President Bush To Award New Orleans During State Of Union Speech

Written by: Stephen Sabludowsky

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

Today, I asked whether President Bush would be mentioning Katrina or Louisiana or New Orleans in his State of the Union address tonight.  Obviously, many have been quite upset that New Orleans was not mentioned last year and was only very briefly discussed months after Katrina struck.

According to the AP,  “President Bush will announce that an annual hemispheric meeting involving the leaders of the United States, Canada and Mexico will be held in New Orleans — a major Gulf Coast tourist attraction still struggling from the disastrous Hurricane Katrina.

The AP in citing Bush advisor, Ed Gillespie said the move will "demonstrate how this great American city of New Orleans is rebounding."

In addition, Irvin Mayfield, the New Orleans musician will be sitting in Laura Bush’s box.

Both are good signs and are significant improvements over the lack of Katrina acknowledgement in the past.

Let the power of this Great American City be trumpeted by President Bush so the world might know that New Orleans is trying to rebound despite many obstacles and sorely needs all public and private help so President Bush can fulfill the promises he made that hot September night in Jackson Square to do whatever it takes to rebuild the city.

It's a shame Sid that you rely on ad hominem (that's personal or "against the man" Sid) attacks, instead of engaging in logical discourse and argument. But if I were in your shoes Sid, I would probably just attack the messengers of truth also, as this Administration is damn near indefensible! I just hope you are defending them because like Dick, you are getting a piece of the action. This Administration brought to you by: ExxonMobil, "greed is good"; and Halliburton, "War is our business, and business is good!"

Sid, as I've posted here before, the Road Home sucks, and a large portion of the blame belongs on Blanco's shoulders. But part of the problem was she tried to hard to appease the rest of the country with all this red tape so as to eliminate fraud, because, of course, we have more fraud than the rest of the country. Another problem was with the VA company chosen to run it. I don't know if RE Lee is right, and they are connected to the Bush Administration, but it certainly wouldn't surprise me if they were. In contrast, Baker's plan would have been great. It's not like Richard Baker is a bleeding heart liberal, for cryin' out loud! In the end, I am certainly more afraid of corporations running the show than I am the government. At least our government (used to be?) is accountable to us, and not to its shareholders/CEOs. TW

Tee Buddy, I guess you agree that the Road Home Fiasco Program does belong to Blanco then?? And the Baker Plan was bad from the start??

Sid, Sid, Sid. Leave being clever to people who can actually do it, okay? TW

The Baker Plan was not good for the state. It was at best a band aid that would have allowed the US government to become the biggest real estate firm in New Orleans. I would rather not have the US government in this capacity. Also, does "Governor Blanco's Road Home Program" ring a bell? This is Blanco's baby, she was responsible for sending the contract to the Vorginia buddies. This program is the main reason that Blanco did not seek re-election. It's a mess, a self inflicted mess. Tee, is the National Enquirer your favorite news source?

What the hell, Sid. R.E. Lee is spot-on - I have a few points of disagreement with him, but when it comes to the big picture - HE GETS IT. You need to wake up and get your news from someone other than the corporate media, and especially that Australian billionaire. TW

Tee Dub and R E Lee, where in the world do you get your facts? Or should I ask, what are you smoking?

Let's review. While hundreds of citizens were drowning after Katrina in Louisiana, Dick Cheney was plotting to sabotage Valerie Plame's CIA career for proving him to be a liar. The V.P. could have cared less about his fellow countrymen, that he is supposed to serve - yeah right! Bush was late to show up, and when he did, it was for the cameras. This administration has actively fought against every piece of legislation that would have benefitted Louisiana. Whether it was stonewalling the Baker Plan, and then throwing the Road Home contract to his Virginia based buddies, or vetoing the appropriation monies to help rebuild our home - that Congress overrode. Finally, not only did this Administration not help us, it prevented others from helping too! When France, Germany and the Saudis wanted to send over $44 Billion in aid, Bush blocked the aid package!!! Unless, you are ignorant of how your federal "imperial" government works, there is no excuses that can be made to justify this Administration's indifference and opposition to our region. There are more facts to expound upon, but suffice it to say, Bush is from Texas, and when we lose, Houston benefits. Reveillez-vous la Louisianne!

Oh fabulous. We will have the top secret traitorous meeting of the North American Union group, which the press will simultaneously report and deny the existence of. Please google North American Union, Security and Prosperity Patnership, and Jerome Corsi's articles about the merger of the three countries. How perfect. MAybe we can start using the Amero here first. Bush is a traitor.

Too little too late. Dubuya didn't mention Katrina or New Orleans once last year in his State of the Union address and was riding his bicycle in Crawford while people were downing in New Orleans and along the Gulf Coast. Little wonder Vice-President Bush and President Cheney are the most popular tandem in the White House for the longest period of time since modern polling began. Five dead U.S. soldiers in Iraq today and red ink up to his arrogant, bullheaded eye balls when the nation's finances were seriously in the black when George W. took office. One year from eight days ago this intransigent buffoon will be gone--not a minute too soon! What's on ESPN or the Family Channel so I don't have to watch this failed president butcher the King's English for an hour?

J.B. Thanks for your comments. While I wish I could respond to all comments, I happened to see this one, so let me respond. I think almost anyone who lives near New Orleans and who has followed what has been going on since Katrina would know how incredibly slow the recovery has been. The old adage is so true, he has the gold, makes the rules. How do you explain that it took nine months before the State received any money in block grants and over two years before the City received any money other than funds to pick up debris and other smaller infrastructure projects. Also, don't forget that Richard Baker wanted another housing plan that was endorsed by every delegation member but President Bush said no. Instead, we received the road home plan. I have been critical of the implementation of that plan but don't forget that Louisiana received forty percent of the Katrina money while it had four times the damage of Mississippi. I give President Bush his due when it is due--as I am doing here, which I did not have to do. Coincidentally, it appears he might be doing what I wrote last night which is to trumpet New Orleans. But, the city needs much more than a meeting, or a trumpet, but, I am the first to be grateful that it is getting that and some attention by the President at the State of the Union. I also think that he got plenty of heat for his actions last year, and for the rebuild over the past few years. And while I believe that everyone had a role to play and failed in some way or another--consider this. New Orleans did not even have the money to broadcast to the evacuees its plan and to get input from them as to what type of neighborhood they wanted. It was not even funded by the Bush administration for input from those who lost everything. Meanwhile, the blanco administration at the same time had to cut the budget by one billion, so, if any one had money to make things happen, it was Washington. Yes, I believe in self help and that is what we are getting. That is what has been driving the rebuild, not much else. It has been the good people of New Orleans, the region and the state and the wonderful people outside of Louisiana who care enough for America and this region.

Steve, that egg on your face is very becoming! You had the panache to take note of our fearless leader's silence when he was silent, and you have noted his words when he has spoken. Is that not the mark of an honest man?
