Louisiana Elections: Landrieu, Obama, Jindal And US Congress

Written by: Stephen Sabludowsky

Buzz Right Back----E-Mail a Friend----Print Page

Election Night 2008 was astounding when you consider the ultimate results nationally and locally.

Leading the pack of course was the national victory by Barack Obama and the “pick up”  by the Democrats in Congress.

In Louisiana, a state known for being unique, things were slightly different.

McCain received 1,147,603 votes and Obama collected 780,981 which amount to a 58.61% to 39.89% differential.  Yet, Mary Landrieu received 986,411 to John Kennedy’s 866,624 which gave her a 52.08% to 45.75% edge (incidentally, this was almost exactly the margin of victory I predicted weeks ago).

In effect, Landrieu performed better than Obama but not as well as McCain.

The real jackpot for Mary Landrieu was in New Orleans and East Baton Rouge Parish.

She garnered over 230,000 votes within those two parishes.  She also did well in Jefferson and Caddo Parishes.  Those parishes translated into approximately one-third of her vote.

Another way to look at the results is that John Kennedy did better than Barack Obama in Louisiana.  He received over 100,000 votes more than the President-elect.

So, where does all of this leave Louisiana as the state tries to rebound from Katrina, Rita,

Gustav and Ike and as it focuses upon major issues such as coastal erosion, hurricane protection and a variety of other needs.

I believe Louisiana will receive much more attention from the Democrat-controlled Congress and from Obama than it did so from the Bush administration and the Republican controlled Congress which lost power two years ago.

Senator Landrieu’s margin of victory has increased by a substantial amount since she edged out Woody Jenkins twelve years ago.  Over the next two years at the minimum, she will be a major player in the US Senate and with her seat on Appropriations, she will be able to help Louisiana with our recovery.

Louisiana will likely remain a conservative state as evidenced by Landrieu’s statewide victory but Republican Bill Cassidy’s Congressional win in the Baton Rouge area over relatively newly elected, Democrat, Don Cazeyoux.

For now, it is obvious that Louisiana needs future Obama administration and the Democrat-controlled Congress more than Washington needs Louisiana.

We will see how the demography changes over the next few years and if Louisiana begins to accept a Democrat Washington.  We will also see if the election will change the course for Bobby Jindal as his fate in helping Louisiana is now tethered to a party with which he shares major differences.

If Obama runs a centrist-style government, Mary Landrieu will continue to be able to be congruent with the Louisiana voters and possibly with Congress.  Landrieu had no “cakewalk” last night and Louisiana is not likely to suddenly become a “blue state” despite her victory last night.

Election night was a defining moment nationally and worldwide.  We will need to wait and see what the future brings before we know how Election Night 2008 defines Louisiana and what type of role in the nation and the world our state will play on a stage of new realities.

Kovach - Harry Lee - Judge Guidry - Judge Kuhn - Guidry...? And the punch line to all that stellar insight into Congress and Louisiana????

Yes, Kpf..this is true::::"I recently saw that Newell Normand gave Kovach his endorsment" (Normand is no Harry Lee)... internal rift.. happens all the time...but,I was also talking about the Judge Guidry/Judge Kuhn race..... Money (much more for TV ads) won the race for Guidry.... We need another way to select our judges:::: On ablility, experience, and service--An appointment, not a popularity contest. In the latter race, both candidates had experience-- but, I believe public voting is the wrong process for selecting a judicial position... But, I don't see an outcry for change .

Ah... I recently saw that Newell Normand gave Kovach his endorsment. It has been years since I lived in Jefferson Parish but when I did Harry Lee's word was law (despite being a minority Democrat, BTW) so perhaps this is also true with Lee's successor?

KjunLady, I live in Gentilly and know nothing about Kovach or Sasoone, however Kovach is a lawyer (THAT does not mean squat to me as far as being qualified for public office - judgeship being an exception) and so she is not completely without knowledge of the law. Then again, perhaps it was simply a PR victory, I don't know.

kpf says, "According to a James Gill article, Judge Sassone treated people with arrogant condescension"...LOL... James Gill is the reason some Jefferson Parish politicians can't stand the sound of an English accent. Gill is the Times Picayune's detective to dig out the worst..... Yes, kpf, I agree we can vote for any reason we want.... But, a Judge should be qualified with SOME KIND of legal experience.... and not left up to impressionable voters- soley influenced by TV ads.

