Breaking Louisiana, New Orleans News: William Jefferson Vs. Helena Moreno

Written by: Stephen Sabludowsky

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

Breaking News:  It’s Helena Moreno versus William “Bill” Jefferson.

A former newswoman versus a man who has been making national news;  A new political face versus a traditional political machine.

A “new” New Orleans born out of Katrina versus a wise but tainted name due to a federal criminal matter that started before Katrina.

Helena Moreno and Bill Jefferson, respectively, have their work cut out over the next month.  The Congressional District is predominately African American and Moreno beat out a spirited group of five other black competitors.  She will need much of their support to defeat a man who is scheduled to face major criminal charges but who wins elections despite the odds.

Included in the Jefferson and Moreno runoff mix will be the Presidential battle, a Louisiana US Senate race and numerous runoffs from Saturday night’s elections.

Overall, Jefferson carried over 25 percent of the approximate 67,000 voters in the 2nd Congressional District election.  The question is which candidate can pull from the approximate 55 percent of the voters who did not pick Jefferson or Moreno and those other voters who might hit the polls to vote in an contest that includes the first African American Presidential official party nominee.

For many, it was a big surprise that Jefferson did so well in an election so close to his criminal trial and against a strong pack of competitors.

Round one is now over.  The upcoming election pits a young woman, new to politics who has made a career of breaking news but who is now competing against the well-tested brand in a city which has brought out the sympathy and even the anger of many throughout the nation who see New Orleans as their own cross to bear since Katrina.  Many can barely wait to see how this story plays out next month under a new set of political circumstances.

The way I understand is... ALL of our problems were caused by George W. Bush and the Republicans... once the Democrats are in real change will come and all will be okay.... so I'm told.... (but I suspect that won't be the case). The good thing is instead of having a political party controlled by the banking interests who stand as champions of free markets and the working middle class (both lies of course) we will have a party controlled by the banking interests who stand as champions for the poor and disenfranchised (sorry Charlie, those are liees as well). That is "change"... some what.

Good points there Kerry...... Fairness and compassion harnessed with sober conviction is always a desirable position or state of being to strive for..... The problems we have right now, the 'Brick Wall' of economic reality, although set in the path, is easy enough to crash through, or go around......... It would only take very few common sense implementations to get things on a more even keel... Oh, I lied, actually it would take quite a few.... And the economic realities are that the productivity and potentials of America are going to become seriously eroded to an even farther extent if not out and out hobbled by this Obama prop getting into office..... He is an implant.... Much like Jindal.... The Republican and the Democratic party is responsible for this....... They know not what absolute hell they are forging at this very moment at the expense of all that is noble and good...... 500 years ago, America was but a dream that was not even cognitively desired by the common masses.... It's manifestation is a miracle, and its demise will be the most unfortunate event in the annals of human history... Once gone, it will never be known again.... So fragile, so unique, yet so strong, so vibrant, and all so easily discarded when appreciated no more…. Who is going to reinstall it? The slackers? The moochers? The ingrates? The lazy? The incompetent? The cowardly? The bully? The user? The malcontent? Who out there will rise to the occasion and help preserve this great nation and the ideals for which it was founded? Or are we just going to sell ourselves off to the Chinese, and look towards a socialist government to tell us how we are going to be happy, or content? Who dares to impose limits on what we as an individual should not only be allowed to, but advocated to pursue? And who dumbed America down to the point that it doesn’t even have the common sense to appreciate the value of self reliance??????

