This past weekend I was like the EverReady battery’s bunny … going and going and going!
It was so much fun. As I mentioned in my last column, I was looking forward to the Overture to the Cultural Season Gala and it was just wonderful. The annual fundraiser was held at the New Orleans Museum of Art co-chaired by Lanier Hotsford and Townsend Jordan; patron party chair Hon. Jacquelyn B. Clarkson; honorary chairman Michael Brown, President and CEO of First Bank and Trust; and Eric Martinez, Executive Sous Chef of the New Orleans Marriott. I was delighted to see so many young people participating in this year event.
The elegant evening was magnificent. The food catered by the Monteleone for the patron party and The Marriott for the regular gala was delicious. Deacon John and his band, The Ivories, kept everyone dancing in between sips of divine Veuve Clicquot champagne and libations provided by Glazer's and bites of exquisite foods. No wonder I keep gaining weight. Life is too good!
While, there I had the opportunity to see the two new exhibits at NOMA. I want to encourage everyone to visit the New Orleans Museum of Art to see the two fascinating new exhibit: Gaston Lachaise 1882-1935 and “Louisiana: Where Land Meets Water” - an exhibit that is the second collaborative exhibition organized by The Historic New Orleans Collection and NOMA. The exhibition will continue through March 2, 2008.
Gaston Lachaise 1882-1935 is a must! ...... This exhibition, a selection of eighty sculptures and twenty drawings organized by the Lachaise Foundation, captures the essence of Gaston Lachaise, the man and his work, and his critical role in the birth of American Modernism. The majority of the sculptures in the exhibition are non-commissioned works; they were not commercial ventures for Lachaise, so they illustrate the kinds of subjects he sculpted for personal pleasure. Most of these sculptures are of his mistress, who later became his wife, Canadian-American Isabel Dutaud Nagle, or 'Belle' as he called her. His forms are, in part, classical, from his training at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, with a hint of Art Nouveau, from his time working with René Lalique, cutting-edge, from his desire to push the boundaries of art, and evocative, informed by the exotic art of other cultures, including pre-Columbian, ethnographic, Indian and Southeast Asian.
On Sunday, I attended Christine Breaux's "Weddings With Style" at the Windsor Court Hotel and the venue was packed to the rim. Wedding planning is a big business, as demonstrated by the variety of exhibitors marketing their products. I loved the flower arrangements, the gowns, the beautiful wedding cakes created by talented pastry chef Ann … of the Windsor Court. Pink Korbel champagne was flowing freely and the melted chocolate fountains were very popular items among the guests. I saw many of my friends including Mauritius island-born Chef Domenic Marquet of Dominique’s Restaurant and his lovely wife Russia-born Julia who looked radiant as she is expecting their first child.
In case you have never been to award winning Dominique’s Restaurant at the Maison Dupuy Hotel at Burgundy and Toulouse streets, in the French Quarter, this is a perfect time before the conventioneers get here. I recently went there and the food was superb. Right now he is featuring a four-course Argentine dinner that is out of this world. The price is only $75, including matching Argentine wines that have selected by his Argentinean chefs to complement the dinner. Check it out!
This week is going to be a very busy one as well but what else is new?”
This Wednesday I am looking forward to co-hosting, along with Al Groos, the General Manager of the Royal Sonesta Hotel my monthly Round Table Luncheon at Begue’s. It will be a Salute to New Orleans Cultural Arts and its future. Representatives from the New Orleans Opera, LPO, CAC, N.O. Ballet and N.O Museum of Art are the featured speakers and will discuss the upcoming cultural season. I am happy to report that it is completely SOLD OUT.
