King Bobby Jindal of Louisiana

 King Jindal of Louisiana

Yesterday, I received an email which I am sharing with you from the Louisiana Republican Party.  They praised Governor Jindal as if he was the savior for doing the right thing.

It would not have taken a rocket scientist or a policy wonk to know that he was on the wrong side of the issue for weeks.  Yes, he ultimately made the right decision although it is difficult to count the number of flip flops he made in the process.

The bottom line despite what the Louisiana Republican Party wants us to believe is--he made the right decision because he was being pressured to do so.

This was not leadership on his part although I am personally pleased he decided to listen to the people.  Their outrage was palpable and the SMOR poll showing his incredible free fall and almost 90 percent of the people opposing the raise would be proof that a political neophyte would know he was being creamed.

Yet, we might never know what ultimately motivated him to change course.

Perhaps it was the recall.  Perhaps it was the rally that was planned for the day before his “drop dead day on the veto”.

According to the Ind. “The final straw, however, was probably the rally organized by bayoubuzz.com publisher Stephen Sabludowsky scheduled for the state Capitol on July 7. On the eve of Jindal’s deadline to veto the bill, the last thing Jindal wanted voters and the local and national media to see was outraged protestors voicing their disillusionment. (After he finally vetoed the bill, the rally was canceled and Jindal’s recall petition pulled.)

Perhaps it was the many conservative and not-so-conservative media.   In my view, it was definitely the energy and efforts of “every-day people” making certain that they were not going to be manipulated.

To be very clear, I am extremely pleased that Governor Jindal admitted one of his mistakes, made the right decision to veto very bad legislation and I will work very hard to ensure that the state moves forward during his administration.

But, for the Louisiana Republican Party to make him appear as if he is “King of the Hill” is pathetic spin.  He was pushed up that hill by many and that hill is now a pile of rubble, not a tall strong land mass holding up a shiny city.

Here is the email from the Louisiana Republican Party:

What They Are Saying

About Governor Jindal’s Pay Raise Veto

Analysts

National Review’s Kathryn Jean Lopez:Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal was handed a leadership test in June. He not only passed it with flying colors — he set an example for other leaders while doing so. … Bobby Jindal’s move on Monday wasn’t some procedural goo-goo move, it was about honesty and leadership.” (Kathryn Jean Lopez, “Jindal Leads,” National Review, 7/1/08)

Rush Limbaugh: “So Bobby Jindal took the time, did it right, and did the right thing. Vetoed the pay raise.  They’re gonna love him even more in Louisiana, because no matter how little legislators get paid, everybody’s for their guy getting okayed but not anybody else’s.  So congratulations to Governor Jindal.” (“Stack of Stuff Quick Hits Page,” Rush Limbaugh Show, 6/30/08)

Radio Host Lee Fletcher: “Governor Bobby Jindal did the right thing. He stepped up and took the lead. Governor Jindal took this bull by the horns and made the right decision. We are very appreciative and proud of this move. Governor Jindal kept his word and took a stand. Leadership is what the state called for and Jindal delivered.” (Lee Fletcher, “Big Time Applause For Jindal’s Leadership on Veto,” TownHallShow.com, 6/30/08)

Louisiana Action Council’s Brian McNab: “…Governor Bobby Jindal took a stand on Monday morning, listened to the will of the people and vetoed Senate Bill 672 … We applaud Gov. Jindal for taking strong action against this excessive legislative pay increase …” (Lee Fletcher, “Big Time Applause For Jindal’s Leadership on Veto,” TownHallShow.com, 6/30/08)

Louisiana State University Associate Professor Of Political Science Jeff Sadow: “Winners: Jindal. Yes, he may have in the future on some occasions rough times with the Legislature since he appeared to allow many of them to endanger their own political careers by permitting them to go the record as being for a raise and they will smart over that. But public opinion solidly on his side as a result of this veto will buttress his power to get his agenda through. It allows him to keep a campaign promise to oppose raises he called “excessive” and demonstrates he understands that as governor it also is his power and responsibility to prevent undesirable policy to be made when he can. Jindal’s news conference, in justifying his veto and retraction of his vow not to interfere in legislative affairs thereby signaling he intended not to veto it, showed he understands these points and has the political maturity and wherewithal to make the right decision, even when difficult.” (Jeff Sadow, “Jindal Veto: Louisiana Winners and Losers,” BayouBuzz.com, 6/30/08)

