Kennedy's Children: One generation, removed.

Four Humours is proud to announce its official first production, a revival of Robert Patrick's Obie-winning classic, Kennedy's Chidren. The comedy-drama is directed by Michael Martin, and features Paul Atreides, Bridget Erin, Carrie Anne Rose, Michael Aaron Santos, and Kathryn Talbot.

On Valentine's Day, 1974, there's gathered in a Lower East Side bar five strangers --a Vietnam vet, a would-be sex goddess, a radical activist, an off-Broadway actor, and a JFK-obsessed schoolteacher-- each to recount the course of their lives during the tumultuous '60s, the passions and mistakes that led them, individually and collectively, into an emptier decade that could never match what they had to leave behind. These lost souls don't address each other, not directly, yet have everything in the world to say to each other. And to an audience: Any play that examines its own time with such fearless specificity becomes universal.

What: Kennedy's Children
Who: Written by Robert Patrick; directed by Michael Martin for Four Humours.

May 25-27, Fri, Sat 8 PM, Sun 6 PM
Call 504-218-8559 for info/reservations  $20/ $15 students.

Nighthawks, a two-act play by Evan Guilford-Blake, is the winning entrant in the Saints and Sinners Literary Festival's Playwrighting Competition. It was inspired by Edward Hopper's famous 1942 painting by the same name of an all-night diner.

The first act, set in 1943, begins with a couple in the diner: Gil is trying to convince Donna to go home with him -- his wife is out of town. War vet Wray enters, suffering from an incident that destroyed his Negro Leagues career, adding tension that Jimmy, the counterman, cannot control. The play explores the loneliness of wartime America, how the war built some hopes and destroyed others; and the conflicts that grew out of the racial divisiveness during the time.

The second act occurs 40 years later. The play centers around the interactions of four new characters: Rhonda, a prostitute who was rescued by Mackie, a disenchanted Vietnam vet who became her protector and pimp; Galen, a troubled actor; and Jamie, the counterman and a former actor. The themes of the painting -- loneliness, the need for contact and the sleepless isolation of the "nighthawks" of American society -- are explored throughout.
The play features the acting talents of Tim Bellow, Lisa Davis, Derrick Deal, Carlos Gonzalez, Don McCoy, Keith Launey and Mandi Turner.  Directed by Glenn Meche.

Help Bring the music back!

Come join the New Orleans String Project (NOSP)

12pm-5pm

Saturday May 26

Burke Park

Annunciation and 2nd Street

3rd Annual Crawfish Boil.

This exciting fundraiser will feature live music performed by the children with something
for everyone's taste from classical to jazz.  This fun family event will include games and arts and crafts for children of all ages.  Come take a chance on some of the great items that will be raffled off during the festival.  This of course would not be a New Orleans festival if it did not feature great food for all to partake.  All the proceeds from the Crawfish Boil will help continue NOPS commitment of providing music lessons to children.  "Now more than ever we are dedicated to giving quality music instruction to the youth of this community,"

Jeanne Jaubert
 Executive Director of NOSP.

The mission of the New Orleans String Project, a non-profit organization, is to enrich the lives of youth in our community by making string instrument instruction accessible to inner-city New Orleans children.  Due to hurricane Katrina there are not any New Orleans public schools that have string programs. The New Orleans String Project is trying to fill in that gap by providing lessons and instruments to children in the community.  NOSP offers after-school violin, viola, cello and bass lessons to kids ages 6-14 free of charge.

Join us as we bring the music back to the children of New Orleans on Saturday May 26 at Burke Park on Annunciation and 2nd Street.  This fantastic crawfish fest has free admission and it is open to the public.

See you there!

Reading With Rover at New Orleans Public Library Starts Saturday,
May 26
NEW ORLEANS PUBLIC LIBRARY
504-596.2588
kwilkins@gno.lib.la.us

Ava is very gentle.  She is a nine year-old retired racing greyhound.  Don't  think that Ava sits on a porch all day.  Ava still works.  She is a trained therapy dog with a special skill.  She teaches children to read-with
confidence.

The New Orleans Public Library is glad to announce that Reading with Rover is back on the Library's schedule.  Reading with Rover is a program that has spread across the country since 1999.   Many children are reluctant to read aloud, but with the approval of a gentle canine companion, they gain the needed practice and make improvements in reading skills.  The program provides gentle encouragement on a regular basis.

Every Saturday morning at 10:30, Ava will be available for children to practice their reading aloud.  Ava will be in the Children's Room on the second floor of the library, making friends and reinforcing skills.  Ava will come with her owner, Susan Drongowski, who will assist children in  starting.  Ava was a regular Reading with Rover dog at the Summerlin Library in Nevada, before her owners re-located to New Orleans.