The Democrats...I do not hate these people, I support their social causes while abhorring their socialist meddling in the market. Spare me the extreme horror stories about children working for pennies a day in unsafe work environments. Yes, it's good to have minimum wage, OSHA, Social Security and other programs to keep the wealthy from being tyrannical. The problem as I see it is "one can go too far." Case in point "hey, let's encourage our lending institutions to make loans so that the disenfranchised can move into home ownership." Gosh, how noble! The problem is that although completely unregulated capitalism may be undesirable, too much social engineering (in this case, there being no consequences for making loans to those who cannot pay them back) can have severe economic consequences. Too much given to the many "needy" people can be a burden on those who work to pay for these "gifts" from the socialists in power. I look at politics as being analogous to driving down a Louisiana highway. One does not want to go too far to the left or to the right. Do not think that there have not been Democratic initiatives that have had serious economic consequences. Do not think that the lobbyists from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac did not donate HUGH sums of money to BOTH parties and that this "bailout" (excuuuuusssse me, I mean "rescue") is nothing more than political payback. I most certainly do not believe the people of this country will benefit from the bailout, nor do I believe that the blame for our economic mess lies exclusively with either party. We the people have an unrealistic outlook on just what we can afford as individuals and in terms of what government can provide. This "crash" in the worldwide economy may be nothing more than a brick wall called "economic reality."

Both y'all have absolutely no sense of reality..... It all starts with moronic Louisiana opinion, specifically a Louisiana law of 1890, upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in Plessy v. Ferguson, the "SEPARATE but equal" clause.... Repeal this 14th amendment, and cause some modernization (no I didn't say moderation) language to be evident and the problems will dissapear overnight.... People will have a firm grasp on the what is what of matters.... And as far as riots go? Bring them on, this ain't no Nat Turner clause (ha-ha-pun on cause) and when it comes time to putting down a rabid dawg, most folks won't pause........ Time to get on with ABC instead of the Wuts innit fer me mentality.......

Kerry, why would you expect Obama and the Democrats to "gut the economy?" That makes no sense at all. Has the record of the GOP been so wonderful? We're in the toilet as it stands now. Cripes, they've practically destroyed us on every front. TW

While crossing the Causeway I listened to WBOK's "Talk Black/Talk Back" yesterday about Bill Jefferson - I was glad to see that not all N.O. black voters are paranoid and ignorant; thankfully some are not. Hopefully with Obama in office there will be a greater sense of "us together" in many black people's minds instead of the "us vs. them" mentality that prevails. I do not claim to be a mind reader but listening to black talk shows such as this one reveals how much hatred and distrust there is out there amongst blacks as well as whites. Also, if Obama and the Dems gut our economy perhaps that will inspire the Republicans to change and become the party of the middle class - if so, yet another reason to vote Democrat.

Tee, those undereducated whites must have come from Appalachia to take advantage of the golden opportunities down here in Sportsman's Paradise. Because in your book, the poor and uneducated in our population have to be black or from Appalachia. And if those people wised up and left, you'd be awfully outnumbered here in New Haiti. But I suppose you'd still find a way to blame the other 49 states for the plight of this disgrace to democracy. And even after I move out, I'll still drop in to bayoubuzz to check on you. Just in case I have second thoughts about leaving!!

i will vote for obama because he's getting off the backs of the mafia by killing oversight of teamsters, getting off the backs of criminal thugs by killing mandatory min sentencing for violent criminals, and is getting off the backs of terrorists by gutting the military.

But here's the thing - I see "conservative" / "family values" / "states' rights" types who take advantage of undereducated white people all the time. I see corrupt politicians who represent these unthinking masses, such as Eddie Price, Jay Blossman, Judge Darrell White, "Woody" Jenkins, or David Duke. If the "White Flight" that you speak of only included them, then we'd be better off in Louisiana, for sure. So please go, Oinker - go someplace else where you can whine about "socialism" and "high taxes" and "lazy black people" and where (hopefully) I won't have to read your poorly-reasoned, racism-laced diatribes that reveal just what an ignorant waste of human flesh you are. Au re'oir, et laisse pas la porte te frapper dessus le go-go quand t'es après partir! TW

Tee Dub, Bill Jefferson is a symptom, not the problem. He'll go to jail or die someday, and there will be another pandering populist waiting to take advantage of the ignorant black voters and the disgrace will continue. If Jefferson had been defeated or jailed, with or without Harry Lee's help, another black vulture of a politician would be well on his way to building his own corrupt, criminal enterprises at the expense of the ignorant black voters who will continue to elect them. Let's quit postponing the inevitable, put white flight into high gear, and leave Louisiana to the black voters and their socialist allies. Get the racist whites out of their way and let these enlightened black voters solve their problems without the interference and sabotage from republicans and conservatives. American Haiti, What a glorious place it would be?!?!?!

