Does Bardwell Incident Show Louisiana Politics Is Still Land Of David Duke?

Written by: Stephen Sabludowsky

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

“In 21st century Louisiana, racism is in your face and coursing just below the surface, and it shrouds the state by way of history, practice and a hardened tolerance for the old ways. Never mind that it's been 42 years since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that state bans on interracial marriage are unconstitutional. This is Louisiana.”  The Town Talk

The Justice of the Peace interracial marriage-Bardwell story has become the national talk of the town.  Even Governor Bobby Jindal expressed his frustration.  According to one report, “saying the nine-member Louisiana Judiciary Commission that reviews lawyers and judges in the state should investigate. Jindal added, "Disciplinary action should be taken immediately, including the revoking of his license."

However, at this time, we are not certain that the Judiciary Commission will take up the case.  If they don’t, there would likely not be any action against this Justice since Louisiana law appears not to require the Justice of the Peace to marry any couples.

Yet, to date, although Mary Landrieu and Bobby Jindal have spoken out against Bardwell, the Louisiana Democratic Party, the Louisiana Republican Party, Senator David Vitter and his opponent Charlie Melancon have not issued any statements.

Which says quite a lot and we can only guess the reasons for their swallowed- tongues.

Perhaps the parties are too afraid to upset the racists operating below the surface.  Maybe the candidates are quick to bash one another on matters of minutia, but when it comes to an issue that has received national attention and has stoked the outrage in many, they go mute.

Then, again, this is the land of David Duke where the sheets are racism obviously reign.

Speaking of Duke, according to the official website of “Representative David Duke, Phd”, Dr. Duke allowed this to be part of the main story on the issue:

Needless to say, there will be a huge outcry to fire this judge. A swarm of Jewish lawyers will instantly appear to file lawsuits against him. There may even be criminal Federal civil rights charges that some Leftist commissar will dream up. After all, how dare this judge suggest that interracial marriages don’t last. After all, that’s the sort of union that produced Barack Obama. Never mind the fact that Barack’s parents conceived him before the marriage and their marriage only lasted a couple years.

It’s true that interracial relationships don’t last. Usually the White woman winds up viciously battered looking like Rihanna, after Chris Brown got through with her. Every few weeks another OJ-style story leaks into the press about a White woman getting murdered by a black who got a little too jealous or crazy. Unfortunately, the Jewish media doesn’t focus on these stories.”

Duke’s website is full of anti-Semitic rantings and yes, despite his former protestations to the contrary, one look at his site shows he is still trying to profit from hate, anti-Semitism and racism.

Then, in a very cynical and despicable way, at least his site made a statement about the issue.  Our fearless political leaders, namely the Louisiana Republicans, Democrats, candidates Melancon and Vitter have remained dormant as a mouse.

This shows what type of meek leadership we might be able to expect from our state parties and from our US Senate candidates.  When an issue rocks the world there is not a squeak from our own political representatives.  Call me suspicious, but, when it comes down to the nitty gritty, policy for these guys appear to be all about winning and not offending the voters, who could very well be former Duke voters in this very backwards state.    And the hardened tolerance keeps tolerating, yet, these political leaders urge us to give them our money for their political causes?  Hopefully, this incident shows that for them principal has taken a back seat to expediency.    If this absence of outrage is the sign of Louisiana leadership, perhaps we should just face it.  Racism is live in Louisiana and is embedded in the institutions of our political advocacies.

He did break the law and even in the land of David Duke equal rights is for everyone. If he wants to refuse to marry them he should resign but as a public official he is required by federal law to treat everyone equally. Now I do not mind racist people if they will admit they are racist but to act like this is normal and lawful is pile a horse manure. Now if this is truly Legal why has it sent Senator Vittor into hiding again. This make about the fourth time Vitter has run from the media in the last year.

