Today, the Louisiana GOP launched an attack against democrat Rep. Charlie Melancon of the 3rd Congressional District regarding the stimulus package.Below is the GOP press release attack and a response from Rep. Melancon’s press secretary, Robin Winchell. Melancon has been named as a possible candidate for US Senate currently occupied by David Vitter.
Louisiana GOP Slams Rep. Charlie Melancon For Failing To Discuss Stimulus Package With Constituents
Baton Rouge – Today, the House of Representatives debates passage of a trillion dollar stimulus package that is laden with pork as opposed to real relief to the struggling middle class. To make matters worse, Democrat Charlie Melancon has decided to jet-set off to Belgium and Paris instead of explaining why he supports this reckless proposal.
As they wine and dine at an alpine ski resort during their trip, Louisiana’s middle class continues to struggle in an uncertain economy. With Louisiana’s unemployment teetering at almost 6%, a real economic recovery package is necessary, yet Rep. Melancon initially voted for the “stimulus” package that was filled with hundreds of millions of dollars that would do very little to help the ailing economy and a nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office analysis indicates that it will take years before much of the spending program will have any effect.
Included in the package is $335M set aside for research in sexually-transmitted diseases and $30M to protect the salt marsh harvest mouse that happens to inhabit an area within Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco district.
“As Congressman Melancon prepares to vote for a pork-laden spending bill that will just increase the deficit and do little to help middle-class Louisiana families, he was quick to run to Europe instead of facing his constituents to explain his vote,” said Louisiana Republican Party Chairman Roger F. Villere, Jr. “When he is back from their taxpayer-funded junket, he should explain why struggling middle-class families should be forced to foot the bill for this wasteful Washington spending.”
From Rep. Melancon's Office to Bayoubuzz upon request for a response to the attack:
Rep. Melancon does not comment on partisan attacks from the Louisiana Republican Party. However, I would be happy to explain the congressional delegation trip he will be participating in next week.
Rep. Melancon will be part of a bipartisan Congressional delegation to meetings of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Feb. 14-22. The delegation is led by U.S. Rep. John Tanner, who chairs the U.S. delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and also serves as President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. Attached is a report from one of the delegation’s previous trips to the annual meetings.
Topics of discussion will include: ongoing efforts in Afghanistan, where NATO is commanding day-to-day operations; issues of global and economic security; diplomatic relations with NATO allies; and NATO relations with Russia.
Rep. Melancon believes it is important now, more than ever, that we strengthen our relationship with our NATO-ally nations. Many of those relationships have been strained in recent years, and it is crucial that we work to rebuild these ties, especially while our NATO allies are so important to winning the ongoing war in Afghanistan against radical fundamentalism. We need their support and access to their intelligence network so we can stop attacks from those who want to harm the United States.
Among other scheduled events, the group will:
·Participate in meetings of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, presided over by Congressman Tanner.
·Meet with NATO defense and military officials, NATO Secretary General Jaap de hoop Scheffer and General John Craddock, Supreme Allied Commander Europe.
·Tour the NATOSpecialOperationsForcesCoordinationCenter.
·Discuss the global economic crisis with members of the NATO Economic and Security Committee.
·Participate in meetings of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris and discussions with OECD Secretary General Angel Gurria.
·Participate in meetings of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in Vienna, including a speech by Congressman Tanner and a briefing from OSCE Secretary General Marc Perrin de Brichambaut.
·Tour the NATOSchool, NATO's key training facility on the operational level, in Oberammergau, Germany.
·Visit the GeorgeC. MarshallCenter in Garmisch, Germany, a renowned international security and defense studies institute that promotes dialogue and understanding among the nations of North America, Europe, Eurasia and beyond.

