Chairman Villere's Conference Call Regarding Mary Landrieu's Vote For Government-Run Health Care

November 23rd, 2009

Selected Excerpts

Republican Party of Louisiana Chairman Roger F. Villere, Jr.:  “First and foremost, the bill the Senate passed on Saturday moves our country ever closer to government-run health care.  The Democrat leadership avoided any attempt at bipartisanship by negotiating everything behind closed doors without any input from the Republican leaders at all.  They tried to pass a plan to increase our health care premiums, increases taxes on small business ... and increase taxes on the middle class.  They’re going to cut our Medicare ... and put bureaucrats between the patients and their doctors…

The 2,074 page experiment is going to cost over $1 trillion dollars.  It passes billions and billions of dollars of unfunded mandates on to the states and for the first time allows the federal government to fund abortions and that's unacceptable...

Now I'd like to take a moment to specifically talk about Mary Landrieu's vote.  As I said this past Saturday, Mary Landrieu had an opportunity to kill this legislation, but instead she showed her true allegiance lies not with the citizens of Louisiana, but with the liberals in Washington, D.C.

Make no mistake; this was no ordinary procedural vote.  This was a vote that mattered…

[O]ne of the things I feel fairly certain about is that if Mary Landrieu ultimately votes against the bill on final passage after voting to advance the bill on Saturday, she’s going to face some of the same criticism that John Kerry did after he uttered his now-famous line that he actually voted for the bill before he voted against it.  Anyway, at the end of the day the voters are going to remember this and they’re going to remember that what matters most: Mary Landrieu sided with the liberals in Washington and not the citizens in Louisiana.”

(Excerpts From Louisiana Republican Party)
