Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

Darling friends,

I am still recuperating from the downpour that JazzFest attendees experienced this weekend. It did not dampen our spirit but it was a déjà vu that brought back a lot of memories of past Fests of a decade ago.

Fortunately for us, we were able to enjoy wonderful music prior to the festival and after. I am looking forward to the performance at the Bombay Club of talented vocalist, Lillian Boutte, who is returning this Saturday from 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.  Not to be missed. I also enjoyed seeing Lady B.J at the Carousel Bar of the Monteleone Hotel. This weekend, the Carousel Bar is presenting: Friday, May 2nd - New York City’s Bill Malikow,Saturday, May 3rd - Tom Mc Dermott & Evan Christopher and Sunday, May 4th - Don Vappie

On Tuesday, April 29, the Community Book Center is inviting everyone to an exceptional Art Exhibit Showcasing Beautiful & Rare Artwork from Haiti, including paintings, statues, metal art, leather masks and beaded art. CNN journalist Anderson Cooper will be lecturing this Tuesday at Tulane’s McAlister Auditorium, 6823 St. Charles Avenue at 6 p.m. Free admission.

And speaking of books, I want to congratulate my dear friend, Dean M. Shapiro, on the publication of his new novel, The Eleventh Commandment. It is the suspense-filled fictionalized story of a reporter who goes undercover to expose a militant polygamist cult leader suspected in the deaths of a dozen or more followers and, in the process, risks his own life by falling in love with one of the cult leader’s wives. Dean will be doing book signings at local bookstores and libraries in the coming weeks and his book can be ordered through Barnes & Noble online. You can email him for more information at deanslist2@aol.com or call him at 376-8919.

On Tuesday, April 29 and Wednesday, April 30, the Seventh Annual Ponderosa Stomp will take place at the House of Blues. Jammin’ on Julia is the New Orleans Arts District Association’s (NOADA) annual fundraiser that has become the best Jazz Fest after-party in the city. For many years it was held at individual galleries throughout the Arts District, but now it has evolved into a large street party with galleries open for evening visitors. Six blocks of Julia Street in the Warehouse District will be closed to vehicular traffic and turned into one large block party. Local restaurants will provide New Orleans’ favorite dishes, while bars set up along Julia Street will offer special drinks. Jamming on Jazz is featuring Art, Music & Food and dancing to the tunes of the ‘60s.

If you are crazy about crawfish, like I am, the annual Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival (May 2-4) at Beaux Bridge, Louisiana, the “Crawfish Capital of the World” is a great place to explore authentic Cajun culture in southern Louisiana. With its relaxing atmosphere, quaint downtown streets and traditional Cajun and funky Zydeco music, it's the perfect culturally-rich getaway about 120 miles west of New Orleans along I-10.

Being Latina, I invite you to celebrate the Cinco de Mayo (May 3-5) block party on Frenchmen Street, on one of our lively neighborhood at the edge of the French Quarter. The celebration will include Latin bands, food, piñata contests, vendors, Mexican art and, of course, great Margaritas.

On Tuesday April 29, the Blues, Country and Roots showcase brings together a diverse cast of musical characters whose styles span the length and breadth of American music.  Gal Holliday, a well-regarded songstress on the local scene, sings classics from the country canon with her Honky Tonk Revue.  Jeff and Vida, a compelling couple that first emerged from the Crescent City and are now making waves in Nashville, compliment the evening with a compelling selection of original tunes.  Ingrid Lucia, a songbird who first performed as a pre-teen in Jackson Square, brings her saucy presence to the stage with a great band of first-rate jazzers.  Harmonica ace Johnny Sansone appears as a special guest.

Chickie Wah Wah is located at 2828 Canal Street in the heart of Mid City.  The phone number for more information is (504) 304-4714.  The web site is chickiewahwah.com.

Celebrating Jazz Month and Jazz Fest 2008...

THE ART OF JAZZ

A traveling exhibition by the Louisiana State Museum illustrates the many ways jazz has been interpreted by artists over the past century.

Entitled THE ART OF JAZZ, the exhibition will be on view at East Bank Regional Library from April 15 to May 15, 2008, in the Main Hall during library hours.

Comprised of over 40 colorful photographic reproductions from the State Museum's
extensive jazz collection and other sources, THE ART OF JAZZ features portraits, paintings, posters, and photographs arranged in six thematic sections.  Images in the first section, "Impressions of Jazz," illustrate how artists sought to depict the feelings the music aroused
in them.

The New Orleans Museum of Art has initiated new evening hours one day a week. The Museum is now open every Wednesday from Noon until 8:00 pm. The adjacent Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden will be open  from 10:00 am until 8:00 pm on Wednesdays as well. The Museum and Garden also are open Thursday through Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The purpose of the extended hours is not only to make the Museum available in the evening for students and those who work during the day but to help to promote the many fine restaurants, both old and  new, in the MidCity area. So after touring the Museum, visitors are encouraged to have dinner at an area restaurant. A list of MidCity participating restaurants will be available at the Museum.

During the Rodrigue Exhibition, through June 6, admission is $5.00 for Louisiana resident adults and $10 for non-resident adults.  Visitors under 18 years are admitted free courtesy of The Helis Foundation. Museum Members are free at all times.

The mid-week musical smorgasbord continues on Thursday, May 1 with sets by two bands with Crescent City soul.  The Iguanas developed their unique hybrid of Tex-Mex and R&B in the clubs of New Orleans.  They are now known world wide as tasteful purveyors of sax-driven soul and blues.  Paul Cebar, the closest thing to a native son who by accident of birth lives in the Midwest, brings his worldly groove to Canal Street as a highly anticipated opening act.

Chickie Wah Wah is located at 2828 Canal Street in the heart of Mid City.  The phone number for more information is (504) 304-4714.  The web site is chickiewahwah.com.

On Friday, May 2, the second weekend of Jazz Fest kicks off with the incendiary sounds of the Lee Boys.  The sacred steel group hails from the same branch of the Pentecostal Church that produced Robert Randolph and other stars of the genre.  Though now performing in the secular world, the Lee Boys bring all the strength, power and grace of the church to the nightclub stage.  Groovesect, one of the most highly lauded instrumental combos to emerge from post-Katrina New Orleans, opens the show.

Chickie Wah Wah is located at 2828 Canal Street in the heart of Mid City.  The phone number for more information is (504) 304-4714.  The web site is chickiewahwah.com.

All shows begin around 10 PM.
