New Orleans, Blacks and Katrina

The State of Black New Orleans . . .
The 3rd RECONSTRUCTION
NEW ORLEANS 2005 - We regard the rebuilding and reconstruction of the city of New Orleans to be an important historical, practical, and cultural imperative for the US today. New Orleans ( a.k.a. African Orleans) is arguably the US city that most displays African cultural retention and traditions, effortlessly blended into everyday life. It is also a city that evidences how a diversity of human cultures blends into a mosaic that demonstrates the essence of the multicultural idea that America still dreams of. The Crescent city is one of the world's great "Cultural cities," with a grand musical, culinary, architectural, religious, life rhythmic, folk, artistic and literary tradition comparable to any in the world. Indeed, New Orleans represents an indigenous people's "way of life," and an extraordinarily unique human civilization.

Yet despite its great cultural assets, it is also a city with deep racial and class divisions rooted in the history of slavery, racial segregation and socioeconomic disparities and inequalities. The faces of Katrina gave living expression to the numbing statistics on the quality of life for a significant number of African Americans (that most social observers already knew). In our city;

Perhaps rebuilding the city offers a unique historical and practical opportunity to promote racial justice, equity and healing resulting from the centuries of racial oppression and exploitation, i.e., to "humanize" the city. The displaced African-American community and low income households of all races can be integrated into the "new" Orleanean economy in ways never imagined in the past. If the city is rebuilt, it must address such inequities so that the displaced population perceives New Orleans as a city of quality, opportunity, and justice with a dramatically improved quality of life.

We suggest that the hundreds of billions in state, federal and private resources be targeted to:

New Orleans could then become a model of the sustainable and just city in the global era. We suggest the following principles and Citizen Bill of Rights' as the framework and values orientation that should guide the Rebuilding, Reconstruction and Recovery process. We call on the Millions More Movement, the Congressional Black Caucus, Local and state officials and the displaced citizens of New Orleans to consider and include the Bill of Rights and these principles in the legislation and programs to rebuild the city.

We also respectfully request that the CBC initiate its own Commission to thoroughly investigate all aspects of the physical and human dimensions of the Katrina disaster. The AALP, NOLOC and other groups call on all displaced New Orleaneans to unite behind these principles and Bill of Rights as we proceed to rebuild and reconstruct our homeland. We invite the CBC, the MMM, city and state officials and all Orleaneans to join us in this 3rd RECONSTRUCTION"

We Shall Return

The Katrina disaster is one of the most tragic events ever to occur in the history of the United States. An entire city was physically destroyed, and its people and culture were significantly compromised. Yet this failure of local, state and federal government and their emergency systems have not destroyed the will of the people to survive and triumph. Conversations and listening sessions with persons displaced by Katrina suggest that this as a historical moment to dig deeply into the reservoir of human capacity and rise from the depth of the waters to produce a new and different society

We envision a city based on sustainability, equity and justice, and a radically improved quality of life for all who choose to be citizens of a "new" Orleans. Both the AALP and the NOLOC are committed to rebuilding such a city that everyone would want to return to a city free of racism, poverty, marginality and injustice that we believe the Creator would prefer.

Please feel free to circulate communication within your networks, and plan to be present if you can. On Wednesday, December 28, 2005 we will hold a reunion of all AALP and Local Organizing Committee participants, advocates and supporters. Let's see if we all can invite someone from our network to come home for the Holidays on any of the 3 special days. We also encourage you to celebrate Kwanzaa wherever you are, and seek to have a night of your local Kwanzaa dedicated to the citizens of New Orleans.

"knights were bold" eh?... well I don't know about that. But how I long for the early days of the oil field. Wooden rigs and men of iron. The days when "men were men and sheep were scared."

On August 19th, 1871 Orville Wright the world reknowned aviator was born..... Now that was a man with a vision, and he was a man that was destined to soar to great heights........ Thank Gawd there was no such thing as the FAA back then or we would all probably still be walking around dreaming about the stars........

The last three posts were interesting displays of public postulation, the shame of it is that after that, there is only procrastination...... And that of course leades to stagnation, which ultimately affects the rest of the nation...... Ahhhh but for the days of old when knights were bold and they gathered at the table round........

Chaubert, dear, thank you for that statement. We looked up Mr. Sylvain and read his various statements at http://www.google.com/search?q=Vincent+Sylvain&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=ie7&rlz=1I7GGLR . Frankly, dears, Mr. Sylvain has a lot to learn and he could do that from Chaubert. The conspiracy theories are ridiculous and indicative of a rationale created by leaders of African ancestry that have kept the very people that they claim to represent encapsulated in the theory and time warp of slavery. Time to think, Mr. Sylvain. Time to think.

Amen Chaubert - great advice. Unfortunately those who live - generation after generation - on the backs of their fellow Americans are paid bonuses by the government to multiply. The problem is: "How do we care for a young, poor, single mother without encouraging the creation of ever more young, poor, single mothers?" I can define the problem but cannot provide a solution.

