Governor Jindal Can Mend Fences With Louisiana

Written by: Stephen Sabludowsky

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

Assuming that Governor Jindal does remain Governor of Louisiana and not seek higher ground in Washington, he has plenty of fence-mending to do.

His own pollster shows that he has the resiliency to rebound in the eyes of the public.  After waffling on the Legislative pay raise issue, he dropped significantly.

According to John Maginnis in his Fax Weekly, “A poll done for the state Republican Party shows Gov. Bobby Jindal's popularity surging back after it sharply dipped during the legislative pay raise controversy.

In the onMessage poll of 500 voters, 69 percent had a favorable opinion of him compared to 18 percent with an unfavorable opinion. The poll by Wes Anderson, whose firm worked for Jindal in the governor's race, was taken July 6-8, after Jindal vetoed the legislative pay raise but before he axed 258 spending items in the state budget.

That marks a solid rebound from the 59 percent favorable impression and 36 percent unfavorable impression of him registered in a Southern Media poll taken just before the pay raise veto. Yet he is still not back to his peak of a 77 percent positive rating before the pay raise blow-up.”

Should Jindal stay in Louisiana, he is doing the right thing.  While other states are having significant budget problems and are showing modest growth at best, Louisiana revenues are booming.  With our budget fixed to oil prices and with our actual revenues almost certainly going to be more than the amount projected by the Revenue Estimating Conference, the government will be able to pay down its debt and make a dent into future investments.

Currently, Jindal is on the campaign trail of sorts, going from one town hall meeting to another which is a good thing for him to do.  The more hands he shakes with the voters, the more he listens to their needs, the more they see him in public, the better he will keep their support.

However, the two areas he sorely needs to work on during the “off-season” is patching up with the legislature and with the media.

While neither institution has absolute or even substantial power over the people in many ways they do have influence.

With either groups, Jindal would not do very well if they were polled.

Besides “the lack of trust issue” that popped up during and after the pay raise boil, the legislature ultimately can control Jindal’s budget and his legislative agenda.  However, many have told me that he was too detached, off in too many personal ventures, too inconsistent and not clear on his support of his own agenda.  Obviously, right now, many of them do not trust him and will not help him get his own legislative programs through the mill.  On this front, Jindal, the reform Governor could follow Buddy Roemer’s footsteps and become neutralized.

Also, in many respects, Jindal’s window to the outside world is through his press secretary, Melissa Sellers.  Her name often comes up in media circles and it is not in the most flattering of terms, to put it lightly.  Sellers is a young woman who is obviously trying to protect her boss but for the past year, she has done a disservice to him.  This does not suggest I believe she should be discharged which I have recommended in the past.  But, as I have told her personally, she should meet with the media and engage in a candid “pow wow”.  She is still in campaign mode and not in administration mode.  She could learn much from the local media, allow them to vent and make suggestions.  In turn, she can state her case and all of us can work together with much better trust.  Until she realizes that the media is not her adversary, and until she build bridges with those who want her to succeed, she will continue to look bad and in turn, make her boss appear disjointed.

Although Jindal has much going for him—his personal charm, his intelligence and a hot energy economy feeding Louisiana government, he must bridge those gaps with the legislature and the media.   His high numbers in the polls right now could soar even more or they can sour as they did weeks ago.  But, if he really wants to turn this state around, he needs to patch up those areas that failed in the past.

The Governor has a chance to achieve many political and personal goals.  The more he does so, the better it will be for all of Louisiana.  So far this year, he has been less than candid with his words, has totally repulsed many in the legislature and has aggravated the “fourth estate” by not being “straight forward” at times.  This can change, hopefully, it will change.  We will all be better off if it does.

I am fully aware that racism is not a "white only" thing, but since I was addressing anthony's statements about "Jim Crow" laws....... Unfortunately far too many of our poor (not just blacks who are poor although this is seemingly more pervasive among them) view those politicians who provide the means to stay poor and dependant upon government as their saviors. I do support us making our laws by direct vote - that would be majority rule. Actually, I can think of nothing else that would be as starkly "majority rule" as such a system.

KPF.... 'White' Racists????? What about the 'Black' racists? Or the 'Latino' racists? Or the 'Chinese' racists? What about 'MiddleEast' racists? What about ‘Southern racists’? What about ‘Northern’ racists? So a 'group' of 'Whites' have an ever less influence on 'Our' governance?????? How about making it so that a group of 'Racists' have an ever less influence on 'Our' governance????? How about allowing the majority to become the majority again? It is a very bad landscape we have going on out there in lala land.... ************ White House sees record budget gap in 2009...... By Jeremy Pelofsky and David Lawder..... 1 hour, 19 minutes ago..... WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Bush administration on Monday projected the U.S. budget deficit will soar to a new record of nearly half a trillion dollars in fiscal 2009 as a housing-led economic slowdown cuts into government revenues.******************* And ******** McCain backs affirmative-action ban.... By Kevin Freking... The Associated Press Article Launched: 07/27/2008 12:56:45 PM MDT... WASHINGTON — Presidential challenger John McCain said Sunday that he supports a proposed ballot initiative in his home state that would prohibit affirmative action policies from state and local governments........ ********* KPF, it is time to put away the 'politically correct' innuendos, label it what it is, roll up the sleeves, and get to work on things........ I see a lot of good that has happened during the past 2 or three decades, and I have seen a lot of bad, now we are faced with assessing the costs, and the benefits we have in hand... It looks dismal at best...... And I am not even sure of the worth, because what we have now, we would have had anyways where race relations are concerned...... No government intervention necessary...... Oh, I am sure the south would have still been 8 decades behind, but, what??????? It sure ain't going to be the South that saves the Union, and at this point in time it doesn't even appear the Union can save the Union... We seem to be principally, economically, and morally bankrupt............................ As a collective whole......

Perhaps I'm missing something - but as a taxpayer - why would I want to see anyone "held down?" I'd much rather see as many people as possible "rise up" and stand on their own two feet; that way the taxpayers don't have to pay to support them and so will have more money to take care of their own families. If someone gets a good education and follows that up by getting a good paying job, I'm glad for them. This is true regardless of the color of their skin, their ancestry, religious beliefs - if any - or their sexual orientation. I know there are many white racists who hate anyone who is "different" from them, but they have ever less influence in our governance (a good thing, IMHO). Most people I know just want to "live and let live" – they also would like to have a little change left over after paying the bills and perhaps even be able to retire before they are too old to enjoy it. The more taxes that come out of working people's pay to support those who are being "held down" the more difficult this is, therefore I want as many of us as possible to succeed - at least to the point of being self sufficient.

The only reason gov. Tipu Tib may have gained a little more popularity is because he vetoed bills that would have helped minorities.Trust me in this state as long as he employ jim crow idealogy he will be loved in louisiana. In this great state of louisiana ,the ruling class use minorities to step on minorities, and gov. Tipu Tib is so ambitious to oblige And for those who don't remember who Tipu Tib is he was a black arab slave trader who thought he was european.

Are you saying that poll was conducted from a distance by a chicken across the road?

I am not convinced that a poll taken for the GOP by Jindal's pollster is all that accurate and may in fact be a public relations ploy.

I agree that Mr. Jindal has a chance to do very well as Governor of Louisiana but I share your opinion that he is not the most credible person. He says words that you can see right through. He is the transparent governor.
