New Orleans: New VA, LSU Hospital Site Location

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

New VA hospital with partnership with LSU will occur in mid-city of New Orleans.    The partnership could include approximately 200 beds and with a two billion dollar investment.  Thousands of jobs are expected.  The announcement was made today in City Hall of New Orleans with Mayor Nagin and the top officials from the VA and the state.  The site is expected to be 70 acres bounded by Tulane Avenue, Canal Street, Claiborne Avenue and South Rocheblave.

The investment could be a major stimulus to a floundering economy in New Orleans area post-Katrina and will be a major boost to the health care industry.

The state is expected to pay fair market value for property owners in the area.  The state is also expected to help with relocation expenses.  The full reaction by property owners is certainly now unknown.  It might be necessary for the government to exercise eminent domain powers.

Hey, that's pretty good there..... 2 billion dollar investment, and 200 beds.... Ehhh, all they need to make is 10 million dollars per bed to break even.... That's a lot of bed time there.... Or, full occupancy, 1 million dollars per bed per year for 10 years, or $2,739.00 per day, per bed, for 10 years... But then there is operating costs, and being as beds are sort of cheap in the scheme of things, does that mean that daily operating costs can be up to 10 times per daily bed costs? Oh, I see, $27,000 + per day per bed!!! That total comes out to $1,971,000.000 per year 2006 annual VHA budget... approximately 32 billion...... Number of VA Hospitals AND clinics nationwide(There are 50 states in the Union you know)? I see a number that states 1,300... So if this was averaged out, which is loopy, but bear with me anyways, that equals approximately 24.6 million per year per facility.... But at that rate ($2,739.00 per day) they would be comming up short in the budget... Who dreams this crap up?

If our experience in Detroit is any indication, Lower Mid-City residents can expect little if any help from the government, and a lot of heartache. Our neighborhood Poletown was demolished for a Cadillac factory that was never built. Given the financial collapse we are facing now, I expect a similar gaping hole in the middle of the city, with hundreds of residents forcibly removed and internally displaced. People can hardly fathom the loss if you are not under threat.
