Baton Rouge, Louisiana--The Chairman of the Louisiana Democratic Party has issued a statement calling for the resignation of David Vitter as US Senator. In doing so, the Chairman directly takes a shot at Governor Bobby Jindal’s actions for reform by saying among other things, “but as long as he continues to shield the philandering junior Senator from the same type of accountability that the people of New York have demanded and received, then it is all a wasted effort”.
The Republican Party has not recommended any action against Vitter.
In light of the resignation of New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, Chris Whittington, Chairman of the Louisiana Democratic Party called for the immediate resignation of Louisiana Senator David Vitter.
"The people of New York have been shown today that their leaders will be held accountable," Whittington said. "And yet, the people of Louisiana have waited seven months for the same kind of demonstration and all they have gotten is arrogant silence from Mr. Vitter and Governor Jindal, who despite all his big talk of reform, maintains his allegiance to the disgraced Senator whose sins mirror those of former Governor Spitzer.
"David Vitter is a stain on our state's attempt to demonstrate that we have changed our ways," Whittington said. "He is a disgrace and a disappointment. And now he is a walking example that Louisiana continues to lag behind other states when it comes to holding its leaders accountable.
"Governor Jindal can talk about all the good lists he wants. He can spend hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars on a special session aimed at changing Louisiana's perception, but as long as he continues to shield the philandering junior Senator from the same type of accountability that the people of New York have demanded and received, then it is all a wasted effort."
"If Senator Vitter has any regard for the needs of Louisiana citizens to be able to trust the sincerity of our leaders then he will stand up, be a man and resign like Governor Spitzer has," Whittington said. "And if Governor Jindal is ready to demonstrate for once and for all that he is truly committed to cleaning up our state's image and not just pushing empty talk at the taxpayer's expense then he will follow the lead of New York's elected officials and demand Senator Vitter's resignation."
In a prior statement, the Democratic Party has stated that Governor Jindal recently has helped Senator Vitter raise money for his war chest.
Totally unrelated to the Democratic Party’s call for Vitter’s resignation is this week's Commentary in Gambit Weekly also calling for his resignation.
Various columnists and writers for Bayoubuzz have also urged that Vitter resign as the Louisiana U.S. Senator.
Not only am I ignorant of the law I should not have presumed to know what you - as an individual - want. I hope I provide a bit of humor to this site occasionally as well as presumptive ignorance. Then again.............. most "outrage" I see among those who hold office and in the electorate is only directed against members of the opposition party; so I will hold to my point. Additionally "some" people may consider a temporary appointment followed by a general election to still be preferable to a member of the opposition party from completing their term in office. So even under those circumstances "some" people simply want to increase the chances of a Democrat taking this Senatorial seat. Written by kpf

Hey Gov. Jindal, how about putting all that rhetoric of ethics reform into practice and using the Canal St. Madame's black book to out all the Louisiana politicians whose names are contained on her client list. Enough talk, it is time for action Guvner! Written by Johnny L.

Vitter should resign. Jindal would name the interim Senator while a special election would be held this fall to fill the remainder of Vitter's term. Written by David Quidd

You do not give a damn about "standards" or "hypocrisy" - you just want a Republican to resign to give a Democrat a chance to fill the office. Everyone knows this; you may as well stop spewing all the B.S. No one is being fooled by it, no one. Written by kpf

Vitter set his own standards and we are only asking him to follow the standards he set for himself and other politicians. Period. Written by Dan

Dears, let's put this issue to rest. Use your common sense. This is nothing but a game of politics and the issue of the bedroom is the excuse. Now out each and everyone of the political whoremongers - get it over with. Then let's start with a clean slate. However, can you really be sure of what the actual standards of the politicians you elect are? NO!!!! However, it is time to show some action by cleaning them all out now and showing future politicians exactly how most people in this nation feel and how they react. Two men stand in judgment while hundreds of other elected officials stand in the shadows in silence - not that their hands are clean but breathing with a sigh of relief that they have not been disclosed yet. YET, DEARS, YET!!!!!! Written by RhettsWife

I'm sorry but I simply cannot listen when a member of one party criticizes a member of the opposition party. Only when the transgressions are serious enough to have criticism from within their own party's members do I give their "sense of outrage" any credence. Absent that condition, it is merely “politics as usual.” Written by kpf

If Vitter really had a pair then he'd be resigning and not planning to run for re-election rather than waiting for the public to throw him out. Written by Richard P.

Vitter should go in the best interest of the State but he cannot be forced out by attempting to pressure the Governor to call for his resignation. At least not from the likes of Chris Whittington or anybody else in the Democratic party ,all of whom have been hiding under the bed with regards to Bill Jefferson, who, by remaining in office, is doing a whole lot more damage to the State than Vitter. If the Democratic Party is so concerned about the image of Louisiana across the nation, how about calling on the parties involved to speed up the Jefferson trial instead of letting this wound fester? Unlike Jefferson,it is doubtful Vitter will be re-elected. With regards to moral issues, we don't need any sermons from Democrats. Clean up your own house. Written by poboy1

This line in the Dubois column jumped out at me: "Christopher Tidmore, a conservative Republican columnist who first broke the story of Vitter's trysts with the local prostitute known as Wendy Cortez . . . ." No, people who were actually interested in the truth, rather than bloviating about it, would have instead written something like, "Christopher Tidmore, a conservative Republican columnist who first accused, but has never been able to prove, Vitter of trysts . . . ." The entire business that an accusation is enough to "link" A with B is so weak it's runny. Mr. & Mrs. La. know about those accusations. Once you get past the fever swamps of Democratic activists and Larry Flynt, few believe Wendy Cortez. That's the real nub of the problem here - which one of these people is telling the truth? If Wendy and the Canal Street Madam are correct, then Vitter ought to be toast. If they're lying then he shouldn't be, not on the public record so far. Nixon didn't get booted out of the White House for Watergate. He got fired for lying about it. If Vitter is lying about Wendy, that's one thing. Getting fired up about a two faced Vitter isn't enough to cashier him in my book. Finally, the true disgrace in New York is that Spitzer only got run out of town for Kristen. The Yankees both condoned and approved his abuse of the AG's office. As between strange field touch-and-goes and Spitzer's rampages as AG, it's a no-brainer for me. Written by Kelly Haggar