Well, next time do not wait until the last minute. The good news is that the same day, the JW Marriott Hotel on Canal Street, is inviting everyone to experience an evening of cultural indulgences every Wednesday in their lobby, featuring works by local artists from 5:30 to 8 p.m. This week the spotlight is on R.R. Lyon, an internationally known abstract artist. He was selected for the Florence Biennale and shows in Venice, Paris, London, and other major city worldwide. You can see his work at www. Rrlyonstudio.com
Live music will be provided by multi-talented, multi-instrumentalist Tony Seville to complement the complimentary hors d’oeuvres and wine tasting. I was there last week and it was delightful, with great local art, delicious hors d’oeuvres, great wines and fabulous fashion by Rubenstein Brothers.
This column is going to be very short because I am going to be sending another one on Friday about my hot picks of the week.

With the pace of rebuilding and renovating homes going strong two years after Katrina, New Orleans residents are also turning their attention to greening the city overall, landscaping property for sale, and gardening in the front yards of their newly restored homes, as well as neighborhood neutral grounds, and public spaces.
To compliment the tradition, revitalization, and innovation of gardening interests around town, the New Orleans Botanical Garden in City Park is offering you a wide assortment of educational programs that will be held at the Botanical Garden this fall and throughout the year.
A series of twenty lectures run through November 7th. Our lectures touch on everything ranging from aesthetic issues, to climate-specific and sustainable gardening, with special lectures on color, growing roses and orchids, vegetable gardening, flower arranging, insect issues, garden photography, etc. A cooking demonstration and tour of “Katrina Recovery” residential gardens around town is also featured. To see schedule of events, visit: http://www.neworleanscitypark.com/nobg.html, or check out our calendar below. Advance registration is recommended due to limited seating. ANTI-WAR ZOMBIE PLAY "Bury the Dead" -Cripple Creek Theatre Company opens its second season with Irwin Shaw's incisive anti-war play "Bury the Dead." As a burial detail conducts its duties and a chaplain prays over the dead, groans are heard from the newly dug graves and the fallen soldiers rise to their feet! Incensed at their plight, the men plead not to be buried in the saturated ground but instead ask to rejoin the living. "Bury the Dead" will run Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm from September 13th through October 20th at the North Rampart Community Center (formerly St. Marks Church) at 1130 North Rampart in the French Quarter. Tickets are $10; may be purchased online at www.seeaplay.org or by phone at 504-891-6815.
Darlings, I want to remind you to get your comfortable shoes, your cutest outfit and get your friends to sponsor you as you do the 18th annual walk to benefit the NO/AIDS Task Force. The Walk is a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together and raise much-needed funds for those affected by AIDS. Registration is at 8 a.m. and the walk is at 10 a.m. at Audubon Park, Shelter #10 – Magazine St. Entrance. Don’t let the 5 K (3.2 miles) intimidate you, before you know, you will be there partying the afternoon away at the Audubon Park’s after the race party. See you there!

International Award-Winning Dutch Illusionists Philippart and Anja Make It ‘Fun to be Fooled’ Beginning Sept. 13
NEW ORLEANS—Aug. 16, 2007- Harrah’s New Orleans is “thrilled” to welcome the world premiere of THRILLUSIONS®, an exciting theatrical magic show, to the Crescent City. THRILLUSIONS® will premiere Sept. 13 and continue through Oct. 7 at the Theatre at Harrah’s New Orleans. The show was created by local businesswoman Hollie Vest, owner of Magnolia Mansion, and internationally renowned illusionists Philippart and Anja. The illusionists graced the stages of Europe, Asia and Africa for years, and now Philippart and Anja are making their U.S. debut in New Orleans.
“We could not be more excited that THRILLUSIONS® is making its U.S. debut right here at Harrah’s New Orleans,” said Jim Hoskins, senior vice-president and general manager of Harrah’s New Orleans Casino and Hotel. “This fascinating duo is known worldwide for their amazing talents and we cannot wait to bring their phenomenal act to U.S. audiences.”
THRILLUSIONS® excites, captivates and boggles the minds of audience members with Philippart and Anja’s amusing antics and visual appeal. Philippart is the heart and soul of the show and exudes a calculatedly witty, naughty and sometimes shocking persona. Anja, his muse, is ever-challenging and teasing, and together, this pair put the thrill in illusions.