Dreams about what other people can do to save us count for much less than action we take to save ourselves. At the top of the list: read to your children; instill decent behavior and self-discipline. Make sure that your children attend school every day, and that they do their homework. Give a full day's work for a day's pay. Keep improving your own education: read the paper every day. Quit wasting your money on the lottery or gambling at the boats: invest in your kids education instead. Go to church. Clean up your own yard. Paint your own house. Don't litter. And quit thinking that there is anyplace in America, or the world, that is so special that every one else should subsidize it while it refuses to help itself.

New Orleans has been around for more than 300 years. It is only in the last 20 to 25 years that it has become a majority black city. The last 25 years are certainly nothing to be proud of with crime out of control and one of the worst education systems in the world. The city has made more progress in the past three years than in the past 30. It is truly unbelievable that some are determined to turn the clock back to 8/28/05.

An atheist was walking through the woods. - - "What majestic trees!" he marveled... "What powerful rivers!" he said,,, "Ah What beautiful animals!" He exclaimed to himself....... As he was walking alongside the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him....... He turned to look and saw a 7-foot grizzly bear charge towards him!!!!!! He ran as fast as he could up the path and as he looked over his shoulder he saw that the bear was rapidly closing in on him....... Suddenly He tripped & fell on the ground..... He rolled over to pick himself up but saw that the bear was right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw & raising his right paw to strike him.- - -- At that instant the Atheist cried out, "OH MY GOD!!!!!!!"...... All of a sudden time Stopped......... The bear froze......... The forest was silent......... As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky. "You deny my existence for all these years, teach others I don't exist and even credit creation to cosmic accident." "Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer"? - - - - The atheist looked directly into the light and muttered.... "It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps you could make the BEAR a Christian"? - - - - "Oh, Very Well." said the voice........ The light went out, the sounds of the forest resumed, and the bear dropped his right paw, then brought both paws together, and bowed his head & spoke: - - "Lord bless this food, which I am about to receive from thy bounty through Christ our Lord, Amen."

Racial injustice in boxing.... Black man gets knocked out by white boy in boxing bout...... "I would never lose to a white boy," crowed Bernard Hopkins to Joe Calzaghe at an event to promote their light heavyweight title fight. In fact, he yelled it four times in front of a multitude of journalists. There was no Don Imus or Michael Richards treatment for Hopkins, of course, due to his proper pigmentation....... But Calzaghe, who never lost his cool or responded in kind, doled out a more satisfying punishment on Saturday night. In front of an HBO audience and celebrities such as Katherine Zeta Jones, Tom Jones, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jay Z and Whitney Houston, Calzaghe won a relatively easy decision against Hopkins. The "Welsh Dragon" improved to 45-0 and cemented his status as one of the best fighters of all time. He will be ranked as the second best "pound-for-pound" fighter in boxing and perhaps the first should Oscar Dela Hoya defeat Floyd Mayweather this fall.

Now if you want my opinion on the residents in the 9th Ward being forced to relinquish their property ownership due to financial hardships brought on as a result of the failed flood walls, well, I side with the residents 100% and would do what I can to help....... But I am sort of deprived my own self, and I ain't even black... So I am unable to give much help, except perhaps a prayer, and a God Bless..... Go figger........

But then again, I suppose certain factions love to celebrate fiction, sort of like the rave of the 70's with Kunta Kinte and Alex Haley's 'Genelogical' presentation of Roots....... I mean after all, some factions of the white population run around pretending they are Star Trek or Starwars characters, so why not? Hey, I have the next fantasy holiday that blacks can call all their own, how about celebrating the rise of 'The Great Pumpkin'............. It can be called Great Pumpkin Eve instead of Hallo'ween....... Nah, that was based on some white dudes illusion too.... But then again, perhaps we should just concede to Afrimerica and get all global about stuff and adopt say, Zimbabwe's holidays too!!!! Who needs American traditions or harmony anyways? How about May 25th!! Africa day!!!! And while we are at it, lets do away with Independence day, no not the Fourth of July, everyone loves BBQ! But we can call it Malcom X day instead!!!! And being as Christmas is on the 25th, and Kwanzaa starts on the 26th and lasts through New Years Day, lets get rid of New Years Eve and call it Oblaboolahgumdumbumbum day instead in rememberance of all the neighborhoods that the whites caused the blacks to burn down, along with the rioting and looting, and the many to come in the following year if these type of petitions aren't granted.... And Christmas can remain, but all white folks will be forced to paint their faces black, and give their children lumps of coal out of respect for the plight of the oppressed black peoples around the world........ Oh, and the Monday after Easter Sunday, it will be a holiday too.... It can be called "In your face day"...... And everyone that is non-black will be forced to watch Micheal Jackson Videos and listen to Mariah Carey songs from morning till dark, and then the fast can be broken.... And Cinco De Mayo day?

Oh, and Kwanzaa? I suppose when they declare a national Harry Potter tribute day that may be something fun to 'celebrate' (if you are some kind of retard).... Can't remember the exacts of the story, but isn't Kwanzaa some sort of weird cultural phenomena like 'River Dance' or 'Lord of the Rings"? Seems to me some black intellectual at U.C. Berkley that didn't have anything better to do because he hadn't thought of Eubonics yet came up with that fantasy.... It's cute, it's quaint, sort of reminiscent of a Boudain Festival or a Devil's Food Cake Walk.... Get a life...............................