For further information on Reading with Rover, call 596-2588.

Jefferson Parish Library presents an informal talk and dance exhibition by Christina Vella and Steven Gurley on Saturday, May 26, 2:00PM at East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon Avenue, Metairie.

Since its origin in the slums of Buenos Aires around 1900, Argentine Tango has become known throughout the world for its elegance and inventiveness. Christina and Steve will demonstrate the sensuous tango, the graceful tango waltz, and the lighthearted milonga, as they describe the development of the dances; they will also show the difference between Argentine and American tango.

After the presentation, there will be a free lesson for interested beginners. Kids are welcome with adults.  It will all take place in the lobby of the administrative wing ----right inside the farthest door on the right as you face the library.

Historian Christina Vella (author of Intimate Enemies and Indecent Secrets) has appeared several times at the library's lecture series, but always standing more or less still. Tango has been her favorite dance for some years, though she rarely gets to talk about it. Since Steven
Gurley took up tango three years ago, he dances whenever he can get away from work (at Hunt Engine Company).   Both Christina and Steve are students of Maria Elena LaMotta.

For information about "Two to Tango at Two" and information about other Jefferson Parish Library programs, activities, and exhibits, see the Library's website at http://www.jefferson.lib.la.us <http://www.jefferson.lib.la.us/>  or call

TREASURES FROM FRANCE TO BE EXHIBITED AT THE HISTORIC NEW HISTORY COLLECTION -LAST WEEK

Four Hundred Years of French Presence in Louisiana: Treasures from the National Library of France is presented as a gift to the people of New Orleans in affirmation of France’s commitment to the preservation of New Orleans culture in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.  The exhibition, on display through June 2, 2007, is free and open to the public, Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m., in the History Galleries at 533 Royal Street

The first exhibition to focus exclusively on the National Library’s extensive collections relating to Louisiana, Four Hundred Years of French Presence in Louisiana explores the strong cultural ties between France and its former colony, from the 17th through the 20th century.  Items from 13 of the National Library’s divisions, many of them never exhibited before, are complemented by a selection of artifacts from The Historic New Orleans Collection, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Center of Diplomatic Archives in Nantes, France.

Opening with the era of exploration, Four Hundred Years of French Presence in
Louisiana presents a range of objects—from early drawings of Louisiana wildlife, to medals depicting Louisiana worn by members of the French royal family, to manuscript maps, rare books, and plans for New Orleans. Of particular interest are Guillaume Levasseur’s 1601 “Carte de l’océan Atlantique”; a manuscript account of the 1725 visit of Indian chiefs from the Michigamea, Missouri, Osage, and Oto nations to Paris; and Benjamin Dumont de Montigny’s 1744 views of the Gulf Coast.  Moving into the post-colonial era and beyond, the exhibition surveys the cultural exchange between France and Louisiana.  Nineteenth-century artists such as Frédéric Chopin, Ernest Guiraud, Alfred Mercier and Victor Séjour are featured, as are 20th-century jazzmen.  Highlights of this section include playwright Séjour’s La Mulâtre, the first published short story by an African American; a photogra ph of Sidney Bechet taken during his performance in “La Revue Nègre”; and programs from the French premiere of Tennessee Williams’s A Streetcar Named Desire.

Four Hundred Years of French Presence in Louisiana also showcases another gift from the Minister of Culture and Communication of France—a model of the 1915 French Quarter by French engineers Pierre Atlan and Pierre Merlin.  On display in The Louisiana Supreme Court Museum, 400 Royal Street, the model was presented to The Historic New Orleans Collection for the benefit of the people of New Orleans.

Four Hundred Years of French Presence in Louisiana coincides with Femme, femme, femme: Paintings of Women in French Society from Daumier to Picasso from the Museums of France on view at the New Orleans Museum of Art.  Together, the exhibitions will turn spring in New Orleans into a fête of the city’s French Heritage.

The Historic New Orleans Collection gratefully acknowledges Freeport-McMoRan Foundation for their support of Four Hundred Years of French Presence in Louisiana.

In an era when most combat boats and ships were made of steel, wooden combat vessels represented something of a design regression. However, these crafts were built of wood to serve specific and important purposes and would prove invaluable to the Allied victory. The National World War II Museum explores the story behind these engineering anomalies with the special exhibition, Boats of Wood, Men of Steel: Wooden Combat Vessels in WWII. The exhibit, drawing on Museum collections as well as artifacts loaned from select individuals, will be on display through May 20, 2007.