In the show, Philippart and Anja are Rockin the World of MagicSM with the help of legendary celebrity superstars that magically appear nightly. This madcap roller coaster ride of masquerade will have you on the edge of your seats—from the illusions to the costumes and music, THRILLUSIONS® makes it fun to be fooled!SM
THRILLUSIONS® will be featured at Harrah’s Theatre beginning Sept. 13, Thursdays through Sundays at 7 p.m. The schedule will include a 2 p.m. matinee show on Saturdays. World Premiere of *THE BREACH
by Catherine Filloux, Tarell McCraney and Joe Sutton:
Southern Rep's Second Commissioned Play About Hurricane Katrina
New Orleans?Southern Rep presents the *World Premiere of THE BREACH* by
Catherine Filloux, Tarell McCraney and Joe Sutton running September 30, 2007.
Performances are Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m.
The second of two commissioned plays by Southern Rep about Hurricane Katrina
THE BREACH demands answers to the questions: "How is it that reporters in trucks are slow driving past the crowds and the government isn't there? The police aren't there? The National Guard isn't there? Where IS everyone?"
We were abandoned. As our city flooded in the days after Katrina, those who were left behind were forced to fight for their survival. *THE BREACH*tells their story. Written collectively by three playwrights, it weaves together two intimate stories of life in the aftermath with that of a reporter who discovers that levee breaches and government negligence are old
hat in New Orleans.
Immediately after Hurricane Katrina, Producing Artistic Director Ryan Rilette decided that Southern Rep needed to address this catastrophic event not only for the local community but also on the national level. With that in mind Rilette commissioned local playwright John Biguenet to develop a work which became *RISING WATER* which ran at Southern Rep for eight weeks in Spring 2007. The second commissioned piece is *THE BREACH* which was initially developed by playwrights Joe Sutton and Catherine Filloux who were later joined by Tarell McCraney. The impetus for the play was to create a work that could be easily shared with audiences specifically affected by the 2005 storms. In December 2006 and early 2007 the play was read both locally and in Baton Rouge, LA; Biloxi, Bay St. Louis and Laurel, Mississippi. Soon other theatres were asking to present the play with readings occurring at Arena Stage, Washington, DC; The Long Wharf Theatre, Conn ecticut; Florida Stage, Miami, Florida; The Alliance Theatre, Atlanta, GA (this year's Regional Tony Award winner); and Seattle Rep in Seattle, Washington where the play will also receive a full-production directed by Tony Award winning director, David Esbjornson in January 2008. Southern Rep has received funding to develop this work from the Chisholm Foundation, The National Endowment for the Arts and The Rockefeller MAP Fund.
Tickets for *THE BREACH *are *on sale now* and range from *$18 for Previews*to *$30 on Opening Night*.* *To order, call *(504) 522-6545*, or order online through a secure server at *www.southernrep.com.*

6:13 pm - Rosh Hashanah Apple & Honey Apology Party!!
1020 St. Claude Avenue (between St. Philip & Ursulines 1 block off Rampart)
I might owe you an apology.
Maybe you owe someone an apology too?
Hey, this is the right party for you!
Every Rosh Hashanah we gather to eat apples and honey to usher in a sweet sweet new year. On Yom Kippur we will ask G@d forgiveness for our broken promises, but the in the period between the holidays, it is the custom to ask forgiveness from the people in your life for the things you may have done wrong. What better way to do this?
It is also a Rosh Hashanah custom to perform a Tashlich service before Yom Kippur.
Tashlich is a ritual where previous year's sins are symbolically "cast off" by throwing pieces of bread, or a similar food item, into a large, natural body of flowing water (such as the nearby Mississippi River). This service is derived from the Biblical passage (Micah 7:18-20) recited at the ceremony: "You will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea."
