I hope you have been enjoying the glorious weather that October brings to our steamy city as much as I have. We have a wonderful weekend ahead of us. Last night I attended the fun-filled opening of the New Orleans Film Festival. My darling friends: beautiful Alexa Georges and talented Roger Wilson of Broadway South co-chaired the fundraiser soiree at Republic New Orleans in the Warehouse District. The evening was spectacular. Legendary T.J Solomon of Gulf Theatres was honored as the first recipient of the Celluloid Heroes Award. There was a delightful short documentary that captured TJ among all the luminaries that have been in his theaters. Among those were Sophia Loren, Jane Fonda, Catherine Zeta Jones, John Travolta, Warren Beatty and many others.
The red carpet affair featured Big Sam’s Funky Nation with All –Star Specials guests presenting a New Orleans jazz and blues musical review. The spectacular food by Bayona, Delachaise, Galatoire’s, La Cote Brasserie, Lillete, Luke, 7 on Fulton, Herbsaintsand Cochon was to die for, in addition to freely flowing Moet Hennessey Veuve Cliquot, free valet parkingand many other amenities that made this evening a very memorable one. Each weekend in October, 2007, the French Market will present Jazz music throughout the French/Flea Market to pay tribute to the music which is completely spontaneous and genuine and so deeply associated with New Orleans.
JAZZ AWARENESS began statewide in 1980, but in recent years this event has not had the attention it deserves,” says Kenneth Ferdinand, Executive Director of the French Market. “Jazz is an original American art form and has played an important role in New Orleans’ history and culture,” Ferdinand added.
“Now three decades old, JAZZ AWARENESS MONTH in October was the first annual
celebration of this original American art form. Created in the state of its birth by the Louisiana Jazz Federation, JAM brings together fans and players of all jazz forms to perpetuate the most creative music in the world,” added Jason Patterson, Program Director, New Orleans Jazz Centennial Celebration.
Performances for Jazz Awareness Month are as follows:

“Tuba Fats was a living legend and now I am passing that style to the next generation. His legend will live on,” Kirk Joseph stated.
Anthony ‘Tuba Fats’ Lacen was New Orleans’ most famous tuba player with a career that spanned more than 40 years. He played traditional jazz and blues, with virtually all of New Orleans’ Brass Bands: Gibson, Doc Pauline, Olympian, Tuxedo and he was a founding member of the Dirty Dozen.
His nickname came in 1970, he said courtesy of Jerome Smith of the Tambourine & Fan organization and Fats always maintained, “New Orleans musicians have a certain feeling in their music that peoples like. It’s that beat; we’ve got that beat.” Tuba Fats traveled
extensively on numerous occasions in Europe, the Far East, Australia, South America and Russia, but when in town The Chosen Few Brass Band was known for performing almost every day in Jackson Square in the French Quarter. Lacen is credited with helping jazz banjoist DannyBarker rekindle interest in Brass Band jazz.

BR'ER RABBIT CAPTURED! A DR. DAVID HARLEYSON ADVENTURE--Children's illustrator /author Jean Cassels
Location: Octavia Book - 513 Octavia St. - New Orleans
We hope you will bring your young ones along for a special afternoon reading and signing with New Orleans children's book illustrator and author Jean Cassel who will wow you with her secon Dr. David Harleyson adventure.
Come along with John D. and Uncle David as they travel down South to SandyCreek, where Br'er Fox has "thoughtfully" agreed to help Uncle David capture Br'er Rabbit on canvas-his lifelong dream. It's easier said than done though, since Br'er Rabbit is too busy slipping out of the grasp of Br'er Fox and Br'er Wolf to sit for his portrait.
Classic Uncle Remus tales come to life in John D.'s letters to his dad, recounting his summer of adventures-and misadventures-with his new friends Br'er Rabbit, Br'er Bear, Br'er Fox, and all the favorite characters of these beloved tales from our Southern heritage.