Democrat Political Analyst Brian Cespiva: “‘It’s a positive step, and I am very glad he did it,’ … ‘I don’t think there is anything negative you can say about it because he did the right thing,’ …” (Karina Donica, “Cenla applauds pay raise veto,” Alexandria Town-Talk, 7/1/08)

Rapides Parish Women’s Club’s Elizabeth Weber Levy: “‘I am delighted that he heard our voices and has vetoed the bill,’ … ‘He did acknowledge that it was a mistake, so I am happy twofold because I am glad he acknowledged a mistake and that he vetoed. That took a lot of courage,’ …” (Karina Donica, “Cenla applauds pay raise veto,” Alexandria Town-Talk, 7/1/08)

Political Consultant Allan Katz: “In the end, we may look back on this and say that this experience made Bobby Jindal a better, smarter politician and a better, smarter governor …” (Richard Hunter, “Katz: Jindal Had To Veto Pay Raise,” WRNO-99.5FM, 6/30/08)

Newspapers

Lafayette Advertiser Editorial: “We commend the governor for vetoing the pay-raise bill. Besides being grossly excessive, it would have completely overshadowed the good things the Legislature accomplished.” (Editorial, “Pay-raise veto was right thing to do,” Lafayette Advertiser, 7/1/08)

Lafayette Advertiser’s Warren Caudle: “Thank you Governor Jindal, it took a little while but you did the right thing.  When he vetoed the legislative pay raise bill he took a lot of pressure not only off of him but the members of the legislature also. (Warren Caudle, “Good Job on the Veto,” Lafayette Advertiser Blog, 7/1/08)

New Orleans Times-Picayune Editorial: “Gov. Bobby Jindal stood by the public and his own principles Monday, vetoing an outrageous 123 percent pay raise … By vetoing this bill, he is keeping his promise to voters.” (Editorial, “The veto victory,” New Orleans Times-Picayune, 7/1/08)

Baton Rouge Advocate Editorial: “The veto of a legislative pay raise might not endear the governor to lawmakers. Nor will the vetoes of earmarks. But in both cases, he has demonstrated a concern for the public’s view on pay raises and its interest in responsibly spending tax money.” (Editorial, “Our Views: Good vetoes from  Jindal,” Baton Rouge Advocate, 7/1/08)

Alexandria Town-Talk Editorial: “Gov. Bobby Jindal did the right thing on Monday.” (Editorial, “Voters won’t forget, forgive,” Alexandria Town-Talk, 7/1/08)

Louisianans

Ed Ralph: “Ed Ralph of Jackson Parish was happy to hear the news: ‘Thank you. Thank you. That’s wonderful,’ he said.” (Stephen Largen, “Residents respond to Jindal’s change of heart,” Monroe News-Star, 7/1/08)

Herb McCaskill: “When asked whether he would like to see Jindal as Sen. John McCain’s running mate, McCaskill said no. ‘I’d rather have him here,’ he said.” (Stephen Largen, “Residents respond to Jindal’s change of heart,” Monroe News-Star, 7/1/08)

Sue Peters: “I was delighted when I heard it, and I think the Governor has done exactly the right thing” (Scott Satchfield, “Voters say they’re relieved, but will remember those who voted for raise,” WWL-New Orleans, 6/30/08)

Rodney Clark: “Well I think he done the right thing because our economy right now can’t stand a double pay, they deserve a pay raise, but not a double pay raise.” (Scott Satchfield, “Voters say they’re relieved, but will remember those who voted for raise,” WWL-New Orleans, 6/30/08)

Wanda Cordova:Stanley resident Wanda Cordova, 54, felt like ‘a weight had lifted off her chest’ Monday after hearing news of the veto, she said.” (Mike Hasten, “Jindal vetoes legislative pay raise,” Shreveport Times, 7/1/08)

Elected Officials

State Treasurer John Kennedy: “I applaud Governor Jindal’s decision to veto this pay raise. Once again, Governor Jindal stood on the side of taxpayers – just as he did in enacting ethics reform, standing strong against questionable earmarks, and signing into law one of the largest tax relief packages in Louisiana’s history.” (Press Release, “Kennedy Statement on Governor Jindal’s Pay Raise Veto,” John Kennedy for Senate, 6/30/08)

