Darling readers,

Put your events on our Bayoubuzz Calendar.  See What is going on throughout the state.

As you know, New Orleans is a city of celebrations but no other month is more evident than the month of July, when we  celebrate the Essence Festival, Go Fourth on the River, Bastille Day, Tales of the Cocktail, Christmas in July and a few others celebrations aimed at keeping us cool and very spirited.

I personally have a few additional celebrations:

Two of my favorite people and one of New Orleans’ most talented couples just had a very special gift. Baby girl Elle Jolie St. John was born June 27 to the proud parents, artist Marco St. John and the lovely, talented entertainer Anais St. John. Congratulations!

My darling friends Kristin Leona Littwin and Nathan Blaine Gile better know as Chef Nick of the Bombay Club are tying their wedding knot today, Tuesday, July 1, at the Riverboat Creole Queen. Congratulation to the newlyweds!

Two more of my favorite people are celebrating their birthdates: Michael St. Miguel (July 5) and Chanteuse Suzaune Yee McKamey (July 6).  Congratulations to them!

Energetic, beautiful Cheryl Mintz is celebrating her engagement to Brett Bauman.. Congratulation!

And last but not least, I think the entire State of Louisiana is celebrating Governor Jindal’s veto of the legislative pay raise. It was time for Governor Jindal to exercise some wisdom and leadership and he did. As my friend Stephen Sabludowsky, Publisher of Bayoubuzz.com and founder of Citizen Can said, “Let's help him build this state. The people have spoken. They own this state, not the government.”

Steve also announced that the rally in Baton Rouge, scheduled for July 7, is cancelled now that the governor has taken this action.

Versatile pianist and entertainer Phil Melancon is playing Sunday through Thursday at the Bombay Club, 832 Conti Street, from 9 p.m. On July 4th Lisa Lynn & Trio @ 9:30pm Clarinetist Tim Laughlin is playing on Saturday from 9:30 p.m.

This Tuesday, July 1 from 6 to 8 p.m., Dos Jefes Uptown Cigar Bar, 5535 Tchoupitoulas Street, is hosting its weekly wine tasting. Spanish wines will be featured, including Segura Viudas –Cava brut; Martin Codas –albarino; and Osborne Solaz – blanco & tempranillo cabernet.  The live local music will featured the following entertainers :

The New Orleans Museum of Art is inviting everyone to “Get Over the Hump” and visit the Museum from noon to 8 p.m. This Wednesday, July 2, starting at 6 p.m., you can see the wonderful film, “Botero the Rebel” and next Wednesday, July 9, in conjunction with the exhibit “The Baroque World of Fernando Botero,” there will be a “Festival of Flavors” Colombian Tapas from Colombian Friends of the Museum.. By the way, I urge you to see the exhibit. It is delightful and it made me feel very slender. The opening Fiesta Columbiana was just fabulous.

If you are like me, you are looking forward to the return of the Essence Festival, July 3-6. The super Essence Festival, celebrating African-American music and culture returned to New Orleans in 2007. It's always over the Fourth of July weekend. The festival attracts nearly 200,000 of the best-dressed, most fun-loving, talented and committed people in the nation. The place to be is in the Superdome Saturday, July 5, when diva Patti LaBelle will be honored in an all-star tribute. The tribute will include two of the original members of LaBelle, Sarah Dash and Nona Hendryx, as well as singers Angie Stone, Ledisi, Chrisette Michele, Ruby Amanfu and New Orleans' own Irma Thomas. For a complete schedule visit http://www.nola.com/essencefest/

On Friday, July 4, the Obituary Cocktail Society is meeting, as always, from 6-7 p.m. at the Chartres House Cafe, 601 Chartres Street. They are getting ready for their annual trip to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico on August 8. If you want additional info please visit www. Obituarycocktail.org

As you know, New Orleans summers are hot – and there is no hotter place to be for the Fourth of July than in the Crescent City. The biggest celebration happens on BOTH banks of the Mississippi with the annual “Go Fourth on the River” festivities. From early afternoon on, there will be live music, food, drinks, crafts and other fun activities in Woldenberg Park alongside the river.

On the West Bank, Blaine Kern’s Mardi Gras World will be holding its own party and celebration, followed by a brass band second line up to the levee to watch the fireworks at 9 p.m. The pyrotechnic extravaganza, shot off from “Dueling Barges” in the middle of the river, is an exciting fireworks show to the tune of patriotic music. It’s rated one of the top five fireworks displays in the U.S.! Spend the day exploring the French Quarter before settling down for the show. Steamboats offer “fireworks cruises” in the evening, so you can get up close and personal with the amazing spectacle.

Also on July 4, New Orleans City Park Celebrates its first annual “Night of Stars and Stripes” at the  Carousel Gardens Amusement Park from 6-10 p.m. Log on to http://www.cityparkkids.com/

Great entertainment awaits you every Friday and Saturday night when Armand St. Martin performs “Solo on the Steinway in the Ritz-Carlton Cigar Bar from 6-11 p.m. Armand continues with his original songs and wonderful classic New Orleans covers in the Library, which is now transformed to a private Cigar Bar. $25/per or private membership.

The Polo Club Lounge, named by Zagat as one of New Orleans’ best bars in the city, is jazzin’ it up every Friday and Saturday with the hot entertainment series, "Playin’ At The Polo," featuring popular local musicians performing a repertoire of sophisticated jazz:
