Democrat Fortunes Shaky For Louisiana November Elections

Written by: BayouBuzz Staff

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

Despite some overly-cheery conjecturing by the pollster, a poll for a private group that tacked on a few questions about upcoming political contests provided some guarded, bad, and terrible news for Democrats likely subject to Louisiana statewide votes in November.

The Southern Media Opinion and Research poll taken about two weeks ago gave most hope to Sen. Mary Landrieu, running for reelection against heavyweight Republican challenger state Treas. John Kennedy. She led him 50-38 percent, any number below 50 percent meaning, because if an incumbent more than six months out from an election cannot draw at least that, she would be in serious trouble.

As it is, she’s only in mild trouble. With so few people tuned into the contest at this point with almost no advertising concerning it, some respondents will give an incumbent’s name simply out of familiarity, and some undecided voters, not really knowing about the competitor but leaning against the incumbent, will end up breaking against her later. Thus, her support is overstated at this point and if it drifts downwards even a little, she becomes unlikely to repeat in office. Stating “It means the voters obviously have a very high regard for her as their U.S. senator,” and “She is going to be tough to beat because she is so well-thought of,” as does the pollster shows little real understanding of what these head-to-head numbers actually mean

But that’s a better situation that Sen. Hillary Clinton faces in winning the state as a presidential candidate. She polled down 49-42 percent to Republican Sen. John McCain, apparent GOP nominee. Apparently, the only one surprised by this is the pollster, who marvels, “I don't know that she would carry Louisiana, but McCain would certainly have to come in here and campaign to win it. It's certainly not a cinch.”

In reality, Clinton has little chance of winning. She always will draw respectable numbers in Louisiana – recall that her husband won the state twice – because there are yellow-dog Clintonites who would vote for anything associated with the 42nd president. But she does not have his political skills or has had his good policy luck or the audacity to take credit for good GOP policy initiatives that got him to fool enough non-liberals to win here. Expect a bare modicum of campaigning regardless of who gets nominated; she would probably end up at least seven points down if she wins the nomination.

The 15 percent gap to McCain for Sen. Barack Obama, however, got the pollster to stop blowing Democrat sunshine up our skirts and instead got him musing about voter intentions – without actually making any enlightening observations. Noting that while a little more than a quarter of whites said they’d support Clinton against McCain while just over a seventh would support Obama in that matchup, he concluded, “Race is obviously entering into the extremely poor numbers he's receiving from white voters.”

I’d hate to see what this surveyor would term as not obvious, for racial attitudes probably play just a small part in that difference (additional questions that could determine some of these things seemed not to have been asked). It’s not “race,” but the facts that Obama thinks people of faith don’t worship God but “cling” to belief, that until very recently his wife never had any pride in her country America, and that by continued patronage and active participation in a church by him and his entire family he endorses the ideas behind the ranting of a minister who calls on God to condemn America and who tells his congregation about how evil America run by whites is, including how they foisted genocide by inventing AIDS and got paid back by 9/11. The problem for the white Louisiana electorate is not that Obama is black, it’s that Obama has Obama’s belief system, as much as he tries to obscure it, which is profoundly out of step with its own.

The best summary of this poll is that, if you’re a Democrat who spends most of your time outside of Louisiana, your chances of winning a statewide election are at best fair, and at worst none.

PIYUSH BUZZ!!!!!!! PIYUSH ALERT!!!!!!.. Well, I have to hand to Piyush and his Krewe, and give them a resounding 'GOOD SHOW OLD BOYS!!!! PIP-PIP and all that BALDERDASH.........'. It would appear that Piyush is challenging the N.O. district Army Corp of Engineers S.O.P. by requesting that particular district answer directly to Washington D.C. instead of Vicksburg.... WELL DONE.... I HOPE THEM SUCCESS.. This is an example of the people wresting control away from inefficient and bungling governmental bureaucracies and taking it back into their (our) own hands... I hope them success in this endeavor…. Sort of goes along with previous contemplations on this subject, and it is amazing what can happen when politicians are behooved to do what is expeditious…….