Senator David Vitter: “I applaud Bobby on his legislative pay raise veto. It was clearly the right thing to do. He has kept his campaign promise and stopped a truly offensive measure from going forward. Bobby has already passed dramatic ethics reform, job-creating tax cuts and workforce development, and real choice for families stuck in failing schools.  I hope all legislators reject political games and join him in building on this people’s agenda…” (Chris Blalock, “Vitter Applauds Pay Raise Veto, CBS-5 Alexandria, 6/30/08)

House Speaker Jim Tucker (R-Terrytown): “I respect Governor Jindal’s veto of Senate Bill 672.” (Lee Fletcher, “Reaction from Lawmakers on Great Jindal Veto!” TownHallShow.com, 6/30/08)

Senator Jody Amedee (D-Gonzales): “I am happy the governor vetoed it and did the right thing. Now, the state can go forward.” (Lee Fletcher, “Reaction from Lawmakers on Great Jindal Veto!” TownHallShow.com, 6/30/08)

Representative Henry Burns (R- Haughton): “‘I praise the governor for vetoing the bill’ … ‘I am very excited that the cloud can be lifted and we can move forward now doing the business of the people.’” (Shelli Briery, “Lawmakers Speak Out On Governor’s Veto,” KTAL-Shreveport, 6/30/08)

Representative Franklin J. Foil (R-Baton Rouge): “I am glad the governor vetoed the bill …  This issue has been a big distraction, and I am glad I can focus on the real issues of improving this state’s economy and better meeting the needs of the people in my district.” (Lee Fletcher, “Reaction from Lawmakers on Great Jindal Veto!” TownHallShow.com, 6/30/08)

Representative Brett Geymann (R-Lake Charles): “I’m not surprised. In fact, I’ve been saying from the beginning that I thought he was going to veto” … “We’re certainly not going to hold it against him over here. And we’re going to continue to work on the reform agenda. I’m glad it’s over because it’s overshadowed all the great things we’ve done in this past session…”  (Lee Peck, “SWLA Lawmakers Respond to Pay Raise Veto,” KPLC-Shreveport, 6/30/08)

Senator Mike Michot (R-Lafayette): [Michot} said he welcomed Jindal’s veto and promised to work to keep the governor’s ‘reform agenda on track. Our citizens need to know that above all else we are responsive to their calls for action and that we understand what it means to be a public servant’ …” (Ed Anderson, “Jindal does about face, vetoes raise,” New Orleans Times-Picayune, 7/1/08)

Senator Willie Mount (D-Lake Charles): “I just sensed that maybe he would [veto the pay raise] and I’m glad he has” … “Let’s keep moving in the right direction and that is that is to make sure that we provide the very best service we can for the most cost effective way we can for the citizens of Louisiana” (Lee Peck, “SWLA Lawmakers Respond to Pay Raise Veto,” KPLC-Shreveport, 6/30/08)

Comments from BayouBuzz readers

Hermann, If you think that Steve is so pathetic, then, are you in favor of honesty and trustworthiness in Government? Or, would you prefer to be one of those bleeping sheep that follow the master even when he is evasive, he lies and he is spineless. Thanks to Steve and others, there was pressure. If you read Bayoubuzz, it is full of information about his administration. I have even read where Steve was gushing over Jindal from an anti-Jindal person. Look, the overwhelming majority was against the payraise, but we are clueless as to what has occurred and why it occurred. Mr. Transparency Governor is Mr. Mud and you and those who want to rehabilitate a Governor who has blundered his way into the Louisiana revolution can do whatever you want. I am glad that Bayoubuzz is willing to ask these questions. If anyone is pathetic, it is you for being a partisan sheep.

Bored, don't forget the money that it wjould have cost for each of their retirements and for all those to come in the furture. I don't kow what it is but any of you who I am sure a lot smarter than I could help me figure the total . Anyway, I don't believe it was ever about the money. I may be wrong, but I thin it had more to do with representation and trust.

Steve- I really feel sorry for you and your very small following. You can't stand Jindal. You made that abundantly clear during the campaign and keep confirming it since. Jindal is young and still learning. Also, he is attempting an extremely difficult job in trying to reform corrupt Louisiana politics and entrenched politicians. I fault him for having an ineffective kiddie-corp group of advisors, who have been ill-serving him. Your self-importance is amusing and pathrtic.

Undoubtely there were many reasons involved in forcing Jindal to do the right thing. The recall, the rally, talk radio, many editorials (exempt for Gannett). I believe the Dale Brown letter which was made public over the weekend was the nail in the coffin. That letter was a stinging indictment of the way Jindal mis-handled this whole affair. No way bumbling Bobby could have afforded the LSU faithful to jump on the bandwagon for his recall. Thanks Steve for your efforts.