Yeah, wutever, back to page one though, the economy...... Yup folks, change is in the air.... You ask about congressional attention Steve? Well, as the problems keep piling up, Louisiana will find itself farther and farther towards the back of the line.... It's been 3 years now Steve... What has been done, and what hasn't been done? Now consider cost and value, as well as time elapsed and the true amount of dedication and resourcefullness displayed..... Louisiana gets like a C - is about as near as I can see it...... Did you know that 2 years after the earthquake in 1906 San Francisco was booming again? And with marginal aid really ever being produced by state or federal governement agencies or departments... It is now only around 9 months shy of being 4 years after the fact.... I wouldn't suggest getting too too too overworked on this subject....

According to a James Gill article, Judge Sassone treated people with arrogant condescension. That may explain why. In any case, it is the people's perogative to oust anyone they wish, for whatever reason, is it not? http://blog.nola.com/jamesgill/2008/10/down_and_dirty_in_jeff_judges.html

Ben.... “litigators is a noun for: to carry on a legal contest by judicial process; lawsuit, so I don’t understand its usage here. Where in the USA could find nonpartisan lawyers deciding the fate of another lawyer?"... That's the tricky part... I don't have the answer-- I just know that we, the general public, should not be selecting our Supreme Court judges...The president appoints-- This is a better process,IMHO. (If I used the "litigators" term loosely-- I apologize.) Did you see that some woman named Kovach unseated Judge Sassone in Jefferson Parish?--- this is just crazy. I don't know either candidate well- but, WHAT are we doing??!!

As usual Stephen you were backing the wrong person, Mary Landreau over John Kennedy. If you think a democrat controlled congress and white house will be simplistic towards Republican governors, then the causeway bridge is for sell! Managed properly it will make you a fortune! You said; “If Obama runs a centrist-style government, Mary Landrieu will continue to be able to be congruent with the Louisiana voters and possibly with Congress, ” well BO will not become a centrist its not in his nature. He’s a socialist leftwing liberal. You can’t trust Mary to bring the bacon home! KjunLady, you suggest a committee of nonpartisan lawyers and litigations “litigators is a noun for: to carry on a legal contest by judicial process; lawsuit, so I don’t understand its usage here. Where in the USA could find nonpartisan lawyers deciding the fate of another lawyer?

Goodbye to the Dumb Alaskan and Joe the Plumber. Who isn't name Joe and isn't a plumber. Can you believe that McCain invested the last few weeks of his campaign on this idiot? Well I guess you have to look closer to see which one is the bigger idiot. But it appears the republican’s days of fear monger campaigning are over. No more "Elect me because my opponent is the Boogey Man". Libby Dole went down in the same idiotic blaze of republican glory. But it's no secret, the polls show that republicans do better amongst uneducated and ignorant voters. Thus Louisiana fell right in line with those polling facts. While the polls showed Obama did far better amongst smarter, more intelligent voters of all races. And you wonder why republicans pander so strongly to the ignorant......it's because there's no shortage of them in America. George Bush said if McCain wins he would be vindicated. Hmmmmmmmmmmm. If America can ever get past race it will truly rise to the level of respected leader of the Free world again. But it has to clean up its own house first. Last night’s historic election of the first black president is a step in that direction. The people have spoken. God Bless America.

If Bobby Jindal were to pull a reverse Buddy Roemer I would laugh heartily. Actually, Buddy Roemer as the earnest reformer and conservative Democrat used to be one of my politicians. It was the state's loss that people could not warm up to him.

You did GOOD, Steve.... You were right when you predicted the race tightening in the end... Mary made her acceptance speech at only 3% victory... That WAS a squeaker....................But, why, oh why do we the people elect Supreme Court Judges? Guidry on the Supreme Court?.. That should be a committee of non-partisan lawyers and litigators... NOT everyday citizens responding to the best (and most) TV ads.......and the ousting of Judge Sassonne in N.O. by some woman who has no legal experience--not even a lawyer..... This is just WRONG,(the most clever ad-agent wins).............Btw, I loved, loved the "Not good, Guidry...not Good at all, Guidry" commercials the best(funny stuff)... need to keep that li'l sheister-guy (the actor) around for the next elections.