The majority of americans elected president Obama and still support him, because while all may not agree with everything he is doing at least he is stepping forward and leading. Now Vitter hiding from the media once again, and is not leading but is more like a thief hiding in the night. How can you lead any group when you run away from the media on something as important as equal rights.Even Governor Jindal was man enough to come out and speak on this. What and why is Senator Vitter hiding or is he just unable to stand up like a real leader ? Senator Vitter has proven he has habit of calling on others to speak out and even step down and yet Senator Vitter runs and hides from the media once again. Try reading more slowly, maybe you'll quit making such ridiculous leaps. When conservatives complain about Obama's agenda and the legislation he's pushing, you liberal democrats (and those deep-thinking liberal independents) all point to the fact that Obama won the presidency, and is therefore mandated to deliver on his campaign rhetoric (in spite of the fact that a large percentage of Americans vehemently oppose him and his ideas). How is that "representing all of the people." The answer: it's not. It's representing what he stands for and what (he claims) that the majority of people want. Vitter is doing exactly the same thing. He is promoting the agenda that he was promoting when the majority of Louisianians elected him. He cannot represent the interest of his voters and fulfill the selfish and doomed to failure wishes of his opponents at the same time. If democrats could ever develop a policy that promoted their constituency without taking it from the pockets of others, then maybe someone could represent the interests and advancement of all Americans.

Vitter does represent everyone in Louisiana. But a large percentage of Louisianians are too attached to dependency and entitlements to know what's in their own best interest. And their own "leaders" are perpetuating their dysfunction for political, monetary and egotistical gain. Is Harry Reid representing all of America in his position? Is Nancy Pelosi representing all Americans? Spin that how you want, but the answer is Hell No. Mary Landrieu isn't representing all of Louisiana regardless of her fence-sitting, power-protecting doubletalk. William Jefferson didn't represent the white people in his district.

I do not believe Vitter is a racist but it sounds like you are. The law states all people are to be treated equal but you seem to think that Vitter does not need to follow the law. Yes, Vitter does indeed have a role in this discussion. It is a national issue, just check the national debate in the media. The GOP and the Democratic parties are always asking the leaders of the opposite party to speak out. It defines the elected officials. Vitter could make this a totally national issue with legislation. It is a commerce issue using the commerce clause. I personally think that Vitter is showing himself as being very racially insensitive. Race is an issue in this election. Race was in issue in Katrina, in getting money for the city of New Orleans, in reapportionment, in every aspect of the roles of our elected officials. he could introduce laws as he has with ACORN, immigration-racial issues. Anybody who thinks that race is not an issue in the election or in our society or in our governing has their hand in the sand. David Vitter has explaining to do. He is the one who has engaged in race baiting with ACORN, immigration. Those things bring out the worse in people. He is deliberately playing to their anti-black and anti-Hispanic emotions. Why doesn't he try to get this state more money for recovery. No, he is drafting legislation that is anti-black, anti-Hispanic every chance he can. He could file legislation that would make the marrying issue a federal issue and not a state issue if the Justice of the Peace had discretion. It is he who is race-baiting. The fact that he remains unclear on what he meant shows cowardice. Louisiana looks terrible. Vitter if he wants to represent Louisiana should take a stand.

You can't just pick and choose your warm fuzzy equal rights. I have no problem with the marriage of this couple. Blackwell should quit the job if he doesn't like some of the duties he is asked to perform. But he doesn't HAVE to quit the job, because the law says that he can decide whether or not to conduct marriage ceremonies. If you want to fix the law to force his hand, go ahead. But David Vitter has no role in that fix, and the only reason his name has come up in this argument is because of typical democratic party race-baiting. If you want to use Vitter's position on federal legislation as a race sensitive litmus test, have at it. But attempting to pin down Vitter on this matter is run-of-the mill Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, NAACP BS.