I praise Bobby Jindal as he is only human and he shows that he is listening to the people and does represent his constituency. He is to be admired to admit not only that he changed and that he made a mistake, but has gone further to explain why, even though his reason was strange (dissonent) , which I find pretty interesting. I feel he needs to be more calm and confident and not let his passions mess him up, not realizing what he has done earlier. He listens and he will learn. I wrote him and gave him political reasons, if he wants to save his career, why he should veto, as well as that the people wanted it. That is what he did represent the people and provided a Governor to continue and hopefully like to see him Vice President.

You have done a good job on pay raise issue,Steve. Pat yourself on the back and get off the horsey. Louisiana must have more pressing issues. All said and done, the controversial amount was around 4 million out of a budget of 30 Billion dollars.

What a bunch of political manure. Bobby Jindal did the right thing only as a last resort. He originally thought he could walk through this crap without getting poop on his shoes. And all of these comments from fellow politicians prove the fact that they all live in la la land. Or maybe they think we live in la la land.

Steveo, Thank you for writing but I feel you are wrong on two counts: 1. I have never put comments from people on this web site or any other web site that support my position. So, your basic premise is wrong because your facts are wrong. 2. While I quoted IND.com I also said that "Perhaps it was the recall. Perhaps it was the rally that was planned for the day before his “drop dead day on the veto”. I also said, "Perhaps it was the many conservative and not-so-conservative media. In my view, it was definitely the energy and efforts of “every-day people” making certain that they were not going to be manipulated." So, while the Ind is one writer's opinion, I certainly said that the reason for the decision was "perhaps" a number of people and factors and I said in my opinion, especially the people. So, you can attack me however you want, but, a person reading my comments would easily see that I was saying I have no idea what made Jindal decide to change his vote but that I was giving credit to many people and that includes the hundreds of people who had contacted me to take citizen action. And Jacob, you and I disagree. I was at the press conference when questions regarding his decisions NOT to veto were raised by many reporters. I even put up my question in which I specificially asked him about the pledge and he refused was very unresponsive to a very specific question. That is the antithesis of transparency. You talk to the reporters who asked their questions. I did. And I do not feel he was being responsive at all based upon my own question and based upon my questions and discussions with the other reporters. The Governor is the one who raised the bar and our expectations, not me or us. So, when we do not receive answers to very specific questions but receive a "recorded answer", that in my opinion is not transparency. Go to Bayoubuzz on Youtube and you will see the question asked and the answer given. Also, if you read my column from yesterday, I have outlined very specific ways that the Governor and the legislature could deal directly with the people and circumvent the media. Do you know why the Governor made a pledge to the legislature, what that pledge was, when it was made, who was there? Does anyone? If you do know, then please tell us. The vast majority of us, in my opinion, are dying to know and in my opinion, we have a right to know. Last, did you keep up with the legislative process in terms of carving out the Administrative staff from divulging information that other agencies of government must reveal? Why such secrecy? What happened to the Governor's promise of transparency? Again, I think the public has a right to know as much as possible about their elected officials since they work for us. There are a few exceptions such as trade secrets of private companies and national security. But, if they want to serve the public, they must make themselves public.

Jindal's decision to veto the pay raise bill was a response to popular pressure, but trying to call it an issue of a "lack of transparency" is not appropriate. The ethics reform measures passed recently dramatically limited the ability of lobbyists, businessmen, and special interests to influence the legislative and bureaucratic process through a number of financial inducements and in a variety of ways. That was an increase in transparency, because it restricted activities taking place out of public view. But the pay raise legislation, which was a bad idea from the beginning for more reasons than I care to state, occurred in full view of the public. This is why it failed; the people of Louisiana saw everything unfolding right before them, they were able to make their voices heard, and they stopped a bad piece of legislation before it became law. That is the way transparency works. When the business of the legislature is conducted in full view of the voters, the attitudes of voters carry more weight. And you cannot separate Bobby Jindal from the development of this new political climate because it is his creation. It was almost the singular campaign issue upon which he ran and it was his initiative that got it passed. But you can charge him with more than a little political naiveté for not anticipating that a promise not to stand in the way of a legislative pay raise in this state is like holding out a hindquarter of fresh beef before a pack of hungry wolves. Of course they would jump on it and try to stuff themselves. This is Louisiana. Bobby should have known better.