Spent about half my life in New Orleans/Louisiana and trying to figure out why the State is still part of the old South/Dixie mind-set? Because of the oil connections? because of racial biases? because Louisiana still thinks that Republican strategies will rain down riches on the poor and used-to-be-middle class? It is almost as puzzling as Florida (where I now live), which voted for Bushes three times and then made a switch to Obama. At least we made a change. I still don't think of Louisiana as a red-neck state but maybe my New Orleans heritage has me blinded. Although a lot of poor people of color drowned in Katrina, New Orleans treasures the people who cooked, governed, made music, made the Jazz Festival and mourned their losses. I hope New Orleans at least supported our new historic move to open the doors to a President who looks like, if not thinks like, their past mayors.

Mary's family is in New Orleans. Kennedy is from "the other part" of the state. BIG SURPRISE NEW ORLEANS SUPPORTED HER. THANK GOD. Liberal or not, she will work hard to get the coast restored because she has a lot to lose personally.

Amen to that KPF…… I believe folks are about to get a real upfront – up close hard core lesson in Economics 101….. Good thing down here for the most part we as a whole have a general affinity for red beans and rice…… Sausage to go with them are probably going to become quite the rare treat for many. And as far as Bobby and Mary go, well, they will in time, all in due time......

While I do hope all of our politicians are enlightened individuals who place the good of the citizenry first, I also believe that each of us must do as much as possible for ourselves and not rely upon a savior - in heaven or public office - to provide for us. This state - or any other - will never get ahead holding out our hand to D.C. We need to have a vibrant economy and also have people in office who will not waste and steal public funds. Oh dear, we are in trouble, aren't we?

I would like both Bobby and Mary to succeed in their endeavors, not for their onwn career's sake but for the sake of Louisiana.

And therein lays the crux of your delusion - - -- - - “I believe Louisiana will receive much more attention from the Democrat-controlled Congress and from Obama than it did so from the Bush administration and the Republican controlled Congress which lost power two years ago.” Steve-O!!!! You have shown yourself to be a classical oxyMORON as a result of your simplistic musing………………… Additional attention? Depends on what your definition of additional is and what its value or worth can be equated as…… Mary Landrieu? During this race it was simply one democrat running against another democrat under the approval of current democrats AND republicans alike…….. So, conservative? I think we have conservatived ourselves into a conservative hole in the ground…. Because in this Louisiana instance, conservative is only recognizable while looking at the first three letters in the word, after that it has no meaning…. Jefferson is lucid testimony to that…… Now, when it comes to joint Congressional/Presidential action in the future, consider another democrat motto that sat on the desk of a President not so long ago…. I believe it said something along the lines of ‘the buck stops here’, and from all I can see, it appears the vested interests are in states such as Florida, lots of coastal activity concerns there…. North Carolina, lots of coastal activity concerns there…. Iowa, lots of flood activity concerns up there…. California, HUGE flooding contemplations there in the San Joaquin County region (pretty much one of the largest agricultural regions on the face of the earth) And of course there is Delaware and Virginia…. (You know, Chesapeake bay territory, fisheries, oysters, crabs, etc., etc., etc.??) and let’s not forget the thousands upon thousands of poor, disenchanted, disenfranchised inhabitants of the District of Columbia…… And you have his concerns for Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, etc…. etc…. etc….. NOW LET ME SEE,,, HMMM, LOUISIANA ONLY OFFERED UP JUST A LITTLE MORE THAN ¾ OF A MILLION VOTES FOR OBAMA,,,, AND????? Tell me Steve, which race horse would you bet on as it runs to the feed trough…. Looks to me like Louisiana, after 3 years, might just be considered as a tired old nag……… and as long as the food stamps hold out, and habitat for humanity is building little Katrina cottages or whatever you want to call them, there isn’t too much to be worried about… Heck, even the Katrina transplants that moved to Georgia didn’t give him much of a boost….. And as far as Nagin voting for him…..? What’s it’s real value in comparison to other regions? In other words, Obama owes, and he knows he owes, and so that is where the majority of the funds, contemplations, considerations, and care goes……… Or didn’t you learn anything from Jefferson’s grateful speech last night for all the support he and his family garnered???

Landrieu and Obama need to get working on removing the duplication of benefits rule for Road Home grants, and forcing the SBA to align the cost to rebuild with that from the Road Home. Obama may be able to do this with a simple executive order on Jan 21.
