As Mary Landrieu and John Kennedy debate tonight for the US Senate seat, some are wondering if the challenger will ever hit his stride.
While the polls have placed Landrieu in a strong double digit lead in the past month, if Kennedy is ever going to overtake Landrieu, the debate better be the catalyst for that change.
Kennedy is certainly familiar with come-from-behind victories. He was general counsel for Buddy Roemer who blew past well-known opposition in the final weeks on a wave of reform.Roemer had one thing going for him at the time, the city newspapers all started to galvanize behind him and he peaked at the right time.
So, it is with some confusion that Kennedy or his allies would take on the Times Picayune at a point in time that he needs to get the dailies to show their support.
On Friday, the Chairman of the Louisiana Republican Party, Roger Villere, basically cast the Picayune as biased against Kennedy.Perhaps the editorial staff of the Picayune is in fact supportive of Landrieu but when you are substantially behind your opponent, have less than one-half the money of the incumbent, have high officials from the Republican party in both St. Tammany and Jefferson Parish supporting Landrieu, do you go after a major daily?
Villere’s statement said, “Just when you think you’ve seen it all, liberal Mary Landrieu and The New Orleans Times-Picayune this week hit a new low. With our economy on the brink and families facing tough times, Mary Landrieu and the New Orleans Times-Picayune want you to believe John Kennedy was opposed to disaster aid for Louisiana farmers. Kennedy has never changed his position on disaster aid for farmers. He has and will always fight for our farmers – but using farmers as election-year pawns like Mary Landrieu is just wrong.
Louisianans are fed up with politics as usual. We need reform. John Kennedy is a conservative who will fight for change in Washington. For the last decade Kennedy has been at the center of every major debate facing Louisianans and always standing up for taxpayers, while Mary Landrieu has been sitting on the sidelines, voting with the special interests and blaming others for telling the truth about her record.
The status quo in Washington isn’t work for us. But Mary Landrieu and the New Orleans Times-Picayune will do everything they can to keep things just as they are.”
Even assuming Villere is right, the attack is not smart politics. You can also bet that the Villere statement was not written without the knowledge of the Kennedy campaign.
Not that the Times Picayune has not strongly opposed a candidate before and failed to persuade the public. It strongly vilified David Duke in his runs for numerous positions but Duke was able to prevail in the first election against John Treen. In fact, Duke also came from no-where in the last weeks of the primary when he won the election for State Representative of District 81, a race that Villere happened to be a first primary candidate.
Miracles can happen in politics and Kennedy is no stranger to Louisiana politics. But, if he and the Louisiana GOP are going to run against the dailies, they better have a candidate with a compelling message.Saying a publication is biased doesn’t make it so.Kennedy needs all the support he can muster right now and making enemies with those who can be supportive is a sure-fire way to lose an election that is uphill for starts.
"When Obama becomes president" - you seem so sure. Media bias and flawed polls will not get him elected. What the media seem to not understand is their obvious bias may have the opposite effect of their intentions. Despite his record (too "tax and spend liberal" for my taste) and the stances he takes on issues on his web site I do think Obama will make a good president. Not anywhere near the GREAT president Ron Paul would have made, but perhaps a majority of Americans really do want a "Nanny State" - that being the case, Obama will do just fine. Written by kpf

"NEVER have I seen the press, MSM,etc. so 'in the tank' for 1 candidate as they are for Obama"... This is true, Joe.. (and- I too voted for Jimmy Carter- even when the Democrats didn't!...<g>)....... Before the Iowa Caucus, I liked Joe Biden; he dropped out... then, John Edwards was my hero (Gawd- Was I wrong!)... and finally, I supported Hillary Clinton.... "Until" I realized there was no fighting this "force" called Obama... so, I joined it. (Afterall, I'm a Democrat- universal healthcare, no war...) I'm definitely voting on the issues this year, and what's good for "me,".. but, along the way I "fell in love" with Obama...(oh, let your minds run rampid)... But- he is one of a kind... I don't see color-- I see leadership...and gift of diplomacy.......... Now- back to the Media-- It used to get me so mad when the media was beating up on Hillary... and they were definitely pro-Obama, before I was on board..... So I agree, the general media (except the extreme counterpart, FOX) leans toward Obama... I'd hate to have Keith Olbermann on my bad side. (Btw... when Obama becomes President, I hope he denounces that scandalous, hate-filled website DailyKos.) Written by KjunLady

Kennedy is a former liberal democrat and now has magically changed into a sincere conservative. I wouldn't blame the Times-Picayune for being biased toward Landrieu even though they aren't. It seems to me that only the elite Republican leaders will cast a vote for Kennedy. Written by gotigers

Good politics aside--somebody needs to call them out on this !
I've followed elections since my first vote for Jimmy Carter.
NEVER have I seen the press, MSM,etc. so "in the tank" for 1 candidate as they are for Obama. I'll never trust them again... Written by Joe

“””””””"making enemies with those who can be supportive is a sure-fire way to lose an election that is uphill for starts."””””””””” Well Steveo, interesting little ‘catch all cut and paste’ analogy there, and I would suppose that is politics. …….. Can't please them all all the time I would think........ And conversely, a person cannot miss what that person never had……….. I would think that if those "supporters" that are so 'desirable' or 'needed' are so wrapped up in extravagance, lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride, that they are actually a detriment to folks, perhaps those aren't the type of supporters a person would want, let alone ‘need’ in the first place.... There are only 5 ways to deal with a problem, you can work with it, you can work around it, you can work through it, you can work over it, or you can simply forget it and let others suffer their own causes…. It is up to the individual to decide what it is willing to do………. Hopefully with the passage of time, and those few folks fading from positions of negative influence that hampers progress for the common good of the whole, a person with vision and drive can emerge effecting implementations for the betterment of the many………. But then again, that would mean putting the sloth to the side….. Written by