There has been a spin on bobby Jindal as soon as he emerged as the Whiz Kid at 21 and heading up hosptial ? stuff. I think he and a few people around him have their own agenda. When I saw the show where he kept referring to number 1 again and agian, I thought this was the most self --righteous display I have seen in a long time. Where did Jindal come from an so quickly? If you are smart enough and you go to the Ivy LEAGUES, PREFERRABLY YALE OR HARVARD, BUT OTHERS CNA SLIP IN, YOU HAVE A VERY GOOD CHANCE AT NATIONAL POLITICS IF YOU CAAN IMPRESS THE RIGHT POWER BROKERS.

Understandable Rhettswife, but perhaps another ploy would be to get some usefulness out of him for the 180 days he has left to serve as Guv, if he indeed is going to be recalled...... Sort of like laying below a sword suspended from the ceiling by a thread I suppose…… That is the true test of his character and should be the deciding factor as to whether or not a recall is reasonable......... I was never really very impressed with him in the first place even though he held an impressive office as Congressman…. And now Guv……. I suppose ‘some voters’ are angry because of no answers or recognition from him in the past.... Fair....... I suppose ‘some voters’ are angry because instead of the feds paying for the pay raise, they realized that the money was coming out of their pockets and wanted the decision to be turned around.... Fair? Not really sure, I suppose it is really a lesson hard learned or hard taught........ On both parties part…….. In the first place it was the legislature that got greedy........... So what if Pi said no pay raise during his campaign? You didn’t really believe that and assign an A-1 priority to that as being the reason to vote for him did you? If you did, you are as ignorant as the voter that believes the politician when it says no more additional taxes…….. Well, Pi stepped in as mediary... And at the final moment, well, veto……………. So now that Pi has actually acknowledged that he is going to listen to the citizens of the state of Louisiana, why keep kicking him in the bawlz on this subject???????? It is hardly reasonable grounds for a recall……… And in the second place, just what do you suppose to replace him with???? Myself, I have no faith in him, but he is better than the alternate waiting in the hall….. He got smacked into reality, and if I were him, I would probably consider resigning at this point in time to show Louisiana a lesson, even if it could be construed as cutting off his nose to spite his face..... Because really, with this stupid 'recall' y'all have flexed your little muscles, but there was really nothing there to accomplish or impress aside from placating your egos and yourselves... What was the outcome you expected as a result of this action???? I thought one was supposed to be to goad the Guv into doing what is right? You have it, right there in your laps, right now, right here, at this point in time... He did what a lot of us wanted, he finally stepped up and vetoed it.... Now give him thanks, the credit he is due on this one, and get over it.... Or keep ranting for a recall and shove it through...... Or never forget what was started and make it clear to him that 180 days or not, it can be revived at anytime and acted upon by the citizens of the State of Louisiana and that we want him to act on subjects that are prudent, necessary and correct for us all…………. Talk about a double edged sword...

All he did Stephen, dear, was show that he is nothing more than a chicken consummate politician. Until the people recognize this fact, we will face problems and problems in the days of his term. He has not true experience, he has nothing but appointments and elected office based on his rhetoric to support him. Yes it was the Bayou Buzz and others that fought hard for the people and deserve the praise. The only thing that Jindal did was protect his hide the best he could after he vetoed the bill that he had connived with the legislators to pass. When will the citizens of Louisiana finally get some common sense and see what this man is all about? COMMON SENSE AND LOGIC. LOOK AT REALITY, PEOPLE.

I do not exactly know what it is in the recently passed reform bills that caused it, but a number of questionable elements have opted to vacate positions on various boards through out the state… And for that, I owe Pi a “Well done Sir”…… What his future plans are, I do not know, but I am more than apprehensive about some of his positions…………… The veto? It in itself is meaningless, but in all fairness, he gave the legislature the rope to hang their selves, and he allowed the people of Louisiana to voice their opinion……. Unfortunately he forced the ‘recall’ vehicle to be deployed…….. I would wonder if he didn’t give the citizens the rope they needed to hang their selves as well? Very shortly , football begins, and focus wanes…. And in all actuality I have really seen nothing, nor do I expect anything aside from business as usual…….. But that should not diminish the fact that he was partially responsible for some of the old school boys to abandon their posts….. And then again, I would wonder what it is they are going to be replaced with………………..