We are looking into it and if we do this, so far, I see no reason for not ending with a drink at Molly's at the Market, Home of of the Krewe McJieux, and frequented haunt of Krewe du Jieux's own Andrei and Laura Codrescu King of the Jieuxs in Exxxile and his Shabbos Queen!

Ogden After Hours -6:00 pm - 8:00 pm : Carry Ann Hearst
Cary Ann Hearst first found the Gun Street Girls living in various conditions of squalor in the dilapidated neighborhoods of Charleston, SC in the early months of Summer. Once the temperatures reached 120 degrees, and it was to hot to run away from their taunting and threats, Hearst surrendered her wallet and the last half of her bologna sandwich to the Girls, and waited to fall vicitm to their suspected cannibalism. Alas, it was to hot to eat. As they sat baking in the shade that day, they found in common a lust for heartbreak and a lack of transportation, the Gun Street Girls traded their switch-blades to the corner boys for a handle of Evan Williams and learned to play instruments salvaged from the post industrial wasteland beside the Cooper River. By the time September rolled around, the Gun Street Girls were finally well fed, well rehearsed and ready to pursue a career beyond street thuggery and seduction for money. This is their offer.... come to their show, lis ten to the song they have to sing, don't steal anything from them, nor lay a threatening hand on any one of them, and they promise to let you pass by in peace.

French Quarter Brass Band Series 2007
On Fridays the streets of the French Quarter will be alive with the sound of New Orleans’ Brass Bands. Every Friday through September 21st , a free Brass Band parade will start at the Bourbon Orleans Hotel, parade over 20 blocks of the French Quarter, pick up second liners and end at the steps of the Louisiana Supreme Court Building to play a Brass Band concert. This new cultural experience is spearheaded by the French Quarter Business Association. Mark Wilson summed up its significance, “As President of the French Quarter Business Association and Marketing Director of the Royal Sonesta Hotel, it is obvious that our second Post-Katrina summer is a tough challenge for the French Quarter. We reached out to a core group of French Quarter stakeholders and asked them to help us celebrate the stately historic ambience of the Vieux Carre with the exuberant excitement of Brass Band music. We thought that locals and visitors alike would enjoy a parade on Frid ay and an invitation to spend some time in the Quarter during the weekend shopping, eating and drinking.” We are proud to announce our musical lineup:
September 14th Bone Tone Brass Band
September 21st Algiers Brass Band.
The second line marching band parade is one of the great New Orleans cultural traditions. For centuries, it has celebrated life and death, jazz funerals and Mardi Gras parades. New Orleanians never tire of seeing and hearing the Bands and visitors are amazed and surprised exuberance of a second line parade. Sandra Shilstone, President and CEO of the New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation, loves a parade, "We know that our leisure visitors come for the music, the history, the architecture of the French Quarter and the food. As we rebuild our City, The New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation will keep reminding everyone that our spirit is strong and our deepest cultural assets are here to enjoy right now."
The parade, complete with carriages and Kern Sculpture’s special creations, starts at 6pm at the 700 block of Orleans Street and strolls through more than 20 blocks of the French Quarter. All second line dancers, marchers and handkerchief wavers are invited to join all along the route. At 6:15 the Brass Band will play on the steps of the Louisiana Supreme Court Building. Beer, wine and light refreshment will be available to purchase.
The French Quarter Brass Band Series 2007 is made possible through the generous support of its main sponsors: The Berger Companies, The Bourbon Orleans Hotel, the Dauphine Orleans Hotel, MCC Inc., New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation, and Glazer’s Companies of Louisiana, and SDT Waste and Debris. Co-sponsor include: Kern Sculpture, The Royal Sonesta Hotel, and Faux Pas Prints. The French Quarter Brass Band Series 2007 was created and produced by the French Quarter Business Association. All locals and visitors are invited to come to the French Quarter now and make this free Brass Band experience a new Friday night tradition.
