The 25th Anniversary celebration of the French Quarter Festival turned out just the way it was planned: Spectacular! Mother Nature provided us with a perfect weekend to the delight of the fun-loving participants. I enjoyed very much attending the TGIF party on Thursday at the Natchez and celebrating with my darling friend Robert Hanley and his guests his birthday. Energetic Rockin' Dopsie Jr. with guest artist Amanda Shaw was a real treat.
On Friday, I participated in the historical parade after attending the unveiling of the elegant sculpture of talented musician and entertainer Ronnie Kole at the LegendsPark in the 300 block of Bourbon Street. Ronnie's sculpture joined the life-size sculptures of Al Hirt, Pete Fountain, Chris Owens and Fats Domino. Beverly Hirt (Al’s widow), Pete Fountain and Chris Owens were present among the guests at the unveiling. Next year, the sculpture of Irma Thomas will be unveiled, and in 2010 it will be Allen Toussaint. The food, the music and the setting made the 25th Anniversary Celebration of the French Quarter Festival a very special one indeed.
I am sorry I missed so many parties on Saturday, including the elegant Opera Ball, but I really wanted to be present for the Vagina Monologues at the New Orleans Arena. I got to see wonderful performances of among others, our talented Charmaine Neville, the Rev. Lois Dejan and her Gospel Choir and international stars such as Jane Fonda, Doris Robert, Jennifer Hudson and many more. I had so much fun!
This week in between festivals is going to be very special as well.

Before I go I want to ask everyone to say a prayer for a complete recovery for Earl Turner who recently had a medical emergency on a flight from Las Vegas to Miami. During the four-hour plane right he developed pulmonary thrombosis – blood clots in his lungs. Fortunately he was rushed to the hospital in time and the doctors attending him were confident he could be flown back home to Las Vegas the day after the incident. Most of you, I’m sure, remember Earl as the wonderful entertainer who had regular nightly shows in Harrah’s Casino Theater until Hurricane Katrina forced the casino to cancel his contract. He moved back to Vegas but returned to Harrah’s for a month last summer, stirring hopes among many of his fans that he might return for good. He and his wife Christine are lovely people and I wish them all the best during Earl’s recovery. We hope to see them again in New Orleans as soon as possible.
Pulmonary thrombosis, according to medical specialists, can occur on long flights when passengers remain seated too long. If any of you plan on taking a long plane trip, keep in mind that it’s a good idea to get up and walk around on the plane and keep your circulation moving. Don’t stay in one place or position for more than two hours at a time.
Have a great week and don't forget I am a Realtor with Latter& Blum Inc. and I can help you with all your Real Estate needs. Just call me at 504-495-9181 or email me at margaritabertgen@hotmail.com

Celebrating Jazz Month and Jazz Fest 2008...
THE ART OF JAZZ
A Traveling Exhibit of the LouisianaStateMuseum
Exhibit Showcases Artistic Impressions of Jazz
From the moment jazz burst onto the international cultural scene around 1920, visual artists were inspired by the exuberance, power, and emotion of this uniquely American music form.
A traveling exhibition by the LouisianaStateMuseum illustrates the many ways jazz has been interpreted by artists over the past century. Entitled THE ART OF JAZZ, the exhibition will be on view at East Bank Regional Library from April 15 to May 15, 2008, in the Main Hall during library hours.
Comprised of over 40 colorful photographic reproductions from the StateMuseum's
extensive jazz collection and other sources, THE ART OF JAZZ features portraits, paintings, posters, and photographs arranged in six thematic sections. Images in the first section, "Impressions of Jazz," illustrate how artists sought to depict the feelings the music aroused
in them. Seeing jazz as a parallel to new, totally abstract styles in art, many artists tried to bring the two together. One example of this is an unusual image entitled "Jazz" by Louisiana artist Caroline Durieux. Using the "electron" printmaking technique she developed in the early 1950's, whereby designs are created in radioactive inks and dyes and transferred to photographic paper, Durieux explored the more abstract areas of her art with the music as inspiration.

Presented by New Orleans Friends of Music
Over the last eighteen years, the Grammy-nominated St.Lawrence String Quartet has established itself among the world-class chamber ensembles. Having been privileged to study with the Emerson, Tokyo and Juilliard String Quartets, the members of the St. Lawrence are themselves passionate educators. Since 1998 the Quartet has held the position of Ensemble in Residence at StanfordUniversity. The summer of 2007 will mark its 14th year as Resident Quartet to the Spoleto USA Festival in Charleston, SC. The group continues to build on its reputation for imaginative, spontaneous music making that the Washington Post calls "emotionally high charged but never out of control."

Lobby Atrium of The Ogden Museum of Southern Art's Stephen Goldring Hall
Connie Jones and Tom McDermott
Tom McDermott: New Orleans is a city with a rich musical heritage, and Tom McDermott is a pianist who has mastered many of its styles.
In 1984, McDermott moved to New Orleans, lured there by a job at the World's Fair as well as a passionate interest in the music of CrescentCity pianists like James Booker, Professor Longhair and Dr. John. He quickly found steady work, first as a solo pianist and later with jazz bands
Connie Jones:Cornetist Connie Jones is a native New Orleanian. Considered a prodigy, he began studying piano at five and was playing trumpet in his school band by ten. By the time Connie was eighteen, he was working on Bourbon Street with the "Basin Street Six."
In recent years, Jones has recorded with many New Orleans artists as well as joining Jim Beebe's Chicago Jazz Band on three separate CDs. Connie has become, over the years, the chosen New Orleans cornetist for many recordings and public performances.
Ogden After Hours is every Thursday, 6 p.m. To 8 p.m., at the museum. Free
