “Agon” pas de deux and Julia Adams’ “If a Rose Falls...” at NOCCA/ Riverfront Lupin Hall. For reservation call 504-528-3800.
The Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo is taking place this Friday, May 23 through Saturday, May 24. This is a free multicultural festival held annually along the banks of historic Bayou St. John between Jefferson Davis Parkway and Orleans Avenue. The event features local food, music, and artisans from Louisiana. Proceeds from the festival benefit the MotherShip Foundation's efforts in New Orleans. Friday, May 23 at 5 p.m. and Saturday, May 24 at 10 a.m.

The Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board presents the Louisiana Seafood Cook-Off (LASCO) on May 24, showcasing Louisiana chefs preparing Louisiana seafood and competing for the title of King or Queen of Louisiana Seafood. The Cook-Off is concurrent with the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience in the New Orleans Superdome. For more information, visit www.LouisianaSeafood.com/CookOff. Twelve of Louisiana’s most talented chefs who represent a variety of culinary establishments will gather for the competition on Saturday, May 24 at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans as part of the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience (NOWFE) Grand Tasting.
The battle begins late morning and at 1 p.m., when the doors open to NOWFE attendees, things are really going to heat up. Each chef has up to one hour to stir, sizzle and sauté their Louisiana seafood dish, then at 3:30 p.m., after the judges have tasted and tallied, one lucky chef will be crowned King or Queen of Louisiana Seafood. “By creating fabulous cuisine using Louisiana seafood as the main ingredient, these chefs are serving as ambassadors for the Louisiana seafood community,” said Ewell Smith, executive director of LSPMB. “The chef who is named King or Queen will be receiving an incredible honor.”

The New Orleans Museum of Art has initiated new evening hours one day a week. The Museum is now open every Wednesday from Noon until 8:00 pm. The adjacent Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden will be open from 10:00 am until 8:00 pm on Wednesdays as well. The Museum and Garden also are open Thursday through Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
The purpose of the extended hours is not only to make the Museum available in the evening for students and those who work during the day but to help to promote the many fine restaurants, both old and new, in the MidCity area. So after touring the Museum, visitors are encouraged to have dinner at an area restaurant. A list of MidCity participating restaurants will be available at the Museum.
Besides viewing its permanent collections and special exhibitions, NOMA is planning additional activities for visitors on Wednesday nights, including films, music and refreshments.
During the Rodrigue Exhibition, through June 6, admission is $5.00 for Louisiana resident adults and $10 for non-resident adults.. Visitors under 18 years are admitted free courtesy of The Helis Foundation. Museum Members are free at all times.

Ogden After Hours
Freddy Omar
Fredy Omar was born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras on April 15, 1970. From the age of eight, he worked in his grandfather's bakery before and after school. It was there, as he mixed and shaped the dough while singing along with the radio, that he dreamed of becoming a singer. By the age of twenty-two, Fredy had played all the major venues in Honduras and toured El Salvador as a soloist. When the opportunity to perform at a festival in New Orleans arose, he jumped on it. Fascinated by the musical diversity he found there and inspired by the freshness he felt in his discovery of un-familiar music styles, he decided to stay in New Orleans. In 1997, he was invited to showcase at a local music conference and this lead to the formation of Fredy Omar con su Banda. Perhaps because of the variety of rhythms (Latin jazz, merengue, salsa, cumbia, mambo, cha cha cha, bolero, and tango) the band enjoyed instant success and within months released their eponymous CD, recor ded live at Tipitinas.
Ogden After Hours is every Thursday, 6 p.m. To 8 p.m., at the museum. Free to Ogden Museum members; $10 for nonmembers.