Your assertion that anything Obama says will be taken as socialist because of his skin color is absurd. Ignoring important issues and denigrating a group by the actions of a few is certainly how "small minds" engage in public debate. Claiming that Louisiana - in general - is "racist" because "some" citizens in Louisiana are racist is no different than claiming that blacks are violent - in general - due to the violence committed by "some" blacks. It is a stupid argument due to the fact that it is adopting the very same thought process ("some do it, therefore all are guilty") that has not only allowed racism to endure but has also led to genocide (including the black-on-black horror in Rwanda). So while denigrating the actions of THE ONE INDIVIDUAL who is actually GUILTY of something, denigrating all those INDIVIDUALS who are "similar" and claiming they too are guilty is how small minds process information, be that racist whites, racist blacks, or those who think all who disagree with their beliefs are as ignorant, intolerant and violent as the fringe elements of those who have opposing beliefs. When people denigrate ALL those who are "different" from them (be that difference political, skin color, whatever) they are adopting the mindset of Hitler, Duke, and any other "we are good / they are bad" haters; same thought process, just different reasons from what the Nazis had.

To quote from Cajun Tsunamai: "The last word and decision will be made by St. Peter when he decides who is worthy of entering the Golden Gates!" Forgive my ignorance, but I was always led to believe that the gates to Heaven were "Pearly," not Golden. Golden Gates will only get you as far as San Francisco. But, then again, as Tony Bennett sang, if the cable cars there "climb halfway to the stars" maybe San Francisco isn't such a bad place to start. At least you're "halfway" there: what you do to get the rest of the way there is up to you. Just thought I'd inject a little humor into this otherwise not-so-funny debate.

Duke received alot of racist votes when he ran for public office, but he also garnered alot of protest votes against the staus quo. He was a good politician though, because he hide his spots well and spoke eloquently...not as good as President Obama though. Regardless of what we think and feel, the JOP did not have to marry the couple. Instead of jumping on the band wagon and demanding he resign, Jindal would have done better to make a brief statement congratulating the couple on finding another JOP and wishing them a happy married life.

So Racism is just for small minds? Where is your brain? Then, Bobby Jindal spoke out against the JP and not for or against bringing the troops home. I guess he has a small mind.

Racism and sexual exploits, good for occupying small minds I guess. Yesterday Lou Dobbs had a panel on CNN discussing whether we should bring our troops home - not just from Afghanistan and Iraq - but from all over the globe. That is the kind of political discussion that one is fortunate to find, rare as it is.

Louisiana is Racist BIG TIME...... That's why David Duke...KKK won the white vote over Edwards....... That's why.....President Obama received only 17 % of Louisiana's white vote...... So much for Louisiana's White Hypocritical Christians............ Submitted by a white Cajun who is very ashamed ot the above facts. But who am I to judge? You proclaim Mary Landrieu a hero because she made a statement regarding the justice of Pease not marrying the couple. Do you really think if she was up for re-election next year she would have come out and made a statement? If so, beware of the guys selling the Brooklyn Bridge.

As a slight follow-up since this issue has come up, Duke also received 55% of the white vote against Edwards in the race for Governor. That meant, he received approximately 670,000 votes in total. I find it interesting that the national media is speaking out against Bardwell yet here in sleepy Louisiana, some of us don't want to stir up the masses when it comes to issues that is unconsionable to most of the rest of the world but plays well in Louisiana. I guess, so goes Louisiana politics.

Charlie, David Duke did not just win one House Rep. election. First, he still goes by the name Representative David Duke. Check his website. Second, in the US Senate race against Bennett Johnston, he received over 60 percent of the white vote. Over 600,000 people voted for him and I would venture to same that almost all of them were white. Sixty percent of the vote, that says a lot about this state. It is not self-flagellation, it is part of our recent history. By the way, I received a copy of a email that was sent out yesterday by the Louisiana Democratic Party. I normally receive all of the press releases from the Louisiana GOP and Democratic Party. Since I wrote a similar column yesterday, I would expect that they would want me to receive this statement. I did not receive it but they apparently did send it. For the record, this was sent Monday afternoon: Today, Louisiana Democratic Party Chair Chris Whittington released the following statement on Tangipahoa Justice of the Peace Keith Bardwell's refusal to resign after admitting that he denied a marriage license to a couple because they were of different races. "There is no room in today’s Louisiana for Keith Bardwell. As a public official, Bardwell has sworn to uphold the laws of Louisiana and the Constitution of the United States and his actions likely violate both. He needs to go. "It is unfortunate that Keith Bardwell has said he will not resign. The Louisiana Democratic Party is exploring all legal options to have Mr. Bardwell removed from office. We will not sit idly by while this injustice continues.”