Geeeee, Rhetts Wife, my dearest of dears, when you write; """""One more thing - you can always make your points known on our forum. However, we congratulate Bayou Buzz for its open door policy. ONWARD, DEARS.""""""" Are you implying that there has been some kind of CHANGE in attitude or something..... My oh my, how democratic of ya’ll (I think?).......................... Oh, and the McCain thing, well, I would tend to agree with you on that, bearing in mind that he isn't the best but then again he isn't the worst either........ He is human, subject to all the whims and ailments mortal man is composed of...... but then again, so is Piyush......... I would hope that some form of common sense can prevail as they fill their assumptive roles relegated as being a position of leadership..............

Sorry, we hit the wrong button before. Take polls for what they are. Use some sense and common logic and you can estimate who the winner will be. Learn from history and regardless of improvement in poll taking, there are always those who will deliberately lie. Now we are saying this again, GAIN WITH MC CAIN. Yes, dears, that more mature gentlemen has earned his stripes and will make this nation whole. We can no longer allow division to stop us and it continues to do so. UNITE BEHIND MC CAIN. One more thing - you can always make your points known on our forum. However, we congratulate Bayou Buzz for its open door policy. ONWARD, DEARS.

There you go again, using professor and productivity in the same sentence. Don't we all agree that dollars spent IS the accepted measure of productivity in academia? Therefore, if we pay Sadow more, he'll be more productive by definition.

Ehhhhh,,,,,,,,,,, all McCain has to do is promise mo dollahs fo Louisiana an da establishment will roll out the red carpet fo him...... It doesn't take the planting of false rumors that our Gov is being 'considered' as V.P. material to achieve that. So the subject of Brock O'Bananarama and Hillariously Squint'em is pretty much a moot point. In much the same light as the observations and numbers posted in the above article are. But what can we expect from the cub reporters on the Bayou Buzz staff anyways? During their spare time they are busy buzzing back with comments to bolster their tepid stories anyways, so where is the integrety? But back to the muse about V.P. material, hmmmmmm,,,,, well, the reason why this isn't being 'contemplated', or at least according to a couple of 'beer tasting' pals of mine that like to spend their summers in Sedona, it is sort of like a Mit Romney thing..... Sure there are plenty of 'suitable' players out there, but like a good suit, McCain is considering those that will fit him best.................. One of the fits he is looking for is a person that has realistic plans to make things work, I mean after all, McCain can't do everything by himself now can he? Now take Piyush for example......... It sort of falls back to HR. 6111.......... You know, that bill that gives Louisiana 'exclusive' rights to royalties in offshore federal waters........ The key word here is FEDERAL waters. In other words, those resources belong to ALL the states..... Well, what is happening right now? SURPRISE! SURPRISE! SURPRISE! No it isn't inflation, it isn't recession, it is however the front porch at the doorway of depression we are now standing on. And the future of costal restoration is fairly well heavily dependent upon funding from those royalty revenues. Now enter Bear Sterns..... I have had numerous dealings with that firm over the years, it came as no surprise what happened, and the following windfall effect that occured on the NYSE. It was quite predictable actually...... BUT now more rules are being put into effect at investment firms to make sure this type of thing is sort of restrained from happening again....... Ahhhh,,,,,, Well, unlike the tobacco settlements that were sold off at, I don't know exactly, but it would be resonable to assume somewhere around 30 to 50 cents on the dollar, the approach is not going to be available when royalties are considered for offer or sale. Why? Well, H.R. 6111 is merely a treaty that was tacked on the tail of a medicare treaty with a few more bells and whistles. So what is another issue being considered now? Health care reform!!!!!!!!!! Ahhhhhh,,, and plenty of Indians can tell you how the man that gathers beneath the great white stone teepee in D.C. likes to break treaties..... And that is all that bill is....... What is legal one day is illegal the next only to become legal again later on and be in question a year later...... Look at prohibition.... Boy I like talking to people who 'taste beer' for a living, they are so enlightening.... So in other words, funding for coastal restoration, which is expected in what 5 - 10 years stands a real good chance of getting stopped cold in its tracks..... The possiblility of selling royaltys? Welllll,,,,,,,,,,, let's just wait on judgement of that until we see the new SEC rulings that are going to be contemplated and additional bills tendered on the house floor. No, I think McCain has a strong appreciation for missions that accomplish the objective...... I am sure he spent many hours on his pallet on the floor thinking about missions and objectives.. Solitude has a way of causing a man to do things like that sometimes.