CARRIE'S FACTS OF LIFE!
Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, October 13 - 21 at One Eyed Jacks
New Orleans, LA - Join Running With Scissors as they stumble back a few decades to the ivy-covered halls of the Eastland School, home to Blair, Tootie, Jo, Natalie, and their spunky supervisor, Mrs. Garrett. It's late in the spring semester, and the girls have just one thing on their minds: hot dates for the senior prom! But it's when part-time housekeeper/full-time proselytizer Margaret White moves into the attic with her telekinetic daughter, Carrie, that things really start to heat up! Will Blair be, like, totally banned from the prom? Will Natalie confess her true feelings to Jo? Will Tootie ever take off those damn rollerskates? And, um, what's the deal with Cousin Jerri? Tune in this October and find out!
Carrie's Facts of Life stars (in order of appearance): Bob Edes as Mrs. Edna Ann Garrett; Travis Acosta as Joanna 'Jo' Marie Polniaczek; Donald Lewis as Dorothy 'Tootie' Ramsey; Dorian Rush as Blair Warner; Lisa Picone as Natalie Letisha Sage Green; Brian Peterson as Mrs. Margaret White and Cousin Jerri; and Jack Long as Principal Morton, Billy Nolan, and poor, misguided Tommy Ross. Carrie's Facts of Life was conceived by Richard Read and Flynn De Marco and written by Jack Long and Richard Read. Wigs and costumes by Brian Peterson. Sets by Brad Caldwell. Props by Liz Zibilich. Technical assistance by Zalia BeVille and Cameron Stewart.

One hundred classic wooden boats, hundreds of spectator boats, and approximately 30,000 wooden boat and music enthusiasts will come to Madisonville for the two-day celebration of these graceful, historic old boats.
Painted by John Goodwyne of Bush, Louisiana, the 2007 Wooden Boat Festival poster depicts a racing boat theme. With Old Madisonville Town Hall in the background, the poster features three wooden racing boats, one of which is the famous L-33 built in Covington by the Floyd Hopkins family founders and owners of Hopkins Propeller Service-makers of custom propellers for racing boats. The L-33, which raced on the Tchefuncte River, went on to become a state champion. Mrs. Sue Hopkins was one of the first women in competitive racing.
Goodwyne’s signed and numbered 2007 poster can be purchased at the Wooden Boat Festival for $30.00. After the Festival, a signed and numbered poster can be purchased in the Maritime Museum Gift Shop for $45.00 and $25.00 for an unsigned poster.
The classics of the water will meet the classics of the road as the Classic Car Cruise-In is expected to attract more than one hundred cars from across the region. The Bud Light Stage will rock the River with performances by Four Unplugged, Five Finger Discount, Harvey Jesus & Fire, Big Al & the Heavyweights, and country music rising star Chris Gray. Unique artisans and marine and food vendors will line the banks of the Tchefuncte River.
The Busch Bass Pro Mobile Marketing Experience will feature a Budweiser hunting simulator and Pro Buck Hunter 3, (the hottest video game on the market). Angelers can test their casting proficiency at the Busch casting pond.
Blitz-build a boat in the ever-popular Quick ’n’ Dirty Boat-Building Contest, as up to 20 teams compete to be the first to float to the finish line. A team consists of a four-to six-member crew, which brings a Mardi Gras feel to the festival as crews pick themes, name their boats, and dress up in costumes. At 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 14th, the crews parade from the ballfield to the River, where the ultimate contest begins.
The Children’s Village on the Main Street ballfield will feature daily performance by Captain. Papillion, sponsored by Tulane Hospital for Children at Tulane Medical Center, M. T. Noggin the clown, and Kid Fish, where children can catch live fish, and many more fun-filled family activities and crafts.
“Over the years, I have seen the festival grow from a local to a regional event,” says WBF chairwoman and board member Trilby Lenfant. “This demonstrates the public increased interest in preserving the Lake Pontchartrain Basin as well as savoring the food, fun, and music of our area.”
The Wooden Boat Festival kicks off with Maritime Mania, sponsored by Omni Bank. The pirate-themed party will be held on Friday, October 12, from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. at the Maritime Museum. Tickets cost $75 each before October 9 and $85 each after October 9. Tickets to this popular bash are coveted and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Maritime Mania tickets can be purchased by calling the Museum at (985) 845-9200. Visa and MasterCard are accepted.
Festival sponsorships begin at $500 and include tickets to Maritime Mania and the Festival, Wood Boat Festival posters and t-shirts, Maritime Museum memberships and other exciting benefits and marketing opportunities.
Daily admission to the Festival is $10 per person, $5 for seniors over 65, and free for children under 12 and for uniformed military personnel.
The Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum partners with Southeastern Louisiana University to research, preserve, and display the maritime history of Lake Pontchartrain and adjacent waterways. “The Maritime Museum depends on the Wooden Boat Festival for a significant portion of its daily operating budget,” says Dr. Jay Martin, Museum Executive Director. “The success of the festival will insure the growth of the Museum’s educational programs and exhibits.”
Ample parking and shuttles will be available.

