NEW ORLEANS— Steve Scalise won a convincing victory over Republican Repreesentative in Congress District 1 election on Saturday night in beating State Representative, Tim Burns, 58.08% to 41% with over thirty-three thousand voters casting ballots in the Republican runoff.Scalise, a Louisiana State Senator collected over 19,334 votes.Tim Burns received 13,956 votes.
In the March primary, Scalise had received over 48 percent of the vote and Burns had obtained over 27 percent of the tally.
The win for Scalise means that he moves to the general election against Democrat candidate Gilda Reed and independents in this predominately Republican Congressional seat.
Scalise won in every parish in the district except for St. Tammany and Washington Parish.Burns, who hails from Northshore of Lake Pontchatrain defeated Scalise by an almost 2-1 margin in St. Tammany but Scalise returned the favor in Orleans and Jefferson Parish winning by an approximate 4-1 and 5-1 margin, respectively.
Burns received over 9400 votes of his approximate 14,000 vote total from his home base of St. Tammany Parish.