Hey everyone - a couple of things - first of all, poboy1 is right, I shouldn't shoot the messenger, and I know better than that - it's just that sometimes, I can't help myself. In response to another poster, I know a thing or two about academia, and I can assure you that the Sadow's lack of promotion to full professor has nothing to do with budget cuts, and everything to do with his lack of productivity. Finally, I'm not convinced Obama will lose Louisiana - I think the right-wing underestimates just how much damage George Bush has done to the GOP. The percentage of folks who have been fooled by his smoke-and-mirrors and faux-patriotism keeps dropping and dropping and dropping. "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain" is eventually doomed to failure. TW

Mr. Dub, Before you belitte Mr. Sadow and his status at the university, consider your other positions regarding the selfish taxpayers who refuse to fund universities well enough to promote all professors to their rightful place of honor. Remember that money spent is the prime indicator of the quality of an institution of higher education. Please find out if Mr. Sadow is a victim of taxpayer selfishness before you you ridicule him for failing to achieve the holy grail of full professorship.

Obama will not lose Louisiana because of the color of his skin. He will lose it because he is a flaming liberal with a socialist agenda, and now it seems, with recent remarks in San Francisco, he is also a condescending elitist. He is the ultimate fulfillment of modern liberalism. Like it or not, Mr Sadow is more on the mark about the fate of Democrats in Louisiana than some of you think.

Have you people forgotten the lessons taught by these forums? Blacks are justified in their race-based (not racist) block voting because they share a common heritage of slavery, oppression, exploitation, and denial of opportunity. And by bayoubuzz poster definition, only those in power (whites) can be racists. So therefore, any weakness in poll numbers for Obama are indisputable proof of continuing white bigotry, regardless of his campaign or his policies. And to further clarify the racism index, the greater the difference between black support and white support for a candidate, the more racist the white voters are.

C'mon guys and gals, this piece wasn't that bad unless you're a democrat. It is what it is, Obama is a smoke and mirrors kinda guy. No one knows where he stands because he has no history, just a smooth delivery. And I grant you this, alot of folks will not vote for him because he is dark skinned...remember Jindal during his first run for Guv? I am a Catholic and John hagee doesn't bother me a bit, I've read three of his books and found them interesting. He and Rev. Wright are not in the same classification. Mr. Wright has spewed racism for years and Obama apparently wasn't paying attention until just recently?? Sorry, don't buy it.

As a person generally considered White and as a voter, I find Mr. Sadow annoying. It seems to me that the statistics he quotes are more understandable if we hypothesize aroused racist hostility than if we hypothesize patriotic defensiveness, as he does. There are lots of people who believe that the US was being paid back on September 11, 2001, for what the government of this country had done around the world since World War II. To be sure, our army was heroic in that war, but in the military adventures since then our army has been misled into service as corporation mercenaries. As the son of an Army officer, I find that sad to watch, and I am as angry as Sen. Obama's minister that the government has killed, conquered, and maimed, using my money and pretending that it was for ''freedom''. If Obama cannot win Louisiana, it will be because of the color of his skin.

I imagine Obama will get a larger percentage of the white vote than McCain will get from black voters. Is not this racist as well? I mean, if one votes STRICTLY based on skin color, it is the very same thing regardless of what color that skin may be, is it not? I anxiously await the illogical explanations from those who think it is not.

I can't believe that a professor, even one so obviously right-wing, could possibly believe that the lack of white support for Obama is not substantially based upon his race. Wake up, Prof. This is the South and this is Louisiana!!

I know y'all think I think everyone is an idiot, but this Sadow guy takes the cake. In the land of idiots, this guy is king. A lot of you call Stephen's (and even some of Jeff's) pieces "hatchet jobs" - but this piece really is one. I love his links to tawdry "facts" about Obama - and his carefully constructed argument as to how "out of step" he (Obama) is with the electorate. And of course, one must keep mentioning the Reverend Wright, but there's no mention of McCain's coddling of right-wing religious nuts like the anti-Catholic bigot Reverend John Hagee. But, as I've said before, what do you expect from a permanent Associate Professor who can't even get promoted to Full Professor at a third tier university? I know that that's a string of ad hominem arguments, and I apologize in advance for stooping to them, but this guy really, really, annoys me. Plus you can't comment on his web page posts unless you're a registered user - we wouldn't want any contrarian views slipping in now, would we? At least here on BayouBuzz, everyone is allowed his or her say! TW