I'll vote for Obama for two reasons 1) Ron Paul is no longer in the race and 2) the Republicans sell out the middle class for the wealthy. Perhaps after the Democrats run rampant in D.C. for a while the Republican Party will start to represent the middle class.

Nolaboy, kpf may be a lot of things, but he is not stupid. And it's not that he agrees with me; he and I disagree all the friggin' time! And you NEVER answered my earlier question, so I'll ask it again. Hopefully this time you'll be take the time to respond! My question is this - DID YOU VOTE FOR MITCH LANDRIEU FOR MAYOR? Nagin would not have been elected were it not from support from white conservatives. You wouldn't believe the conservative tripe pro-Nagin, anti-Landrieu fliers I got because I happen to live in a majority-white, pretty conservative New Orleans neighborhood. And as for you racist pigs out there, need I remind you that had white voters in Jefferson Parish not sat on their hands two years ago because the late Harry Lee asked them to, then "Dollar Bill" would be enjoying a pre-penitentiary retirement right now. So answer my question. Droit asteur, comme ça dit en le français 'Cadien! TW

KPF, Your STUPIDITY is the reason why people like Bill Jefferson, Marc Morial, Sherman Copeland, Dorthy Mae Taylor, and other like them got elected in the first place. Way to go! Vote for Obama because he is black not because of his qualifications.

Many black voters do not trust government and feel Bill Jefferson represents their interests in a way no white person would. The main reason I am voting for Obama is to help give black Americans a sense of belonging and to trust that their fellow Americans include, value and trust them. I truly believe most white Americans have "gotten beyond" the "racial thing" and that although many black voters do not trust white politicians this too will change over time. When that day comes a crook like Bill Jefferson will not have a chance to hold office.

Steve, you're SURPRISED that Bill Jefferson made the run off? How long have you lived here? You must be as naive as Moreno. Let me give you a big news flash. Jefferson will EASILY win on November 4 and in December. Don't be surprised, just be prepared.

Handwriting, you have it nailed. LA population is over 30% black, and those in Jefferson's district are typical of their voting prejudices. Get a list of state demographics by population. There are lots of beautiful states with black populations in single digits or even below 1%. If you want to raise your family in an environment free of the William Jeffersons, then take advantage of the opportunities to escape and leave this state to the ignorant populists. Unfortunately, everyone in this nation is subjected the corruption that is Bill Jefferson once he's seated in Washington. But you don't have to live among the ignorant voters who elect him and his kind. Louisiana becoming an American Haiti is just step 1, then next step will be an American Somalia.

Another term for Dollar Bill. There is no way in hell that black voters will elect a white in that district. But that district has been an embarrassment for years anyway, so why worry?? Because this illustrates exactly why the black population has no future. Their voting power, ignorance, and resentment assures that they will continue to elect pandering crooks (white and black) who have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo. And as more districts in this dying state obtain black voting majorities, the cancer will spread. It's been time to abandon New Orleans for years, now it's time to abandon Louisiana, the American Haiti.

How can the people of this city give support to a man under investigation for such a list of criminal activity (as well as family). It has nothing to with race but with honesty. That is why this state, especially South Louisiana has such a bad reputation with the rest of the country. The country is laughing at us right now.

Crap, dear, in other words you were hoping for the run off to be between two people, both Americans of African ancestry. That in and of itself is discrimination. You were discriminating against individuals who were of other ancestries and in the case against a woman. Now is the time for the entire community to join forces and elect the best of the two candidates and show this nation what the U.S.A. is all about - justice and equality for all. Now, let's all join forces in acomplishing this.

I was hoping that the black majority would have a choice between a black person without $90,000 of marked FBI bribe money in his freezer and one without. I was hoping the black people would vote against the theif. BUT NOW??? Now we will have to expect black people to vote against a theif who is also black. Won't happen. WE WILL, ONCE AGAIN, BE AN EMBARRASSMENT TO THE WORLD. WHY WOULD PEOPLE GIVE LOUISANA MONEY TO REBUILD WHEN WE OPENLY SUPPORT CRIMINALS???????????