Laughter helps to strengthen your heart and helps prevent arteriosclerosis. I don't know about you, but preventing anything in my body that ends in Sclerosis sounds like a GOOD THING!
Also...Laughter helps the production of Natural Killer Cells, (cancer-killing cells!) Laughter also boosts the immune system, increases the production of endorphins (runner's high) and DECREASES production of tension and stress hormones like Cortisol and testosterone!
De-Stress and feel BETTER...and just laugh! it's EASY!

There will be two screenings at Canal Place Cinema on Sunday, October 14 (5 pm & 7 pm) in conjunction with the New Orleans Film Society.
Film Description:
Think you know New Orleans history? Well, think again. Faubourg Tremé:
The Untold Story of Black New Orleans is a fascinating look at one of our city's most fascinating neighborhoods. Journey with writer Lolis Eric Elie as he uncovers Treme's mysterious and forgotten past.
Long ago, this place was home to the most prosperous and politically active black community in America. Here black and white, free and enslaved, rich and poor co-habitated, collaborated, and clashed to create much what defines our city today. Drawing on footage shot before Hurricane Katrina and much never before seen archival footage, Faubourg Treme is a riveting tale of hope, heartbreak, and endurance.
For those of you who will be in town, we'd love to see you there. If not, please help us spread the word and forward this on to your friends.
All tickets on sale today $7.00 for New Orleans Film Society members, and $8 for non-members Tickets for Canal Place screenings on sale at www.moviefone.com or at the box office.

CULINARY EXHIBITION EXTENDED BY POPULAR DEMAND
WHAT’S COOKING IN NEW ORLEANS?: CULINARY TRADITIONS OF THE CRESCENT CITY TO REMAIN ON VIEW THROUGH NOVEMBER 17, 2007
The Historic New Orleans Collection will extend its current exhibition, What’s Cooking in New Orleans?: Culinary Traditions of the Crescent City, through Saturday, November 17. On display in the Williams Gallery at 533 Royal Street, the show is free and open to the public Tuesday–Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
In addition to extending the exhibition, The Collection is also preparing a fall culinary lecture series that will offer more opportunities for the city’s residents and guests to engage in that most-relished pastime: talking about food. The series is expected to begin mid-September and will feature presenters such as Judy Walker, food editor of the Times-Picayune. Visit The
Collection online at www.hnoc.org for updates to the fall schedule. ;
The interactive exhibition, which has been viewed by thousands of patrons, is only one of the ways THNOC has been championing local efforts to preserve Creole cooking practices.
What’s Cooking in New Orleans? builds upon The Collection’s nationally acclaimed 2005 project “A Dollop of History in Every Bite,” which involved hundreds of area school children exploring local culinary traditions. In April 2007, Dollop was expanded to include more than 1,500 students in Jefferson and Orleans Parishes and to focus participants’ efforts on culinary preservation.
“Our culinary practices are an aspect of Louisiana’s history that is lived and enjoyed daily,” said John Lawrence, director of museum programs. “They are rooted in tradition and constantly changing.”
What’s Cooking in New Orleans? serves as an appetizer to understanding the cuisine that defines the city. With an eclectic display of cookbooks, menus, photographs, and other objects spanning the 18th through mid-20th centuries, the display introduces patrons to the cultural, economic, and social factors that shaped New Orleans cuisine, primarily Creole cuisine.
“What’s Cooking in New Orleans? explores the relationships between food and the city’s dynamic, ever-changing lifestyle,” said Lawrence. “The effects New Orleans has had on its food, and food has had on New Orleans are truly unique.”
To further entice visitors, What’s Cooking in New Orleans? offers video clips, podcasts, and an on-site recipe exchange. Two documentaries, We Live to Eat: New Orleans’s Love Affair with Food and A Common Pot: Creole Cooking on the Cane River, both by New Orleans filmmaker Kevin McCaffrey, are on view as part of the exhibition.
Editor’s Notes: Digital images of the exhibition items are available upon request. Please contact Teresa Devlin (teresad@hnoc.org, 504-598-7170) with sizes and specifications.
Founded in 1966, The Historic New Orleans Collection is a museum, research center and publisher dedicated to the study and preservation of the history and culture of New Orleans and the Gulf South region.