Attack? Ok, so now when you disagree with the Democrats it is called an attack?
Melancon represents my district too Sharon. I know several people that contacted him to urge him to vote against this bill. He is not listening. Just like he didn't listen about the e-verify or the amnesty bill. I am not Republican but Melancon has to go. If you agree email me at nlebou@yahoo.com Written by Nana

And of course, today being Friday the 13th, and yet one more stimulus 'package' being rushed through the hallowed halls of Congress perhaps you should consider; "The Congress shall have Power to dispose of and make all needed Rules and Regulations respecting the Territory or other Property belonging to the United States; and nothing in this Constitution shall be construed as to Prejudice any Claims of the United States, or of any particular State." - - - (Article Four Section Three, Paragraph Two of the U.S. Constitution)- - - - You may read into this anything you want...... But yes folks, those scales are a swinging away in the wind.....................

Yesterday was Abraham Lincoln's birthday...... He once quoted; "All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined could not, by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge in a trial of a thousand years. At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we ourselves must be its author and finisher." Written by

DQ do you really think that Melancon would risk his cushy job to actually run a contested race? I am with you, Sid. I am just amazed that not one Republican ran against him. I am from that district and I can tell you that it is an embarrassment. Written by Sharon

Yeah and what did the democrats learn from losing the white house to Bush and congress to the republicans years ago? They learned that they needed to drastically ramp up their pandering and their taxpayer-funded vote-buying. And it worked. Which all means a sad future for the USA and all of its citizens, including the victorious, ignorant, handout grabbing democrats. Written by

No Quiddy, you're the one who's not learning. But a person can't learn when they believe they already know it all. Melancon is nothing but a cane field crony, who thrived in the good ol' boy politics of Louisiana. From his little palace on Bayou Lafourche, he greased all the right palms and preached the populist mantra that our ignorant population still craves. Even though it's made us the a$$ end of everything. Charlie Melancon's knowledge of NATO is about as important as Bill Jefferson's knowledge of African industry. Written by

The GOP is afraid of Melancon running for the Senate seat next year because he can win. Their distortions of the stimulus bill and Melancon's trip are the same old GOP tactics of the last 20 years. They haven't learned anything from losing Congress and the White House. Written by David Quidd

Melancon and Landrieu will vote for this bill, followed by release of pre-scripted excuses when the failures, corruption and fraud start to surface. They'll express their "sincere" regret that they did not have the time to study it, but still stick to the BS about the need for urgent action instead of careful deliberation. Written by

How many more "conservative" democrats have innocently scheduled junkets to be missing in action during the critical moments of this ridiculous "stimulus" bill? How long will Americans continue to be duped by sleazy politicians like Charlie Boy? Written by

Yeah, after reading that agenda, I'm sure the Europeans can sleep better at night knowing lil Charlie Boy is watching out for them. I'm sure NATO has been struggling to find a good ol sugar cane lobbyist to help them chart their course. Written by

Just as the Honorable Charlie Boy, I am outraged at this partisan attack by the opposing political party. The noble and honest democratic party would never do such a thing. I mean after all, they even have cartels (slur intended) of hard-working selfless preachers speaking on behalf of their candidates. Written by

I hear what you're saying Tony G but if we desire the will of the majority of the people, then why not let the people vote on critical issues such as this? Then there will be no doubt of the "will of the people." Written by kpf

Think about it, what is a Congressman supposed to do? Represent the will of his constintuency or his Party. I do not believe it's the latter. Whether he thinks it's a good Plan or not is irrevelant. His first responsibility is to serve the voters in his District. If this is their desire he is their voice. Written by Tony G

Not having an alternate solution does not mean that one cannot oppose a plan. The Democratic Party - as an example - does not have to have an "alternative solution" as to how to "win" against terrorists to oppose the Iraq invasion and occupation. It is perfectly legitimate to say a plan is the wrong thing to do EVEN IF one doesn't have a proposed solution. I would think that would be obvious..... to most people anyway. Another (simpler) example, say you discover a strange looking "spot" on your arm. Your welder buddy says "I can melt that off with my cutting torch." Now - even if you do not know how to remove this thing - you are still justified in believing that his proposed plan is not the correct course of action. Also consider, the spot may be harmless, and so the correct thing to do is ... nothing. Written by kpf
