Bill Jefferson Race: Louisiana and New Orleans Inside, Outside View

Authors details not listed at present
Many Louisiana voters might remember that bumper sticker from the Edwin Edwards and David Duke run-off for governor in 1991.   The cause was a good one – a corrupt governor versus an admitted KKK racist – pretty much a no-brainer.  Voting for the crook was less of an embarrassment.  Even those outside the Louisiana and New Orleans area agreed that a covert crook was better than a blatant racist.

You’d have thought we learned something from that one.  Not!  This is one time when most folks on the outside agree that re-electing William Jefferson to Congress is a bad idea and that we ought to be ashamed of ourselves if we send him back to Congress.  But, being an insider on the outside, I understand why we’ll most likely re-elect him to Congress and why sometime after December 2nd, we’ll spend a bunch more money holding a special election to send someone else to Congress.

As I looked over the commentary on blogs, news editorials and other information sources, I thought it was interesting that a couple of blog-posters suggested that the losing candidates should refrain from endorsing either Jefferson or Moreno in the election.   Makes perfect sense to me since they could all find themselves running again in the special election that is sure to come if Jefferson wins and is then convicted.  My inside sources say Jeff is sure to be sent back to Washington, as they are expecting one of the largest turnouts of African-American voters to support the candidacy of Barack Obama.

But, as an insider on the outside, it pains me to see my home city and state go through this.  I understand that we often vote along racial lines regardless of the quality of our political candidates.  I understand that we’ve done it this way for a long time.  But maybe, it’s time for us to really look at what being so set in our ways is doing to us.

Jefferson has all but lost all his clout in Congress, which in the past has often caused us to keep voting our less than honorable politicians back into office.   Whatever contracts or federal dollars he might have brought to the city and state as a result of his seniority will most likely go elsewhere or be dramatically reduced.    Whether he is innocent or guilty no longer matters, because the court of public opinion has already placed some strong judgments on him that will not only hinder his progress but that of the city and state.

Who wants to do business in a city or state where a project will cost two or three times more than budgeted because the politics necessary to get what’s needed must be bought? Yes, I know it goes on everywhere, but Louisiana seems to be the master.

Do we really want to do business with some company or individual who’s willing to buy-off our politicians at the expense of what’s in the best interest of residents?  What happens to the rights of the voters who sent that politician to Washington or Baton Rouge when they are sold to the highest bidder?

We can continue to turn a blind eye or we can pay attention and do something different that might actually be good for us.   This is one time when we shouldn’t vote for the crook – it’s important!

PS – Bravo to House Speaker Jim Tucker and other legislative leaders for stripping leadership duties from Representative John LaBruzzo for his inappropriate and backwards suggestion to offer voluntary sterilization to poor women.   Their recognition of the damage such an idea does to the reputation of the state throughout the world (yes, it made international headlines, too) is to be applauded.

Aimee, dear, on July 23rd we wrote the following comment which, although it dealt with another person we believe is just as appropriate to the Jefferson cases: "Race card folds in Barré case by Lolis Eric Elie in the Times Picayune shows the evil and badness of racism that has continued to cause the degredation of this city and, yes, this state, and this nation. Mr. Elie correctly poins out that the case was tried in the public as a racial issue, that people believed in that fact, that people were fooled and abused and used by many. Mr. Barre himself had to finally say: "The things I did to New Orleans and its taxpaying citizens were just as bad," he said. "This city trusted me, and I stabbed her in the back in the dead of night." Yes he stabbed all people regardless of their ancestry and he hurt himself and his family out of greed. We see the race card being unwisely used - it is time to take that dead horse and let it die peacfully. It is time to unite and to recognize the root causes of the poverty, the rising rate of illegitimacy, the rising rate of ignorance, etc.. Stop using the issue of racism as the cause. Racism occurs in many ways and involves intolerance in many instances by people of various ancestries. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Statistics show that people are often elected not based on their qualification but on their ancestries. That is stupid and evil for this city, this state, this nation. We see this in the coming election for President. What make Obama black? The fact that his father was from Africa? Does not the fact that his mother was of European ancestry make him white? Stop using this distinction, citizens of this nation, this state, this city. Start chosing leaders based on abilities, qualification, determination, their personal attempts to improve the lives of all. Don't rely on slogans, don't rely on promises made in campaigns. Rely on the character and ability of the candidate. FOR ONCE AND FOR ALL, STAND UNITED AS A NATION, PLEDGE TO JUSTICE AND EQUALITY FOR ALL!!!!! Thank you, Mr. Elie, for standing up as a man of justice and determination and making a statement that has long been coming but now should be the standard used by all citizens of this community, this state, and this nation."

What is this "when WE re-elect Jefferson"? Tell it to the African Americans.

I remember a man that I had great respect for, as well as an out and out duty bound obligation and faith in……. 1 Bronze Star, 2 Purple hearts, 3 tours of duty (one year each) in the rice fields……. One day he took me to the side and said “Son, if you ever find yourself in a foxhole with a gook and your position is being overrun by Charlie you shoot the gook in the head… Do you understand me?” Now there were two possible reasons for this advice to have been given, (actually three if you consider that there was an absolute level of concern being displayed toward myself by a superior in the field) and I carefully weighed them before answering “Yes sir, to the farthest extent of my abilities I will never allow my position to be compromised or overrun”. Read into that what you want, because I am fairly sure that the majority of you won’t possibly be able to comprehend the value of it…….

That the voters can be so deliberately stupid and ignorant as to vote for this obvious and blatant crook is stunning and disgraceful. This will give this area yet another black eye and further enhance Louisiana's image as the laughing stock of the entire nation. These voters who voted for "Dollar Bill" have shamed the rest of us in the eyes of the rest of the country. If stupidity and ignorance could be measured in dollars, the democratic voters of the 2nd congressional district are by far the richest on earth!
