NEW ORLEANS – As now Tropical storm Fay takes a strange route across land towards Louisiana, the Army Corps of Engineers released a statement noting that their teams are being activated.
Here is their statement issued Saturday afternoon:
As a result of the latest forecasted track of Tropical Storm Fay, all canal teams have been activated and will mobilize to their duty stations 8 a.m. Sunday as a precautionary measure.
Teams will report to London Ave., Orleans Ave., 17th St., and Harvey canals to do final checks and monitor the canals while staying in close contact with our emergency operations center and the Sewerage & Water Board.
“Although at this point we do not feel that we will need to operate our structures, we have activated our teams as a precautionary measure for the safety of the public,” said Col. Alvin Lee, New Orleans District commander. “However, we are prepared to close the gates and run the pumps should the need arise.”
The Industrial Canal Lock is currently dewatered for repairs. We are keeping a close watch on the lock and preparing to flood the lock should the conditions warrant. Currently we do not anticipate doing so.
Tropical Storm Fay is currently expected to make landfall north of Lake Pontchartrain Sunday afternoon.
