 I hope you are enjoying the beautiful weather that mother nature has provided us this week.   I ran out of energy yesterday. I skipped a few parties to stay home to recharge my battery for an extremely busy week full of fun events.

The Backbeat Foundation announced the 2008 Backbeat Jazz Fest Series. This year the Backbeat Foundation has expanded its evening series to showcase the most dynamic talent in New Orleans along side exciting national acts. For 2008, the Backbeat Foundation spreads across the city presenting more than 20 acts at 3 venues: Blue Nile (BN); Tipitinas French Quarter (TFQ); and Republic NOLA (RN). The 3RD Annual Backbeat Jazz Fest Series keeps the groove going through Sunday, May 4th. 
Friday, May 2: Troy Trombone Shorty Andrews & Orleans Ave; The Dynamites and Big Sams Funky Nation (BN); Lettuce (TFQ).

Saturday, May 3: Dirty Dozen Brass Band (TFQ); Toubab Krewe; U-Melt and DJ Logic (BN).

Sunday, May 4: Hyena Records Showcase featuring Marco Benevento Trio with Mike Dillon's Go Go Jungle, John Ellis' Doublewide, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey and surprise special guests.

 

My darling friend pianist Jim Walpole is playing solo this weekend at Broussard 's Restaurant on Conti Street. Check him out.

 

 The Harrahs Casino is presenting on Friday,May 2 at 9 p.m. at the Harrah's Theatre:  
Deacon John and the Ivories  and on Saturday, May 3  : Nathan & The Zydeco Cha-Chas and Rosie Ledet & the Zydeco Playboy.


 Olivia Greene will sing with her traditional Jazz Trio on Friday, May 2 , from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. at the  Columns Hotel,3133 St. Charles Ave. The exemplary Jazz Trio features Lars Edegran-banjo, Christian Winthers-clarinet, and Dewey Sampson-bass. The evening is made possible through the generosity of Renew Our Music and Sweet Home New Orleans.

This Friday, the Obituary Cocktail Society is meeting as usual from 6 to 7 p.m. at this great New Orleans saloon, Marie Laveau Voodoo, 509 Decatur. Call 522-7225. (This is a very small offbeat bar.)

 The Bombay Club is presenting on Saturday, May 3,  my darling friend Lilliam Boutte and her Band from 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.. As you know, Lilliam has been living in Germany for decades. I had the pleasure of traveling with her and 40 musicians from New Orleans for about three weeks throughout Europe. I have the  fondest memories of that unforgetable experience. .

 

 On Saturday, May 3, talented Riccardo Crespo and  his band "Sol Brazil" are officially releasing their new CD " Milonga Di NOLA" at the Mystick Den of the Royal Sonesta Hotel from 9p.m. to Midnight. On Saturday, May 3,Fun, music and hot, boiled Louisiana crawfish await you in the Tourist Park next to the new Abita Trailhead from 11 a.m. to midnight. Adult admission is$10, children 12 and younger get in free. The very popular Jammin' on Julia is taking place this Saturday, May 3, on Julia Street, from South Peters Street to St. Charles Avenue. This is THE STREET PARTY AFTER JAZZ FEST! featuring  the band Ole Man River and musicians from the Tipitina’s Foundation. 1960s era automobiles on display.

 

Jammin’ on Julia is the New Orleans Arts District Association’s (NOADA) annual fundraiser that has become the best Jazz Fest after-party in the city. For many years it was held at individual galleries throughout the Arts District, but now it has evolved into a large street party with galleries open for evening visitors. Six blocks of Julia Street in the Warehouse District will be closed to vehicular traffic and turned into one large block party. Local restaurants will provide New Orleans’ favorite dishes, while bars set up along Julia Street will offer special drinks. Jamming on Jazz is featuring Art, Music & Food and dancing to the tunes of the ‘60s.

The annual Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival (May 2-4) takes place this weekend at Beaux Bridge, Louisiana.

On Friday, May 2, the second weekend of Jazz Fest kicks off with the incendiary sounds of the Lee Boys.  The sacred steel group hails from the same branch of the Pentecostal Church that produced Robert Randolph and other stars of the genre.  Though now performing in the secular world, the Lee Boys bring all the strength, power and grace of the church to the nightclub stage.  Groovesect, one of the most highly lauded instrumental combos to emerge from post-Katrina New Orleans, opens the show.
