While a depressed turnout in Jefferson Parish did not produce the expected Republican primary victory for Louisiana State Senator, Steve Scalise, his campaign which came close to winning with a 48-24 margin over Tim Burns is touting the progress being made as they ramp up to the runoffs in the 1st Congressional District.
According to a newsletter, “Not only did we win large majorities in Jefferson, Orleans, St. Charles and Tangipahoa Parishes, we finished very strongly in St. Tammany and Washington. Since January we have gained over 20% district-wide in the polls, and with your help I am confident we will continue this momentum.
Scalise said he received tremendous support from a dozen elected leaders in St. Tammany Parish.
The St. Tammany Parish Councilmen who have endorsed me this week include Council Chairman Jerry Binder, Steve Stefancik, Chris Canulette, Gene Bellisario, Richard Artigue, and “Red” Thompson. More than half of the Slidell City Council has also endorsed me this week. The Slidell City Councilmen who have endorsed me include Ricky Hursey, Jr., Joe Fraught, Ray Canada, Landon Cusimano, and Kevin Kingston.
St. Tammany Parish Clerk of Court Malise Prieto also announced her endorsement of me this week. She is the only parish-wide elected official in St. Tammany to endorse a candidate in this race. This shows that people all across this district want an effective Congressman, not a regional candidate.
Obviously, not included in that list was Scalise’s first-primary opponent, Ben Morris, the Slidell Mayor.