"Louisana David Dukeland" I am not sure how long you have lived here Steve, but we answered that question TWICE in the early 1990's. He ran in two statewide elections(Senate and Governor) and lost both times.

Racism is alive and well in Louisiana and the GOP has exploited it for partisan advantage. Things got a little sticky for the GOP when David Duke ran as a Republican for political office. Only a handfull of Republicans like Beth Rickey had the courage to condemn Duke outright. The rest hoped he would go away which he eventually did. Mike Foster bought David Duke's mailing list in 1995 when he was running for governor. It was alleged to be a payoff to keep Duke out of the governor's race.

David Duke won ONE election in Louisiana under a set of circumstances which will never be duplicated. If we are going to revert to the Dukedom charge every time a stray racist is uncovered, we will never live down the Duke aberration. BTW -- He lost everything else he ever ran for. This self-flagellation needs to end.

Louisiana the land of David Duke? Perhaps I am naive but I don't see it that way. David Duke never represented the majority in Louisiana. Are there racists in Louisiana? Of course, and they come in all colors. Just like in all 50 states. There are IMHO as many who use race to forward their agenda. The rest of us really don't make race an issue. In fact, it is my belief that if we ever got around to calling ourselves just Americans and dropped the hyphens, the race issue would immediately lose some of its effect. This is the misguided (at best) actions of one man. As far as I have read, he broke no law. Saying that No Justice of the Peace should be able to pick and choose who can marry. Any couple presenting themselves with proper license should expect to be able to marry. I see no real reason to have a full blown outrage on this. The law should be changed. If this is an elected official voters should not re-elect him. Would this have gotten the same press if it had happened in the Northeast or in a Blue State? My guess is NO.

Sen. Vitter was man enough to vote against the amendment to the 2010 Defense Appropriations bill that would withhold defense contracts from companies like KBR “if they restrict their employees from taking workplace sexual assault, battery and discrimination cases to court. What ever happened to being proud of people who are willing to stand up for their own beliefs ?

There will always be men who think they are superior to women. There will always be members of one race who group members of another race and judge them in a negative light. This is even true between different tribes in Africa, so it is not a "Southern White" thing, by any means. Racism will never die, but it has become unacceptable. Best one can hope for really. Those who attempt to "group and judge" all of a particular group (by geographical area, political party, etc.) as "racist" by association with the actions or statement of "one of their group" are themselves guilty of the same action they claim to condemn.

The unfortunate reality is that racism in various forms continues in Louisiana until this very day. The problem is that many seek to take advantage of the issue for monetary gain and many even though they are obviously prejudiced are not chastised for it. This individual should be and appropriate action taken. However, we must also chastise all who use racism in various ways.

I think the lack of statements from the Louisiana Democratic Party, the Louisiana Republican Party, and others makes clear that the issue is not something of major significance in the minds of most, not that there is any fear of aggravating racist voters. David Duke had left the state for Texas, last I heard by the way. Has that changed? What this incident really demonstrates in my opinion is the backwardness that persists in much of rural Louisiana. For Louisiana to make a big issue of this matter while continuing to fail those who were so severely demeaned for reasons of their racial identity at the Superdome and Convention Center post-Katrina by denying a full investigation into what occurred would be ludicrous. If you want to make race a meaningful issue in Louisiana, show some real courage and drag Katrina's rattling skeletons out of the closet. But we're not going to do that because there is both fear and politics involved.

Louisiana law says that a JP can marry couples, but doesn't have to. Like lots of other shoddy legislation, this law is the law. If the federal government can decide to ignore its law enforcement responsibilities in states that allow medical marijuana, then it should let Louisiana law stand in this case too. Call the guy what you want to. Just as others will label the couple as they wish. Sure it makes Louisiana look ridiculous. Louisiana IS ridiculous, this is just one end of the spectrum of the multitude of varied proofs of that fact.
